    Qualitative Sociology Review Volume IV, Issue 2 – August 2008 Jaroslava Gajdosova New School for Social Research, USA Literary Field and the Question of Method – Revisited Abstract Field theory is one of the most efficient and influential analytical schemes in the critical sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, which he consistently developed in his model of literary field. The analytical reliability of the model derives from the way in which Bourdieu combines the structural category of “field” with the phenomenological categories of “doxa” and “habitus”. This article argues that Bourdieu’s selective application of the two phenomenological categories produces a static structural model of literary field where all processes are explained in causal and deterministic terms. The article further seeks to present an alternative reading of the same categories within a discursive model where the processes in literary field and the motivations of its agents are driven by field’s discourses rather than by its rigid structures. Keywords Field theory; Literary sociology; Literary history; Husserlian phenomenology; Collective identity; Collective memory; Critical sociology This article will analyze key categories in the literary sociology of Pierre Bourdieu—literary field, literary doxa, and habitus—and will discuss how they enhance and confine sociological understandings of literary worlds. Bourdieu’s theoretical apparatus and his phenomenological insights about literary field have inspired new directions in the sociology of literature and have also influenced cross- disciplinary studies. Many of them use these categories either as explicit analytical concepts 1 or they combine them with the studies of the networks of production, reception, or distribution of the literary texts and the organization of these processes in literary field.

Laurien Department of Modern Foreign Languages/German University of Stellenbosch STELLENBOSCH E-mail: [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Germany: facing the Nazi past today This article gives an overview of the changing debate on National Socialism and the question of guilt in German society. Memory had a different meaning in different generations, shaping distinct phases of dealing with the past, from silence and avoidance to sceptical debate, from painful “Vergangen- heitsbewältigung” to a general memory of suffering. In present-day Germany, memory as collective personal memo- ry has faded away. At the same time, literature has lost its role as a main medium to mass media like cinema and television. Furthermore, memory has become fragmented. Large groups of members of the German society, like immigrants, see the past from a different perspective altogether. Although the remem- brance of the time of National Socialism is still a distinctive part of Germany’s political culture, it has become more generalised, with “Holocaust memory” as a globalised symbol for a funda- mental “break” in Western culture. An Interview with Peter Handke Abstract Handke comments on the relationship of his early essays to his fiction, maintaining that there is no theory of literature but only practice. For him, fiction brings daily occurrences into a new order, with the point of intersection of these occurrences suggesting a story. Handke believes there will always be a need for narrative prose which goes beyond mere reportage, and, with respect to his journal, Das Gewicht der Welt, he sees no contradiction between «journal» and «fiction.» His distinction between ve eryday and poetic language is central to Handke's approach to fiction. Explaining that there is no language for nature, he speaks at length of his latest novel, Langsame Heimkehr, which he calls an epic poem. Handke also comments on writers who have influenced his thinking and work, including Barthes and Hölderlin; considers the relationship of the creative impulse to film-making, drama, and fiction; and speculates as ot why college students in America are attracted to his work.

Like many others, we, too, wanted to celebrate Paul Celan in this, the hundredth year of his birth. With artists and a wide audience, in a joyful and festive setting. And, like many others, we had to cancel the event planned for April due to COVID-19. Now, the new date has fallen right in the second wave of the pandemic. From today, cultural institutions throughout the country are once again having to find creative solutions to share their music, their performance, their art with the public. And that is getting increasingly difficult. I know that many institutions are not only under extreme pressure, but are fighting for survival. Especially now, when once again we cannot go to the theatre, to concerts or to exhibitions due to the pandemic, we need to think about how we can support artists in other ways. And so must policy-makers. That is one of the reasons why we decided not to postpone this event again, far less to cancel it. But there is another reason, too. In times like these, we need culture more than ever. To encourage us, to give us strength, to help us reach out to one another emotionally. We need culture as the lifeblood of society as we live through a crisis together. A crisis that is forcing us to be patient for a while, but that will one day be over.
