Chapter 2 Participles Chapter 2: Participles
In this chapter I consider the properties of -el and -bel participles, which under some previous analyses have been termed infinitives. I propose an alternative, which treats the -el participles as formally nominal forms, and attempt to show how this analysis is preferable to the infinitive analysis. Since a -Vl suffix is quite omni-present in Tzeltal grammar, it is important at the outset to circumscribe the phenomenon I wish to deal with here. The -Vl suffixes can be:
