He is especially remembered for his important contribution to the classical guitar repertoire, becoming one of the leading composers of the 20th century for the instrument. He was also one of the leading composers of zarzuelas, a form of Spanish light opera. His 1932 zarzuela, Louise Fernanda, proved firmly popular. In addition, he composed ballets, symphonic works and piano pieces, as well as operas of the same name and one full-length opera El Poetessa, which premiered in 1980 with the famous tenor Placido Domingo. Moreno Torroba also ran his own company zarzuela, which toured extensively, especially in Latin America. Biography and career During his long career Moreno Torroba composed many works, both in traditional Spanish forms and for the concert hall. It is often associated with zarzuela, a traditional Spanish musical form. He achieved the greatest success in the 1930s with Louise Fernanda (1932) and La Chulavon (1934). By directing several opera companies, Moreno Torroba helped present the audience to the international audience. In 1946, he founded zarzuela with singers Placido Domingo Ferrer and Pepita Embil, Placido Domingo's parents and close friends. The company toured Latin America for two years, becoming particularly popular in Mexico. A composer who was identified from the beginning with a phalanx to be on the national side. decided to go to America in 1946 to avoid the economic and food shortages of postwar Spain. Moreno Torroba also composed operas, of which La Virgen de Mayo (1925) and El Poetess (1980) with Placido Domingo in the title role, are his most famous. In addition to his vocal works, he is well known for his classical guitar compositions, many of which were dedicated to either Maria Anglican Funes or Andres Segovia. Along with other leading Spanish composers such as Joaquin Rodrigo, Joaquin Turina, Isaac Albenis, Enrique Granados and others, Torroba dedicated himself to defining the spirit of Spanish culture through music. Indeed, he achieved this goal with The Castles of Spain, as each part of the collection serves as the quintessential skill of the composer in writing music for the concert scene, without losing the soul of folk music that inspires him. The collection starts with the moderately lively Turegano, and then moves into the leisurely Torija. Although the contrast between adjacent movements is not always stark, they alternate between moderately fast and slow. It is in the slower movements that Moreno Torrobe's virtuosity manifests itself in the formation of rhapsodic lyrical melodies. In faster movements, we hear rhythms that point to this music to be unmistakably Spanish. Alba de Tormes (Trova) Siguenza (La Infantina Duerme) Manzanares del Real (A la Moca Fermos) Montemayor: Romance de los Pinos (Contemplaion) Turegano (Serranilla) Alcashis (Festiva) Alcazar de Segovia (Llamada) Toria (Eledja) ) Calatrava (Festiva) Javier (Evocasion) Redaba Simankas (Jugalresca) zafra (Fantasma) Olit When Tavi Ginariu told us that he would like to record a few movements of the castles of Torroba Spain we took it as a challenge, to collect some amazing midcentury Spanish guitars to record. In the end we chose several guitars that were made in the early 20th century and even one, Moya, made in the late 19th century, but they all represent the Spanish tradition and are excellent examples of the work of these luthiers. Guitars include 1896 Hijos de Melhor de Moya, 1958 Ignacio Flata, 1925 Santos Hernandez, 1929 Francisco Simpleisio, and 1949 Jose Ramirez II. Tavi chose these five movements as representative of the Tordoba collection range, and Segovia usually played 8 (out of 14 total) of them in concert. Tavi will play 8 that Segovia played on his upcoming CD. Here are a few words from Tavi about the play: Federico Moreno Torroba loved his native Spain and elements of Spanish folklore permeate each of his compositions.
