Index of

This is an index of persons who have feasts in one or more witnesses, or who are included in calendars and litanies. Some names not in their original forms have been normalized into what seems the commonest English usage; e.g., Albert the Great, not Albertus Magnus; Brice, not Britius; Etheldreda, not Ætheldrytha or Æthelthryth. Ælfheah/Alphege (and variants) is a special case, here usually given the Old English spelling in contexts before the Conquest. Minor differences in spelling (like Maccabees/ Machabees, Osith/Osyth) are ignored. The main feasts relating to Christ and the Virgin Mary are also included.

General Index

Place names and historical characters are indexed only for pages at which there is substantive discussion (liturgical commemorations are in the separate Index of Saints). Modern scholars mentioned in the text are included, as are those named in the footnotes if there is analytical or qualitative comment as distinct from mere bibliographical reference. Medieval persons widely known as “of somewhere,” like Francis of Assisi or Richard of Chichester, are generally indexed under their given names; nonetheless, clear surnames take precedence even if they once designated places of origin: John (de) Grandisson under Grandisson, under Chichele. The prepositions “de” and “of” are ignored in alphabetization; “ch.” = “[parish] church.” Specific designations (abbot, bishop, etc.) are provided only when there is otherwise likely to be confusion or unclarity.
