This is the third year that: we have not gone directly to the field (with a few exceptions) for the information required to update this directory. In order to be consistent with other units of the Education Department, those institutions which are primarily oriented toward professional training are separated for the summary table of "Libraries by Highest Earned-Degree Granted" in appendix II. This year we have added directory information and, where avail- able, statistics for libraries of proprietary institutions which offer one or more degrees accredited by the Regents. We have attempted to include all personnel name changes which have come to our attention. The format of this edition continues that which was begun with the sixth edition. Cross-references and notes of institutional name change are compressed. Cross-references referring to contract colleges are omitted; they are found under New York State..." rather than "SUNY."This edition also continues the practice of distinguishing between teletype services by following those numbers which are on the Western Union TUX network by a dagger (t) and those numbers which are on the telephone DDD network (frequently referred to as Dataphone) by an asterisk (*). A comparison of appendix II with the 1972 data indicates that 1973 was gener- ally a good reporting year for academic libraries. A comparison of the healthy jump in the expenditures for resources with the smaller growths of number of volumes, number of periodicals, and number of serials dramatically illustrates the effect of inflation on academic libraries. It is also interesting to note the decrease in total number of FTE professional staff and the corresponding jump in the number of FTE support staff. COMPARISONS, CHANGE FROM 1972 TO 1973 Operating Expenses + 5.72: Expenditures for Resources + 7.2% Holdings Total Volumes + 2.9% Current Periodicals Received + 2.8% Current Serials Received + 0.8% FTE Professional Staff - 1.2% FTE Support Staff +10.1 For each entry there is a regional indicator which refers to the Reference and Research Library Resources Council program region in which the institution is located. The identifiers are used whether or not a particular institution is a participant in the 3R's program. The following symbols are used: CD Capital District Library Council for Reference and Research Resources CNY Central New York Library Resources Council LI Long Island Library Resources Council, Inc. METRO New York Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency, Inc. NC North Country Reference and Research Resources Council RR Rochester Regional Research Library Council SCR South Central Research Library Council SENY Southeastern New York Library Resources Council WNY Western New York Library Resources Council The editor will welcome suggestions, corrections, andcomments. 1975 R.
