Complete Configuration 4 IMPORTANT NOTE ON COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY’S NETWORK If you arrive with an infected laptop, or if it becomes infected after you’re here, you may lose access to the Internet until you remove the infection. Removing viruses can take hours, viruses can endanger your personal documents, and may require you to re-format your hard drive and re-install your operating system and all your applications. Although the Law School IT department is here to help you should it be necessary, it is up to YOU to take the necessary precautions to secure your laptop. The checklist detailing the necessary steps for configuring your laptop is on the previous page and the instructions for implementing these items are on the pages that follow. It is imperative that these steps be completed to ensure that your computer is protected and ready for use at the Law School. In addition, please note that you may also be blocked by CUIT (Columbia University Information Technology), the University IT department at-large, should you connect to the University’s networks with an infected machine (University networks include University wireless access points in the main campus, and wired connections in Butler Library and other University buildings). If you are blocked by the University, you will see a message appear when you try to open your web browser indicating that your connection has been blocked – the University usually identifies the cause of the block in the message – eg. viral infections or illegal downloading). You can contact CUIT at 212-854-1919 or visit their offices at 102 Philosophy Hall. You can also contact the Law School Helpdesk at 212-854-1370 or visit us at 731 Jerome Greene Hall. NOTE ON SUPPORT The Helpdesk at the Law School (CLS IT) supports connectivity to the CLS and CUIT networks, only. The Law School is directly responsible for the wireless access points in our buildings (Jerome Greene Hall/William and June Warren Hall), as well as, our wired connections throughout. Connections made from Lenfest Hall and other University Housing is supported only by CUIT and questions about your connections in any non-Law School building must be directed to CUIT. The Helpdesk does not provide support for applications, operating systems, hardware – our support generally extends only to internet connections at the Law School or assistance in removing viruses and spyware. If your laptop experiences applications, OS or hardware problems, please contact the vendor or manufacturer of your laptop (generally, the party responsible for your computer’s warranty). Please be advised that the Helpdesk does not perform hardware/software installations, of any kind (expect for the University’s anti-virus and spyware software). Students must perform hardware/software installations themselves, as per the manufacturer’s instructions. If you experience problems during installation, contact your vendor or manufacturer for suppo 5 Introduction This manual will guide you through: 1.
