The Drill purpose of TRIDENT is to capture subsurface ice-rich String regolith in 10 cm ‘bites’ and deliver it to surface for Deployment Linear Stage analysis by MSolo mass spectrometer (VIPER and PRIME1) Feed Stage Flex and NIRVSS near infrared spectrometer (VIPER). Cable Cabling Bulkhead Drill Feed Linear TRIDENT’s bit integrated temperature sensor will measure Deploy Stage subsurface temperature while drilling telemetry would be Stage Flex Cable used to determine regolith strength, and via calibrations Brush Housing, Sample Delivery and in concert with other instruments, the fraction and Lower Launch Chute and Footpad the state of ice. Lock TRIDENT also has integrated heater in the 1 m drill string “Bite” Section Cuttings Pile to enable additional measurements (time permitting), such as thermal conductivity.
Bite Sampling
Deployment Advantages of “Bite Sampling” q Stratigraphy is preserved in 10 cm Lander “Bites” Concepts q More accurate material strength determination through Drill Bit Torque q Auger Torque (Side wall friction) is Rigid Dual minimized Z-Stage q More accurate downhole temperature q Lower overall power consumption q Higher Rate of Penetration
Rover Dual Z-Stage Arm-Deployed Single Stage Te s t i n g a t G R C q Test conditions: v Vacuum: < 1x10-6 torr TRL Maturation v Chamber Temperature: < -80°C Icebreaker: 2008-2010 v Regolith Temp.: < -150°C v Regolith NU-LHT-3M water doped: room dry, 2.5 wt%, 5 wt% (layers separated by Al foil) q >>30 holes drilled in several soil bins q MSolo and NIRVSS data correlated well with water TRIDENT CRUX 2005 concentration
