I remember a time when a potato knife and my mother’s nail file sufficed to finish the task. Very simple fundamentals. Sometimes I got really lucky and found some leftover scraps of sandpaper in my dad’s toolbox that he used to sand the rust off his screwdrivers or any tool that was left out in the rain… usually by me or my brother. Those were the days! When building and painting a kit took about a few hours and the result made you happy. So where did I drop off the cliff? Especially when I was always very reluctant to try something new. To give you an example, a long time ago I used to employ globs of tube glue all the time. Velpon, Britfix 77 or any gel formula I could lay my hands on. I didn’t care about the strings that I’d spun after gluing the fuselage or wings together. That was something that belonged to the territory and you dealt with it. When liquid glue was introduced in the early seventies, I climbed on a soap box and cried blasphemy! It was never going to work! Now if I don’t have my Plastic Weld close or liquid cement, I panic. What about my scalpel, bladed knife, cutting mat, putty applicator, punch & die sets, sanding sticks, magnifier, razor saw, sprue nipper, needle files, scissors, caliper, scriber, hemo- stats, 3 versions of super glue and ten different tweezers? The list goes on and on. I realize that I need those things before I can function properly. Why? Well the answer is very simple. Having the right tool for the right job is part of the culture we are in. We all evolved into the 21st century without knowing it. Even us modelers. It is all about quality, convenience, availability and yes, there maybe be a little bit of snobbism thrown into the equation. But it feels so good to sit in front of your workbench and admire all the gadgets that you have acquired and at your disposal. The thought that you can tackle the most complicated build and have all the tools to do it, feels like absolute gratification. That quality by itself also became part of our hobby. It carries the same philosophy behind it as the stack of un-built model kits we have in our garage. We “need it all” to function at our best. Did we become snobs in the real sense of the word? Not necessarily. Now, I have the same en- joyment as when I was a kid – I have just set the bar a bit higher on the quality I expect out of my builds. It makes me happy at the end of the day. And that is what it is all about. It is just a different stage in my life where I have evolved, learned and improved the skills of my hobby. It might take me forever to finish a model and sometimes I never do, moving on to something else. But the essence of it all is that it brings me fulfillment. And…I have the tools to do it! Cheers!
