CANNON OR MACHINE GUN? The Second World War Aircraft Gun Controversy © Anthony G Williams This article first appeared in Aeroplane Magazine in September 2004. It is based on material in Flying Guns – World War 2: Development of Aircraft Guns, Ammunition and Installations 1933-45 The Second World War stimulated an important advance in aircraft gun armament. The fighters of most combatant nations began the war with a few riflecalibre machine-guns (RCMGs) of 7.5-8 mm calibre, but, by the end of the conflict, cannon of 20 mm or greater calibre were standard. The one exception was the USA, which relied overwhelmingly on the 12.7 mm (0.50 inch) M2 Browning heavy machine-gun (HMG). Students of armament history continue to argue: why did this happen, and were the Americans right? EARLY FIGHTING In 1939 the RAF's new Spitfire and Hurricane fighters were remarkable for their heavy battery of eight wing-mounted 0.303 inch (7.7 mm) RCMGs; twice as powerful as that of any other major fighter. In contrast, Germany's Luftwaffe had been watching the French use of engine-mounted cannon. In 1932 this resulted in a requirement for a fighter with two RCMGs or a single 20 mm cannon. The weapon considered was the large, very powerful but slow-firing RheinmetallBorsig MG C/30L, firing through the propeller hub. An initial experiment with a prototype Heinkel He 112 in the Spanish Civil War showed that this installation was unsatisfactory for aerial combat, though effective in ground attack. Germany then went to the opposite extreme and selected the small, low- velocity Swiss Oerlikon FF 20 mm cannon for development. -

Nicolas Trudgian Alpine Thunder A new limited edition featuring the Me262s of JV44, Adolf Galland's famous jet fighter wing, during the final phase of World War II. By late April 1945 most of the Third Reich had been cut to shreds by the advancing Allied forces and those units remaining intact were regrouping in southern Germany and Austria. With American advance units nearing the outskirts of Munich, on 28th April Adolf Galland took the decision to evacuate his precious jets to Salzburg, deep in the mountains. Bad weather prevented their departure until the following morning and they only just managed to escape under the noses of the encircling Americans. Galland had hoped to battle on with JV44 but the unsuitable mountain airfields prevented the famous fighter wing from doing much to delay the inevitable. So the beautiful Alpine meadows became the final resting place for what was potentially the most formidable fighter unit of the war. In just a few days the jets were left abandoned. Der Messerschmitt-Komplex Augsburg und die Messerschmitt AG Ein Überblick geschichtsagentur augsburg Vorab Dies ist die Beta-Version einer Ausstellung über den „Messerschmitt-Komplex“ in Augsburg. Gemeint ist dabei zum einen die enge Verstrickung von Willy Messerschmitt, der Messerschmitt AG und der Stadt Augsburg mit einem ausgedehnten ZwangsarbeiterInnen- und KZ-Außenlager-System, vor allem in den letzten Kriegsjahren. Gemeint ist damit aber auch die Tabuisierung der Messerschmitt’schen Verstrickung in das NS-System, wie sie vor allem in Augsburg gepflegt wird, wo Willy Messerschmitt immer noch eher ein „Held“ ist. Bei der Vorbereitung der Ausstellung wurde versucht, aus den vorhandenen Informationen, Darstellungen und Bildern einen kritischen Blick auf Willy Messerschmitt und die Messerschmitt AG zusammenzutragen. Dabei ist die Zahl der Darstellungen begrenzt und beschränkt sich meist auf die technischen Leistungen Messerschmitts bzw. „entschuldigen“ sein Verhalten. Die Quellen dieser Darstellungen verbleiben dabei meist im „Graubereich“. In einem nächsten Schritt müsste man daher noch einmal die Originalquellen untersuchen, die jedoch sehr verstreut, unvollständig und teilweise unzugänglich sind. Der damit verbundene zeitliche und finanzielle Aufwand ist derzeit aber nicht leistbar. Auf jeden Fall wäre es aber wünschenswert, wenn technischer Aufstieg und moralischer Fall der Messerschmitt AG stärker ins historische Bewusstsein Augsburg rücken würde. Konstruktive Kritik und Vorschläge an dieser Beta-Version sind jederzeit willkommen.
