BERNINI’S BUST OF THE SAVIOR AND THE PROBLEM OF THE HOMELESS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ROME Italian Quarterly, XXXVII, 2000, 209-51 BERNINI'S BUST OF THE SAVIOR AND THE PROBLEM OF THE HOMELESS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTIJRY ROME* In preparing for death Bernini followed a long and glorious tradition in which artists since the Renaissance strove to outdo themselves (and their predecessors) by creating tours de force of their craft as ultimate testaments to their ability and devotion. 1 While he followed his tradition, Bernini reinterpreted it in a flllldamental way, as ifin fulfillment of his famous dictum that in his art he had succeeded in breaking the rules, without ever violating them.2 For although he amassed great wealth and international prestige during a long and almost uniformly successful career, unlike many artists of his means and stature - and notably his great prototype Michelangelo -- ho planned no tomb or other monument for himself. 3 It emerges now more clearly than ever that if Bernini's expiatory creations were selfjusti:ficatory in origin, they were not self-centered in destination; they were directed not inward but outward, in a spirit of what today might be called "social consciousness." • • • Homo sapiens has been defined as the only animal that knows it is going to die. This paradox of a living creature's self-conscious awareness of and preoccupation with its own death was a prominent theme in European cullure from antiquity on. The process of intellectualization of this fatal aspect of human nature culminated toward the end of the middle ages in a coherent and logically conceived system, a veritable theory of dying. -

(064/36) Sant'Andrea delle Fratte Sant'Andrea delle Fratte is a minor basilica, as well as an early 17th century parish, titular and convent church in the rione Colonna, just to the south of the Piazza di Spagna, dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle. History The first church here was built in the 1192, called infra hortes (later translated into "delle Fratte" or "shrubs") for it was located in a countryside area. The first time that the name Fratte is used is in the 15th century. It means literally "woods" or "overgrown vegetation", and seems to commemorate an overgrown area which might have been an abandoned piece of land, some shrubby garden or the facing slope of the Pincian hill when it was still wild. (1) (11) The church was probably rebuilt (or newly built on this site) in the 15th century, when there is a hint in the records that an Augustinian nunnery was established here. Then it was for some time the national church of Scotland as an independent kingdom (St Andrew is Scotland's patron). After the Scottish Reformation in 1560 the Scots completely lost interest in it, and for a while it was taken over by a pious confraternity dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament. However it was given to the Order of Minim of St. Francis of Paola Friars in 1585, and they still serve the parish which was simultaneously created. (1) (11) In 1604 the construction of the new church was begun, under the design of Gaspare Guerra. The project halted in 1612 due to lack of funds. -

Tribes, clans, countries and other groups that have wealth have the power to wage and win wars. Those without wealth will always be war’s victims. They lack the resources to build effective defences and protect themselves against destructive powers. Besides extermination or assimilation, one consequence of wars for the vanquished is displacement. Defeated peoples are often set adrift. Cultures, or societies, come into existence when a sufficient number of individuals agree on a way of living together, either through consensus or through force. Cultures are sensitive organisms. They are born, sometimes growing and flourishing, oftentimes contracting and vanishing. Even the most powerful civilizations in their times have had to relinquish their positions of dominance, most often because of self destructive actions taken by their leaders. When one culture is diminished, there is always another waiting to take its place. Humankind is the sum total of all those cultures that have gone before. Religion is the codification of a society’s rules that define what is considered right and what is deemed wrong. Societies base their laws on these definitions, and the laws establish the worldly consequences of not upholding or abiding by the rules. Those who are the codifiers, the priests, gain their legitimacy by providing answers to the unanswerable. -
