This unique event will be held at 2 dozen venues stretching from Ventura to San Diego. There will be over 100 classes represented, including one-design, PHRF, cruisers, dinghies, R/C model boats and predicted log. Whether you are an experienced ocean racer, dinghy sailor or a cruiser that just wants to have a fun weekend on the water this is the event for you. With over 600 boats and 2,500 participants you have the opportunity to test your skills against some of the best sailors in our area. Come out to see if your team can earn one of the many take home trophies’ and maybe get your name on one of the perpetual trophies. The host clubs will be working very hard to make this a fun event and showcase what they offer the yachting community. Your participation in the event will support the Southern California Yachting. SCYA has been serving the yachting community for over 90 years. Activities include publishing the annual Race Calendar and Yacht Club Directory, sponsoring boating safety seminars, presenting honor awards to the member clubs and individuals, providing a service center to assist all our member clubs, and providing a yachting presence to public agencies having influence over the boating community. In select classes the Host Venue may waive this requirement and accept other entries. Contact the Host Venue for further information. 2.2 Participating classes are listed in this Notice and include handicap, one-design, model boats and predicted log. Classes not listed may apply to the SCYA Midwinter Chairman for assignment to a host club. Three entries are required to establish a class. All entrants must be current members of the fleet in which they race. Out of the area boats may obtain a guest handicap certificate from PHRF of Southern California by calling (562) 438-6712. 2.3 Boats competing in this regatta shall use the ratings applicable to the individual host yacht club’s venue where they race. 2.4 Entries can be mailed to the host yacht club, hand delivered there, or submitted on-line if the host yacht club so provides, before the entry deadline specified by each host yacht club. Host model yacht clubs may use their own entry forms. 2.5 One-design classes are requested to have an official representative at each host club before or during registration to resolve any issue relating to that class. 2.6 Entry fees: LOA of the boat: Less than 10 ft. 10 to 19.9 ft. 20-30 ft. Over 30 ft. O The turnout was the largest for this regatta since 1981 and featured not only a total of 51 Naples Sabots but also 35 catamarans, the largest turnout for multihulls in recent memory. ABYC’s Memorial Day Regatta has replaced what was the Hurricane Gulch Regatta for the local Hobie Cat sailors, and so there were not only Hobie Tigers sailing in a combined Formula 18 catamaran fleet but also some vener- able Hobie 16’s, which are experiencing quite a renaissance. While ABYC members Jeff Newsome and Tom DeLong made the jump into Sixteen’s for the weekend, the winner was a team with a familiar last name: Alter. Jeff and Cody Alter won in the eleven-boat class invented by the legendary Hobie Alter while Newsome took third. The eleven Formula 18’s also saw some familiar names as Dan DeLave and Eileen Haubl took second to Keith and Kurt Christiansen among the 11 cats in the division. Even the top three A-Cats had familiar ABYC names: Pete Melvin topped the fleet ahead of Pease Glaser in second and Jay Glaser in third. On Alamitos Bay, there were five divisions of Naples Sabots. Current ABYC Club Champions Freddie and Fred Stevens were one-two in the Senior Sabots, but Fred IV carded five firsts in six races while Fred III won on a tiebreaker with Jane MacNaboe.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low.

    2014 INTERNATIONAL NAPLES SABOT JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA Organizing Authority: International Naples Sabot Association (INSA) and the Balboa Bay Fleet Host: Newport Harbor Yacht Club (NHYC) August 4-7, 2014 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 1 RULES 1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rule s as defined in the Racing Rule s of Sailing (RRS) and the INSA Class Rule s, including the Championship Guidelines. 1.2 USCG approved PFD’s shall be worn at all times by competitors while on the water, other than brief periods while adding or removing clothing. The ‘Y’ flag will not be flown. This modifies rule 40 and the preamble to Part 4. 1.3 The US Sailing prescriptions to rules 60, 63.2 and 63.4 are deleted. 1.4 Breaches of instructions which are annotated [NP] will not be grounds for a protest by a boat. This changes rule 60.1(a). If the jury concludes that a boat has broken one of these rules, or rule 55, it may impose a penalty other than disqualification. In these cases, the discretionary penalty, if less than disqualification, will be represented by the scoring abbreviation “DPI”. Such assistance should be a key service to our members and therefore we are instigating access through a special link on the AYH website. Many of us will have started research in yacht club records and club libraries, which are often haphazard and incomplete.     1 Southern California Yachting Association Attention One Design/ PHRF/Cruisers/RC Model Boaters/ Predicted Log and Dinghy Racers Enter the 91st Midwinter Regatta 2020 February 8 and 9 or February 15 and 16, 2020 The two-weekend format, stretching from Morro Bay to Baja California and points east, will again enable host yacht clubs to select the best fit for racers wishing to participate in this unique event. This yachting tradition is a chance to test your skills against the best skippers on the West Coast or provide an opportunity to experience the thrill of competitive racing for the first time. The SCYA Midwinter Regatta, the nation's largest sailing competition, offers 26 venues, attracts more than 600 competing boats, 100 classes and more than 2,500 sailors. Our Midwinter Committee has been working closely with SCYA, the regatta's commercial sponsors and participating host clubs to ensure everyone has a great time. Each hosting yacht club showcases what they have to offer the sailing community.
