© Norwegian Journal of Entomology. 8 December 2014 The Horse Flies (Diptera, Tabanidae) of Norway MORTEN FALCK Falck, M. 2014. The Horse Flies (Diptera, Tabanidae) of Norway. Norwegian Journal of Entomology 61, 219–264. The Norwegian species are reviewed, and keys are supplied for all species. The following species are reported as new to Norway: Chrysops viduatus (Fabricius, 1794), Atylotus latistriatus Brauer, 1880, Hybomitra aterrima (Meigen, 1820), Hybomitra solstitialis (Meigen 1820), Haematopota italica Meigen, 1804, Haematopota subcylindica Pandellé, 1883 and Tabanus miki Brauer, 1880. The finding of Hybomitra aterrima solves the question of whether this taxon is a southern form of Hybomitra auripila Meigen, 1820 or a good species, and the long standing controversies over this question. However, the identity of Atylotus latistriatus seems to offer an unresolved problem. Maps of distribution, and a check list to the Norwegian species are supplied, and new Norwegian names are proposed for each species. Key words: Diptera, Tabanidae, Chrysops, Atylotus, Hybomitra, Tabanus, Heptatoma, Haematopota, Atylotus latistriatus, Hybomitra aterrima, Norway, identification keys, distribution maps. The present report is a follow-up study to the soil sampling project and the present study has involved the mineralogical and compositional characterisation of the metasedimentary bedrock with focus on the economic potential in the rare earth elements (REE) of the area. The REE have been shown to be present in comparable concentration ranges in the soil and hard-rock samples, and the REE results obtained for aliquots of hard-rock samples following AR digestion, 4-Acid leaching and Li-borate fusion/decomposition closely match the results from soil pulps after an Aqua Regia (AR) digestion. Total contents for the REE determined in bedrock using the above methods range between 19 and 429 ppm, indicating an overall limited economic potential for the metasandstones with respect to the REE.

One of the important objectives of the project has been to listen to and take into account what Sami people expect from the work on documentation and protection of their traditional know ledge. Special gratitude is owed to communities and individuals in the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish parts of Sápmi, who eagerly participated in community meetings and other project activities. Sami communities have been important partners in the project, which would not have been possible without their support, collabo ration and genuine interest. Arctic Medical Research, Vol. 47: Suppl. 1, pp. 218-225, 1988 GENETIC COMPOSITION AND VARIATION IN SAAMI PC)PULATIONS IN NORTHERN NORWAY COMPARED WITH NORDIC POPULATIONS IN MIDDLE NORWAY A study of non-metric skull variants E. lregren (1) and P.-E. lsberg (2) Institute of Archaeology (1) and Department of Statistics (2), University of Lund, Lund, Sweden Abstract. Skulls of six Saami populations from Northern Norway as well as of two Nor dic groups from Middle Norway were studied concerning non-metric traits. All the in dividuals derive from church-yards of Post-Medieval origin. The frequencies and combinations of non-metric traits were evaluated. Several traits 122/791 showed significant differencies between the two ethnic groups at the 5 % level. 146 individuals were used to construct a model in order to discriminate be tween the Saami and the Nordic group. The ethnic origin of a total of 475 individuals was predicted. Of the individuals from the Saami church-yards 92. 7% were grouped as Saamis. Of the skeletal sample from Middle Norway 52.3% were grouped as Nordic. Arctic Medical Research, vol. 47: suppl. 1, pp. 218-225, 1988. • Revoicing Sámi Narratives
REVOICING SÁMI NA rr ATIVE S Doctoral Dissertation in Sámi Studies, Umeå University, 2008. Cocq, Coppélie Revoicing Sámi narratives. North Sámi storytelling at the turn of the 20th century. Department of Language Studies, Umeå University Umeå, 2008. 270 pp. Monograph. Abstract Revoicing Sámi narratives investigates the relationship between storytellers, contexts and collective tradition, based on an analysis of North Sámi narratives published in the early 1900s. This dissertation “revoices” narratives by highlighting the coexistence of different voices or socio-ideological languages in repertoires and by considering Sámi narratives as utterances by storytellers rather than autonomous products of tradition. Thus, this study serves as an act of “revoicing,” of recovering voices that had been silenced by the scientific discourse which enveloped their passage into print. Narrators considered “tradition bearers” were interviewed or wrote down folk narratives that were interpreted as representative of a static, dying culture. The approach chosen in this thesis highlights the dynamic and conscious choices of narrative strategies made by these storytellers and the implications of the discourses expressed in narration. By taking into account the intense context of social change going on in Sápmi at the time the narratives emerged, as well as the context that includes narrators, ethnographers and tradition, the analysis demonstrates that storytelling is an elaboration that takes place in negotiation with tradition, genres and individual preferences. The repertoires of four storytellers are studied according to a methodological framework consisting in critical discourse analysis from a folkloristic perspective. The analysis underscores the polyphony of the narratives by Johan Turi, who related with skillfulness of tradition by taking position as a conscious social actor.

  • Norway: Drilling to the Future
OOFFSHOREFFSHORE FFRORONTIERSNTIERS Norway: Drilling to the Future A Transocean Inc. Publication February 2006 Robert L. Long President and CEO Welcome Norway, the world’s third-largest oil exporter, has achieved several offshore milestones, many supported by Transocean’s safe, efficient and environmentally-protective operations. The Polar Pioneer crews, for example, drilled the first production well on the Troll field and went on to construct a world-record horizontal well for Norsk Hydro. That achievement helped make the difference in part of the field being deemed commercial. Last year, the Transocean Arctic became the world’s first semisubmersible to drill a sidetrack well through a subsea well’s production string on the Norne field for Statoil, opening a new route to raising petroleum-recovery rates for our client. In addition, the Transocean Searcher, Transocean Leader and Transocean Winner have played key roles in our clients’ successes in Norway. Also important is our shared vision with our customers of an incident-free environment as recognized by the Polar Pioneer in 2001 becoming the first contract mobile offshore drilling unit to receive Norsk Hydro’s upstream HS&E award. Outside of Norway, employees on the jackup Trident 8 and JOIDES Resolution scientific coring drillship achieved the Transocean Safety Vision by not having a single work-related safety incident in 2005. Also last year, employees worldwide reduced Transocean’s TRIR (total recordable incident rate) to 1.06 incidents per 200,000 hours worked, the lowest TRIR in the company’s history and down from 1.29 the year before. With additional progress, we can achieve our 2006 goal of 0.90 TRIR which remains the same as last year.
