WELCOMING WORDS On behalf of the Association for Cultural Studies, I am delighted to welcome you to Tampere and to the 2014 "Crossroads in Cultural Studies" conference. This is the tenth Crossroads conference to date, and we have returned to the site where four of the first five such gatherings were held. One of the main hallmarks of the Crossroads conference has always been its ability to showcase the rich variety of ways that cultural studies is practiced in different national and regional contexts. As such, I encourage of you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to expand your sense of what cultural studies is – and can be. Let me also extend my heartfelt thanks to Conference Director Mikko Lehtonen and his team of conference organizers and program planners. A conference of this size and scope requires a tremendous amount of labor over several years, and I deeply appreciate all the time and energy that our hosts have devoted to making this a successful and enjoyable event for all of us. The next four days promise to be an intellectually rewarding gathering of cultural studies practitioners from across the globe that will enrich us all. Welcome – and enjoy! Gilbert B.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE This is the accepted manuscript of the article, which has been published in Continuityprovided by Trepo - Institutional Repository of Tampere University and Change, 2019, 34(1), 63-89. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0268416019000080 Jarmo Peltola The British contribution to the birth of the Finnish Cotton Industry, 1820–1870 Introduction In the early years of the nineteenth century cotton was the most important product in the world. The growth of the cotton industry would fuel the development of capitalism across Europe and, indeed, the rest of the world as the century advanced. 1 Kristine Bruland2 has argued, with particular reference to Norway between 1840 and 1870, that the spread of the industry across Europe was greatly influenced by the technological advances and organizational practices developed, and exported, from Great Britain. As well as Norway, Belgium, Germany, the Russia Empire, and Sweden all benefitted from British expertise. The cotton industry in Finland developed rather later than in many other European countries, not helped by the country’s location on the North Eastern shores of the Baltic which froze for large parts of the year, cutting off supply routes and making international travel very challenging. As in other North European countries, in its early days the Finnish industry drew many of its industrialists and skilled workers from Britain. Later on, these were followed by a new social group that had emerged in Britain between the skilled workers and the mill owners: the cotton masters, technical specialists. 3 In Britain, this stratification was common in such industrial areas as Lancashire.

rnmPERE TAMPERE GUIDE PUBLISHED BY THE MUNICIPAL BOARD OF TRAVEL TAMPERE A HISTORICAL SUMMARY HPhe vicinity of the city is of very old origin. The scientists consider its age in millions of years and the most parts of Finland are geologically the oldest in Europe. A little to the north of Tampere, in Aitolahti, the oldest rock in the world has been found. The history of Kinlands shows that a steadily resident Finnish popula- tion lived about Tampere already in the 6th century. On the Pyynikki ridge and along the shores of Pyhäjärvi-lake there have been pagan sacri- fices and not far from the city the remains of an old fortress have been found. Around the waterfalls of Tampere in very early times the traders of the interior already came to barter. This Was due to the excellent Water- ways, and in due time, although very late, the city was founded. This happened in 1779, during the reign of king Gustaphus 111 of Sweden. The first map shows 56 lots, but they had to be divided between 80 applicants and these formed the first population of the city-to-be. A map on the last page indicates how the city has grown since. The founder of the City, kintf Oustaphus 111 The waterfall was) from the of Sweden. very beginning the nucleus of Tampere. Several manufacturers tried to exploit its power, but only in 1783 the first real factory, a paper mill was founded. Its premises are now owned by the city. The biggest factory was foun- ded in 1820 by Finlayson, a Scotchman and it still bears his name.

  • Cultural Trauma of the Civil War of 1918 Staged and Commemorated in Finland
NORDIC THEATRE STUDIES Vol. 31, No. 2. 2019, 102–131 Cultural Trauma of the Civil War of 1918 Staged and Commemorated in Finland PENTTI PAAVOLAINEN ABSTRACT: The Centennial of one of the cruelest of European civil wars fought in Finland between the Reds and the Whites from January to May 1918 has evoked a spectrum of theatre productions illustrating variations of styles and approaches on the events. The turn in the treatment of this cultural trauma occurred with the interpretations and narrative perspectives that were fixed in the 1960s, when an understanding for the defeated Red side was expressed in historiography, literature and theatre. Since that, the last six decades the Finnish theatre and public discourse on the Civil War have been dominated by the Red narrative as the memory of the 1918 Civil War provided an important part in the new identity politics for the 1969 generation. Since the 1980’s the topic was mostly put aside so that before the 2018 revivals of the Civil War topic, the productions seem to have been reactions by the artists confronting the developments at the end of the Cold War. Some theatrical events can even be tied to the cultural trauma of the 1969 left evoked by the collapse of the socialist block. The Centennial productions repeated the Red narrative but they also provided more balanced interpretations on the tragic events.
