WELCOME BACK!

With the Thanksgiving weekend behind us, the Island can breathe a sigh of relief, at least a short one, as our visitors and seasonal residents appear to be making their way to us once again. What was once part of a routine seasonal pattern, is, this year, a much anticipated migration, as we all have a new appreciation for the val- ue of those visitors and seasonal residents. In the cycle of our seasonal tourism business, the summer is usu- ally a welcome respite from crowds and traffic and restaurant wait times. This past summer was something else entirely. We don’t need to remind our residents of that, they know it all too well. We’d like to inform our visitors so that they know that this past summer & fall have not been any- where in the range of typical here on Fort Myers Beach. So, if you are greeted especially warmly or hugged extra tightly when you appear at your favorite spot on Island, that’s why. We are REALLY, REALLY glad to see you! Many of us truly worried about how visitors would react to our en- vironmental catastrophe of the summer. Would they return? Would the sound bite news of bad water in Florida scare them away? For those unaware, a Red Tide bloom, composed of the algae Your Hometown Newspaper for over 18 years Karenia brevis, has been active in the Gulf of Mexico for over a year, first identified in October 2017, shortly after Hurricane Irma’s pass through Florida dumping a record amount of rain on the state. WHAT IS COMMUNITY COMICS Each week I draw a cartoon and put it up on my FB page (Mark List) on Saturday morning, and ask all my FB friends to contribute captions for the cartoon. I also ask that everyone vote for the ones they think are the funniest. The ones with the most Likes by Monday or Tuesday get printed in the funnies pages that week. We do it simply for the fun of it.

The bloom is patchy, meaning levels of K.brevis are inconsistent along the coast. High levels (>1 million cells/liter) were found in and/or offshore of Man- atee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties. Medium levels (>100,000 to 1 million cells/liter) were found in the same areas plus Pinellas, Lee and Collier counties. Compared to last week, Red Tide decreased in some areas of Lee County, but increased in others. Northern Lee County testing sites in the past week showed Very Low (>1,000-10,000 cells/liter) and Medium results. Central and southern Lee sam- pling sites showed only Background levels of K.brevis. Fish kills and respiratory irritation were reported in Lee County during the past week as well as several other SWFL counties. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that a total of 39 bottlenose dolphins have been found dead in Lee and Collier counties since Wednesday, November 21. Scientists suspect that Red Tide is to blame, with dolphins eating fish that had been affected by Red Tide, concen- trating toxins in the larger animals further up the food chain. Each dolphin will be tested. NOAA has declared the higher than normal dolphin death rate as an Unusual Mortality Event. A total of 117 dead dolphins have been found along November 28, 2018 FWC Red Tide map. Courtesy of FWC. the Southwest Florida coast from Pinellas to Collier counties since July. In Northwest Florida, K. brevis was observed in or offshore of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Gulf, Franklin and Wakulla counties. Only one site in Santa Rosa County tested at High levels. The East Coast of Florida was clear of Red Tide, with only background levels seen in Brevard County. On November 27, 2018, large amounts of drift algae accumulated on parts of Fort Myers Beach.

Blue-Green Algae: According to the November 27, 2018 Caloosahatchee River and Estuary Report, Cyanobacteria blooms persist in Lake Okeechobee and at Lee County sample sites along the Caloosahatchee River and estuary. On November 26, 2018, the Lee County Environmental Lab found cyanobacteria blooms of Dolichospermum, Microcystis and Planktothrix at the Alva and Davis Boat Ramps. The weekly average flow of the Caloosahatchee at Franklin Lock was 1150 cubic feet per second for the week ending November 26. The level of Lake Okeechobee is 13.19 feet.

Summary: Cyanobacteria blooms persist in the Caloosahatchee River and estu- ary. Red Tide levels have decreased in some parts of Lee County and increased in others. Sites in northern Lee County showed Medium and Low levels, while central and southern Lee testing sites showed Background levels this past week. Drift algae washed ashore on Fort Myers Beach on Nov. 27.
