Sam the Answer Man: #128 August 2017 “Coupler Basics” By the time this month’s article is published we’ve just returned from the NMRA National Train Show in Orlando, FL and I’ll give a brief report in next month’s issue. We are still receiving inquiries from model railroaders that are new in the hobby and others that are returning to the hobby after retirement. So thought I’d touch on some basics again that might seen redundant to experienced modelers. Couplers, first there is no single coupler that fits all models, especially in HO scale. For us to help when selecting Kadee couplers we need to know the manufacturer, type of model (diesel or steam locomotive, passenger car, freight car, or caboose). The maker is very important especially with older models because most had their own proprietary couplers and coupler mountings that usually were different than each others. This is why we developed so many variations of couplers. Newer HO models that come with some version of a knuckle coupler normally will easily accept our #148 whisker coupler. However, always check the coupler heights with a coupler height gauge, this applies to all scales. For top coupler performance it is important to have all your couplers at the same correct height. The old X2F or Horn Hook coupler was at one time the “unofficial” standard coupler. Some of these coupler are still in use and still found on older models filtering into the used market. Also, body mounted coupler are much better than truck mounted couplers. In “O” scale we only make scale size couplers (two rail) we do not make the over scale three rail couplers. Our O scale couplers, however, have been are being fitted to almost every three rail model made. Trucks, we do not make passenger car trucks we only make freight car and caboose trucks in HO scale and freight car trucks in G scale (1:29). Our HO trucks require a flat mounting surface and do not fit over a post, which is removed to fit our trucks to most makes of rolling stock. Older plastic trucks with truck mounted couplers use a large split pin in a large pivoting hole. to fit most after market trucks you’ll need to fill in the large hole and use a #2 screw to attach the new trucks. We do make trucks with couplers that have a larger hole and a step bushing that fits some of the larger pivoting holes. Our G scale trucks come with mounting adapters to fit most manufacturer’s mounting surfaces. Car weight, you’ll find on many older cars that many are very light and with truck mounted couplers these cars simply will not run well and derail easily. There is an NMRA standard formula for car weight. Start with 1 ounce then add 1/2 an ounce for every inch of car length, a 40’ car weighs just about 4 ounces. Adding metal wheels or Kadee trucks will add weight then adding other weight, keeping a low center of gravity, will bring the weight up to a standard. Modeling, is a terminology issue with me. A “modeler” is a person that actually builds models, kit bashes, and scratch builds models and isn’t concerned with having to modify, file and trim, drill and tap screw holes, and use “modeling skills” to achieve their end product. “Model railroaders” to me are those that do not or rarely use modeling skills and would rather buy RTR models and run trains. For those that are just beginning you will eventually have to find some level, or develop it, of modeling skills that you will use all through your model railroading life so don’t be afraid to do things or try new things. This hobby is meant to be fun and the priority is to learn to enjoy every aspect of it, so do whatever it takes to enjoy this hobby.
