Nr. 1559, flown by Hptm. Wilhelm Balthasar, CO of 7./JG 27, Carquebut, France, A July 1940 The future Knight Cross with Oak Leaves recipient, Wilhelm Balthasar, was born on February 2nd, 1914 in Fulda. In 1933 he joined Reichswehr, in 1935, by his own request, he was transferred to Luftwaffe where he underwent the pilot training. During the Spanish Civil War he initially served with bomber and reconnaissance units, since September 1937 with fighter detachment of the Legion Condor. In March 1938 he returned to Germany. At the outbreak of World War II Oblt. Balthasar served as 1. Staffel JG 1 commander. This unit saw combat for the first time during the offensive against The Netherlands, Belgium and France. It was the time when Balthasar demonstrated his marksman skills, during the Western Europe campaign he shot down 23 enemy airplanes. As of June 5th, 1./JG 1 was re-designated as 7./JG 27. On September 1st, 1940 he was promoted to command III./JG 3 and in the air battles over the Southern England achieved further seventeen kills. In the meantime, on February 16th, 1941, he was promoted to command JG 2. His luck ran out during the combat with the RAF fighters over Aire on July 3rd, 1941. During the dive his Bf 109F-4 wing broke off and Balthasar perished at the impact with the ground. Balthasar’s aircraft, camouflaged in RLM 71/02/65 colors, carried the non-standard marking on the engine cowling. There is a unit marking painted under the windshield, kill markings are painted on the vertical tail surface and rudder. W. Nr. 5901, flown by Oblt.

It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. The Bf 109 was produced in greater quantities than any other fighter aircraft in history, with 30,573 units built alone during 1939-1945. Fighter production totalled 47% of all German aircraft production, and the Bf 109 accounted for 57% of all fighter types produced[1]. The Bf 109 was the standard fighter of the Luftwaffe for the duration of World War II, although it began to be partially replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 starting in 1941. The Bf 109 scored more aircraft kills in World War II than any other aircraft. At various times it served as an air superiority fighter, an escort fighter, an interceptor, a ground-attack aircraft and a reconnaissance aircraft. Although the Bf 109 had weaknesses, including a short range, and especially a sometimes difficult to handle narrow, outward-retracting undercarriage, it stayed competitive with Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war.

Once deprived of their Bf 109 escorts, the German bombers were acutely vulnerable to the predations of British Spitfires and Hurricanes. © Osprey Publishing • www.ospreypublishing.com he story of the German Luftwaffe (Air Force) has been an abiding focus of military Thistorians since the end of World War II in 1945. It is not difficult to see why. Like many aspects of the German war machine, the Luftwaffe was a crowning achievement of the German rearmament programme. During the 1920s and early 1930s, the air force was a shadowy organization, operating furtively under the tight restrictions on military development imposed by the Versailles Treaty. Yet through foreign-based aircraft design agencies, civilian air transport and nationalistic gliding clubs, the seeds of a future air force were nevertheless kept alive and growing in Hitler’s new Germany, and would eventually emerge in the formation of the Luftwaffe itself in 1935. The nascent Luftwaffe thereafter grew rapidly, its ranks of both men and aircraft swelling under the ambition of its commander-in-chief, Hermann Göring.

Although it was comparable with the British Hawker Hurricane and early models of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109, it could not hold its own against the more powerful Bf 109E and Bf 110C. The MS.406 was the mainstay of the Armée de l’Air during the ‘Phoney War’, but it had begun to be phased out in favour of the more potent Dewoitine D.520 at the turn of 1940. However, owing to the limited capacities of the French aircraft industry, five of the twelve units that started the war with Moranes had to carry on until the bitter end with the same type.
