Arquidiocesana de SÃO PAULO Brazil is one of the many countries in the world that accepts refugees and gives them the protection they need while they cannot return safely to their countries of origin. The capital of Brazil is Brasilia, but São Paulo is the largest city of the country, with more than 11 million inhabitants and about 1,500 km2. This city was built by people from different parts of Brazil and the world. Immigrants, including refugees, SÃO PAULO participated in the massive growth of the city. That is why today the residents of São Paulo are people of diverse origins, cultures, religions, professions and social AND BRAZIL groups. For many years, São Paulo has been the Brazilian city that receives the majority of the refugees and asylum seekers FOR ASYLUM in the country. Around São Paulo there are other cities like Santo André, São SEEKERS AND Bernardo do Campo, São Caetano do Sul, Diadema and Gua- rulhos, among others. This group of cities is called “Grande REFUGEES São Paulo” (São Paulo and its metropolitan region). When you arrive in such a large and busy city, it is normal to feel disoriented and you might need help. It is even more diffi- cult if you cannot communicate in Portuguese - the language spoken by Brazilians, who for the most part do not speak any other languages. However fortunately you also find in São Paulo several points of support, which are maintained by non-governmental organi- zations or by agencies of the Brazilian Government. This GUIDE will help you find these places and get the right information on how to get help, and what you should do to take care of your asylum procedure.
