ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. However, the most . effective justification for cooperation among groups in Maluku was adherence to common origin myths which established familial links with societies as far west as Butung and as far east as the Papuan islands. I The records of the Dutch East India Company housed in the State Archives in The Hague offer a useful glimpse of the operation of local trading networks in Maluku. Although concerned principally with their own economic activities in the area, the Dutch found it necessary to understand something of the nature of Indigenous exchange relationships. The information, however, never formed the basis for a report, but is scattered in various documents in the form of observations or personal experiences of Dutch officials. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area. INTRODUCTION Prince Nuku of Tidore Is Recognized As One Of
INTRODUCTION Prince Nuku of Tidore is recognized as one of the national heroes (pahlawan nasional) of Indonesia. He was the leader of a successful rebel- lion against the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC) and its indigenous allies which lasted for more than twenty years. Born as a Tidoran prince between 1725 and 1735, he passed away as the Sultan of Tidore in 1805.1 In 1780 he fled from Tidore seek- ing refuge in East Seram, Halmahera, and the Raja Ampat from where he launched the rebellion. In 1797 he returned to Tidore with his allied forces and conquered the Sultanates of both Bacan and Tidore. During his exile, Nuku had to fight the forces of the three VOC Governments in Maluku: Ternate, Ambon, and Banda.2 Besides possessing better weapon- ry and equipment, the VOC could also mobilize its indigenous subjects from places such as Ambon and Ternate as troops. In addition, the VOC often dispatched support forces such as ships, weaponry, and soldiers to Maluku from Batavia. In 1801, in close collaboration with the English, Nuku managed to defeat the VOC in Ternate and its indigenous ally, the Ternate Sultanate. Prince Nuku and his Tidoran adherents depended to a large extent on the support they received from various groups of Malukans and Papuans and the assistance of the English. It is intriguing to see what strategies he employed to maintain support among the Tidorans at home, his adher- ents in the periphery of Tidore, and even the English. Geographical and historical setting In the early sixteenth century, Maluku—known as the Spice Islands— became the target of European traders who were competing to obtain cloves and nutmegs. -

Mangrove Suitability for Ecotourism Location in Tuada Village, Jailolo, West Halmahera Hernita Pasongli, Vrita Tri Aryuni, and Nurain Sirajudin Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Khairun University, Ternate, Indonesia Keywords: Ecotourism, Land suitability, Mangrove. Abstract: Tuada Beach in West Halmahera is one of the local tourist destinations in North Maluku which still has mangrove in the side part. Instead of its beautiful view of the beach, the mangrove's itself have potential to be developed as ecotourism spot for those who are interesting in a special adventure. The objective of the research was to identify mangrove ecotourism potential and assessment its suitability as ecotourism in Tuada Beach, Jailolo, West Halmahera. The research method was by mapping, weighting and scoring variables, continued with overlay analysis. Variables of the assessment were mangrove density, thickness and variety, accessibility, slope, and freshwater supply. Slope data were generated from map contour, while freshwater supply, accessibility, and mangrove variables collected with field surveys. Results showed that mangrove thickness was suitable. It has a flat slope, which very suitable for ecotourism. Tidal range varies between 3-1.7 meters which suitable for ecotourism, while water supply located for 0.1 – 0.67 km from the area and it's considered suitable for ecotourism. This area has good accessibility. For the density of mangrove varies between rare until very dense, while its variety consists of 8 species. Tuada Beach has the potential to be developed for mangrove ecotourism, as its suitability varies from moderate suitable (S2) to highly suitable (S1). For its potential and suitability, the facilities need to improve as this beach recommended for ecotourism spot. -

INTRODUCTION For the past thirty years I have, from time to time, come across bird material and literature records which have added localities and in a few instances have ad• ded new species, to Van Bemmel's (1948) list of birds of the Moluccan Islands and its supplement, published five years later (Van Bemmel & Voous, 1953). I have kept notes of these additions with the vague idea of perhaps, some time in the future, publishing a revised edition of the list of the avifauna of the Moluc• cas, zoogeographically one of the most interesting regions of the world. The sum total of my notes to date would hardly have justified publication, were it not for the fact that a new list of Moluccan birds was in the course of preparation by the late C. M. N. White, and is to be posthumously completed and published (cf. Benson, 1979; Cranbrook, 1980). This made it desirable to have my notes published, so that they will be available for inclusion in the new list. Ornithological activity in the Moluccas since the publication of Van BemmePs list has been limited. Many of De Haan's results were already incorporated in the paper by Van Bemmel & Voous (1953); subsequently two new subspecies from his collections were described by Jany (1955). -

Even though the Central KPU has issued a policy in the form of PKPU Number 8 of 207, which aims to increase the level of public participation. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research by focusing on the study of the implementation of PKPU Number 8 of 2017 on Community Participation in the Election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Ternate in 2015. The data collected were in the form of words and pictures. In addition, everything that is gathered is likely to be the key to what has been researched. The results of the research conducted indicate that namely; First, the implementation of the General Election Commission Regulation (PKPU) Number 8 of 2017 has been carried out well by the KPU of Ternate City in the process of selecting the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Ternate, but there are still problems faced including the level of community participation in Ternate City which only reaches 56.57%, whereas the national target must reach 80%. -

Today this social movement is still alive and kicking. In 2010, the Aru Islands community was taken by surprise by the plan of a private corporation (PT Menara Group or PT MG) to annex forest areas in the Aru Islands in order to convert them into sugar-cane plantations. Their outrage at this plan spurred the citizens of Aru to fight the might of this corporate and preserve their forests and environment. Not all has gone smoothly as the civil society movement in Aru has been divided into pro-splitting and counter-splitting on a regional division agenda. Meanwhile, this exploitative business has become a scourge for the Aru people who want to preserve their forests and the environment as a whole. Thanks to the campaign, environmental awareness appears to be growing rather than abating among the Aru Islands community. Young people in the Aru have been sharing their stories about the natural resources around them under threat from the power of private corporate capital with friends, family, and neighbours. The danger of deforestation by private corporations is a problem and a challenge that must be faced by all communities, whether they be Aru, Indonesian, or international, who care about the preservation of the forests in the Aru Islands as a “lung” of the world, helping to reduce the effects of global warming and the ozone depletion. -

The capability of each region to promote its own growth depends on its economic competitive advantages. This study is aimed to determine the centers of economic growth and regional development in West Halmahera Regency in the North Moluccas Province. The data used for analysis is secondary data which were collected using documentation method and internet browsing. The method of analysis used is scalogram analysis. The results show that among 9 subdistricts observed in this study, only 4 have the highest scores for socioeconomic infrastructures completeness. The subdistrict located in the central administrative area is the center of growth or growth pole, and the other 3 subdistricts act as the buffer areas. Based on scalogram analysis results, it is found that the growth of each subdistrict is relatively similar, with only 1 subdistrict that shows a relatively more advance growth in Hierarchy II with the highest Index of Subdistrict Growth (ISG) at 21.3433. The other 8 subdistricts are under-developed regions within Hierarchy III with the variable Index of Subdistrict Growth (ISG).
