eraldo Vélez has many Greasons to celebrate his birthday this year — a hundred of them, in fact.

On Wed., 24th, the longtime Inwood resident marked his 100th birthday. His outlook on life is the same now as it has been for the past century. “I just love life itself,” said Vélez. “All I ever wanted was to live peacefully and happily.” Vélez credits his longevity to working hard during his life, and to the support of his relatives, many of whom also live in Inwood. “Having my family around me has made me strong,” he stated. “He’s the one who keeps the whole family together,” said Vélez’s grandaughter, Elizabeth. “He’s the big boss.” Vélez stays fit by walking around the neighborhood each morning. “He’s cut back recently due to his age, but Vélez is a native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico apartment are lined with photographs of his he used to go out walking five times a day,” and moved to New York City in 1972. extensive family — Vélez has 11 children, 36 explained Elizabeth.
