PASTOR’S MESSAGE

“When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.”

Mark 6:33-34

Summer is the time to get away and find much needed rest. In today’s Gospel from Mark 6:30 -34, Jesus had just heard about the successes his apostles had when sent out two by two. Now it was time to rest from their labors, but not so fast! The crowds were desperate to have communion with Jesus, so they followed the apostles, and in his compassion, Christ began to teach those who were like sheep without a shepherd. In the first reading from Jeremiah 23:1- 6, the Lord chastises those who fail to care for their flock: “You have scattered my sheep and driven them away. You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds.” The Lord emphasizes that He will shepherd those in need of God’s healing presence.

Gregory J. Johanson edited a book entitled Feed My Sheep: Sermons on Contemporary Is- sues in Pastoral Care, Paulist Press. One pages 73 and 74, he shares how not only ordained clergy, but the laity are called to shepherd one another in a world marred by loneliness and fear. This unnamed pastor had been with a nurse who had only a few days to live after a failed operation to treat her cancer. She said to him, “Only one thing more – I want you to come and be with my sister when it happens, so she won’t be alone.” She died two nights later, and the pastor said, “I learned the lesson of the importance of pastoral prayer, for it was through pray- er, quiet prayers with eyes closed and her hand clasped tightly in mine, that we groped for the

3 strength she so desperately needed. She was aware of the reality of her loneliness. Yet she reached out in concern for her sister even as she was being ministered to.

Christian ministry today may well be characterized by the themes of loneliness, reaching out, and burden bearing. Ministers are challenged to enable others to be burden bearers for Christ’s sake. The church, as an intentional community has a role to play, a ministry to perform in a lonely world. By “ministry” I have in mind the ministry of the laity. The congregation as a whole and each member has a ministry. For a long time, churches have thought of the profes- sional clergy as being the ones responsible for the church’s ministry. But lately there has been increased recognition of the role of the laity, the members of the congregation, as having a ministry as well. Indeed, may each of us reach out to ease one another’s burdens by being present in times of need. Fr. Dennis

FEAST OF FAITH

The Prayer Over the Offerings In the liturgy of the 1570 Missal, this prayer was called the “secret” prayer. It was “secret” not be- cause its content was mysterious, but because it was prayed in silence by the priest, who only recit- ed the conclusion aloud: . . . per omnia saecula saeculorum. With the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, we again hear these rich prayers spoken aloud. They remind us to prepare ourselves for what is to happen in the Eucharistic Prayer, for it is not only the bread and wine that will be trans- formed.

The Prayer Over the Offerings is a prayer for transformation, an expression, in a few words, of all that we hope that the liturgy will accomplish in our lives. We ask God to accept the gifts we present, and to change us even as God hal- lows the bread and wine. As we listen carefully to the Prayer Over the Offer- ings, we are reminded of what it is that we seek in the Eucharist: to be made holy; to be drawn clos- er to God; to come to eternal joy, unity, peace, and salvation. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. Announcing…..A New Adult Summer Bible Study The Letter to the Galatians

Looking for something to do this summer? Please join us for the new Catholic Scripture study on the Letter to the Galatians in the New Testament, which will begin onsite on Thursday July 22nd from 7 – 8:30 PM and will meet every Thurs- day evening until August 1212h in the McDonald Family Center Gym.

This Letter was written by St. Paul to the Galatian faith community, which was struggling with whether Gentile Christians needed to be circumcised and follow the dietary and purity regula- tions of first century AD Judaism. St. Paul emphatically affirms that salvation is through belief in Jesus Christ, whose faith led Him to the Cross. The faith of Jesus Christ and faith in Him is sufficient for full membership in the Christian faith community. This Letter was also a key doctrinal text for Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Please join us for a lively and interactive reflection and discussion of this Letter to the early Church which was struggling with what it means to be a Christian, a struggle that continues to our time.

Gail Dereszewski will be the leader. There is NO COST for this Bible study. Just bring your Bible and your questions to the first session. For more information, please call Gail Dereszewski at the parish offices at 478-5004.
