Air Force Next-Generation Bomber: Background and Issues for Congress Jeremiah Gertler Specialist in Military Aviation December 22, 2009 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL34406 CRS Report for Congress Prepared for Members and Committees of Congress Air Force Next-Generation Bomber: Background and Issues for Congress Summary As part of its proposed FY2010 defense budget, the Administration proposed deferring the start of a program to develop a next-generation bomber (NGB) for the Air Force, pending the completion of the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) and associated Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), and in light of strategic arms control negotiations with Russia. The Administration’s proposed FY2010 budget requested no funding specifically identified in public budget documents as being for an NGB program. Prior to the submission of the FY2010 budget, the Air Force was conducting research and development work aimed at fielding a next-generation bomber by 2018. Although the proposed FY2010 defense budget proposed deferring the start of an NGB program, the Secretary of Defense and Air Force officials in 2009 have expressed support for the need to eventually start such a program. The Air Force’s FY2010 unfunded requirements list (URL)—a list of programs desired by the Air Force but not funded in the Air Force’s proposed FY2010 budget—includes a classified $140-million item that some press accounts have identified as being for continued work on a next-generation bomber. The development and testing process was long, incloved, and troubled, and deliveries did not begin until 2005. The Bushmaster is based on a design originally conceived by the Irish company of Timoney; considerable portions of the Bushmaster are therefore manufactured under a licensing agreement with Timoney, though production is undertaken wholly in Australia. ADI began the part of the design process done in Australia, but production later passed to Thales Australia, who also developed several variants. (Virtually all of these variants differ primarily in internal arrangements and equipment; externally, almost all of the different versions differ little from each other.) The primary users of the Bushmaster are the Australian Army and Air Force, but it is also used by the Dutch Army and British Army.

  • The Last of the Dive-Bombers by Walter J
The Army Air Forces turned to dive-bombers for accuracy, but the A-24 Banshee found itself in the wrong places at the wrong times. The Last of the Dive-bombers By Walter J. Boyne n warfare, as in business, timing and location are everything. The classic Douglas dive-bomber of IWorld War II served the Navy brilliantly as the SBD Dauntless, while the virtu- ally identical A-24 Banshee had only a mediocre career with the US Army Air Forces. There were many reasons for this, but the main one was the combination of the Navy’s long-standing training in dive-bombing and the nature of its tar- gets, which allowed the SBD to perform. In contrast, dive-bombing was thrust upon the heavy-bomber-centric AAF following the spectacular successes of the German Junkers Ju 87 Stuka in 70 AIR FORCE Magazine / December 2010 the initial phases of World War II. MILITARY SEA SERVICES MUSEUM, INC. SEA SERVICES SCUTTLEBUTT June 2018 A message from the President Greetings, Summer arrived in Sebring. It has been very hot (high 80s, low 90s) the last couple of weeks. June also is start of the rainy and hurricane seasons in Florida and we have been receiving almost daily showers since late May. Hopefully our Northern members are enjoying cooler and drier air. So far this year we have had close to 600 visitors, hopefully headed for a record number of visitors for the year. Summer normally brings a decline in the number of visitors. This is a great time for visits from Scouts and other groups----can pretty much have the Museum to John Cecil themselves. Just let us know in advance when your group wants to visit (863) 385-0992 or [email protected]. We received many favorable comments on our Memorial Day observance. It was held in front of the Museum with attendees seated under a large tent. Towards the end of the observance, it began to rain and all attendees came inside the Museum where the observance was concluded. This also worked out well as we had a cake cutting ceremony planned inside to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Museum which opened its doors as the Military Sea Services Museum on Memorial Day 1998. See additional comments and photos elsewhere in this "Scuttlebutt." Photos were provided by Fred Carino, Cris Carino, Diana Borders and Donald Laylock. Have a great summer. Stay safe!
