The musical heritage of Shirak of the 19th-20th centuries has its unique place and role in the development of the Armenian national music. This dissertation will serve as a unifying element in bringing the Armenians in the diaspora and in the homeland together through the power of music. The information collected for each piece includes instrumentation, duration, publisher information, and other details. This research will be beneficial for music students, conductors, orchestra managers, festival organizers, cultural event planning and those studying the influences of Armenian folk music in orchestral writing. It is especially intended to be useful in searching for music by Armenian composers for thematic and cultural programing, as it should aid in the acquisition of parts from publishers. In the early part of the 20th century, Armenian people were oppressed by the Ottoman government and a mass genocide against Armenians occurred. Many Armenians fled

NOSTALGIA, EMOTIONALITY, AND ETHNO-REGIONALISM IN PONTIC PARAKATHI SINGING BY IOANNIS TSEKOURAS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Donna A. Buchanan, Chair Professor Emeritus Thomas Turino Professor Gabriel Solis Professor Maria Todorova ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the multilayered connections between music, emotionality, social and cultural belonging, collective memory, and identity discourse. The ethnographic case study for the examination of all these relations and aspects is the Pontic muhabeti or parakathi. Parakathi refers to a practice of socialization and music making that is designated insider Pontic Greek. It concerns primarily Pontic Greeks or Pontians, the descendants of the 1922 refugees from Black Sea Turkey (Gr. Pontos), and their identity discourse of ethno-regionalism. Parakathi references nightlong sessions of friendly socialization, social drinking, and dialogical participatory singing that take place informally in coffee houses, taverns, and households. Parakathi performances are reputed for their strong Pontic aesthetics, traditional character, rich and aesthetically refined repertoire, and intense emotionality. Singing in parakathi performances emerges spontaneously from verbal socialization and emotional saturation. Singing is described as a confessional expression of deeply personal feelings

  • STUDIES in PHYSICAL CULTURE and TOURISM Vol.18, No.1, 2011
The organizational rhythmic structure of Greek dance STUDIES IN PHYSICAL CULTURE AND TOURISM Vol. 18, No. 1, 2011 VERENIKI PANAGOPOULOU, VASILEIOS SERBEZIS Department of Physical Education & Sport Science, Democritus University of Thrace, Komotini, Greece THE ORGANIZATIONAL RHYTHMIC STRUCTURE OF GREEK DANCE Key words: rhythm, stress, structural units, kinetic motif, kinetic cell. ABSTRACT The aim of the project was to examine the relationship between three ‘cornerstones’ of the organizational rhythmic structure of modern Greek dance. 16 Greek dances were chosen (n = 16) and 18 structural analyses of these dances were carried out based on the analytical morphological and taxonomic choreographic method adapted to the research protocol. To process the collected data, an analysis of frequencies and correlation analysis were carried out. The analysis of the three ‘cornerstones’ of studied dances revealed that the ratios between them follow the commonly accepted standard (1:1, 2:1, 3:4, 5:8). In particular, it can be established that modern-day Greek dance technique is directly related to lyrical, melodic and dynamic stress, while a unique correlation takes place between the kinetic cell and beat. The kinetic cells, in a specific proportion, create kinetic motifs of the dance phrase, which possess a relative autonomy without necessarily corresponding to a bar. INTRODUCTION The Ancient Greeks based their system of musical time on prosody, i.e. on the alternation of Since ancient times dance in Greece has been long and short syllables [6]. The present-day music perceived as a ‘three-cornered’ concept. According bar is tonic and not prosodic, thus the main to Aristoxenos [2], the three ‘adjustables’ of dance characteristic of modern Greek dance is tonality, included lyrics, melody and body movement, i.e., not time [18].
