It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. The Bf 109 was produced in greater quantities than any other fighter aircraft in history, with 30,573 units built alone during 1939-1945. Fighter production totalled 47% of all German aircraft production, and the Bf 109 accounted for 57% of all fighter types produced[1]. The Bf 109 was the standard fighter of the Luftwaffe for the duration of World War II, although it began to be partially replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 starting in 1941. The Bf 109 scored more aircraft kills in World War II than any other aircraft. At various times it served as an air superiority fighter, an escort fighter, an interceptor, a ground-attack aircraft and a reconnaissance aircraft. Although the Bf 109 had weaknesses, including a short range, and especially a sometimes difficult to handle narrow, outward-retracting undercarriage, it stayed competitive with Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war.

  • Norske Heinkel He 115
Teknisk beskrivelse. Utviklingen av Heinkel He 115 startet i 1935 av Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke G.m.b.H. i Rostock i Tyskland. Flyene ble produsert tre serier (-A, -B, -C) i mange varianter. Spesifikasjoner Heinkel He 115A-2(N): Vingespenn 22,30 m Lengde 17,30 m Høyde 6,60 m Nettovekt 5 300 kg Maksimal startvekt 9 1000 kg Topphastighet 320 km/t Marsjfart 285 km/t Topphøyde 5 500 m Rekkevidde 2500 km 2 stk BMV 132N 9 sylindret Motorer stjernemotor, 975 HK 1 stk mitraljøse Bestykning 1 stk 20 mm kanon En torpedo på 800 kg Våpenlast Tre 250 kgs bomber I norsk tjeneste.

  • CANNON OR MACHINE GUN? the Second World War Aircraft Gun Controversy
CANNON OR MACHINE GUN? The Second World War Aircraft Gun Controversy © Anthony G Williams This article first appeared in Aeroplane Magazine in September 2004. It is based on material in Flying Guns – World War 2: Development of Aircraft Guns, Ammunition and Installations 1933-45 The Second World War stimulated an important advance in aircraft gun armament. The fighters of most combatant nations began the war with a few riflecalibre machine-guns (RCMGs) of 7.5-8 mm calibre, but, by the end of the conflict, cannon of 20 mm or greater calibre were standard. The one exception was the USA, which relied overwhelmingly on the 12.7 mm (0.50 inch) M2 Browning heavy machine-gun (HMG). Students of armament history continue to argue: why did this happen, and were the Americans right? EARLY FIGHTING In 1939 the RAF's new Spitfire and Hurricane fighters were remarkable for their heavy battery of eight wing-mounted 0.303 inch (7.7 mm) RCMGs; twice as powerful as that of any other major fighter. In contrast, Germany's Luftwaffe had been watching the French use of engine-mounted cannon. In 1932 this resulted in a requirement for a fighter with two RCMGs or a single 20 mm cannon. The weapon considered was the large, very powerful but slow-firing RheinmetallBorsig MG C/30L, firing through the propeller hub. An initial experiment with a prototype Heinkel He 112 in the Spanish Civil War showed that this installation was unsatisfactory for aerial combat, though effective in ground attack. Germany then went to the opposite extreme and selected the small, low- velocity Swiss Oerlikon FF 20 mm cannon for development.

Notices and abstracts from the Scientific and Technical Press are prepared primarily for_ the information of Scientific and Technical Staffs. Particular attention is paid to the work carried out in foreign countries, on the assumption that the more accessible British work (for example that published by the Aeronautical Research Committee^ is already known to these Staffs. Requests from scientific and technical staffs for further information of transla tions should be addressed to R.T,P.3, Ministry of Aircraft Production, and not to the Royal Aeronautical Society. Only a limited number of the articles quoted from foreign journals are trans lated and usually only the original can be supplied on loan. ALBUM OF ERICH SCHATZKI 1. 1898 – 1991 Erich Schatzki and Family Erich Schatzki, born January 23 1898, in Klafeld (Siegen) Nord-Rhein Westfalen, Germany. Died in Palo Alto, CA USA on August 28, 1991. German/American pilot, aircraft designer, manager, entrepreneur and lecturer. Son of the Jewish engineer Ferdinand Schatzki (1857–1910), Oberingenieur at the Siegener Verzinkerei AG in Klafeld-Geisweid and his wife Beate Stern from Schmallenberg. Erich S. had four brothers, who all survived the Second World War. Walter became a book seller and antiquarian in New York; Richard a famous radiologist at Boston MA, where he discovered the so-called Schatzi-ring, a throat affliction. He loved music and had at home two Steinway grand pianos. Paul studied medicine and became a well known physician in Australia and Herbert was a textile manufacturer. Their lives were strongly marked by their Jewish lineage that forced them to flee their country of birth in the 1930’s. Erich studied engineering at Hannover and Darmstadt Technische Hochschule (1923). He received his Dr.-Ing. in 1929 in Berlin. In 1933, after a successful career as a pilot and engineer at Junkers and Luft Hansa, he was forced to take refuge in Switzerland and later Holland where he designed fighter aircraft. He was forced to flee again in 1940. From 1943 to 1953 he worked as a design and development engineer for Republic Aviation on Long Island, USA, with a short interlude from 1949 to 1950 in Israel. After a stint as consultant in the USA, he lived again in Israel from 1958 to 1962, working for Israel Aircraft Industries as a Director of Engineering.

Brewster Buffalo F2A "Buffalo" F2A-1 of US Navy squadron VF-3. Type Single seat carrier-based fighter Manufacturer Brewster Aeronautical Corporation Designed by Dayton Brown and R.D. MacCart Maiden flight 2 December 1937 Introduced April 1939 Retired 1948 Primary users United States Navy Royal Air Force Produced 1938-1941 Number built 509 The Brewster Buffalo, or Brewster F2A, was an American fighter plane which saw limited service with both Allied and Finnish air forces during World War II. The F2A was the first monoplane fighter aircraft used by the United States Navy. It was derided by some American servicemen as "flying coffins"[1] due to a reputation for poor construction and marginal performance. Despite this, with the Ilmavoimat (Finnish Air Force), the F2A proved a potent weapon versus the Red Air Force. Design and development In the 1930s, the Brewster Aeronautical Corporation was a relatively new manufacturer which had wanted to enter the aviation market. In 1934 they secured a Navy contract for an aircraft of original Brewster design, the XSBA-1 scout bomber. The XSBA was rather innovative for its time, and was an all-metal monoplane featuring a retractable landing gear and an enclosed bomb bay. New business for Brewster came in the form of a 1935 US Navy requirement for an aircraft carrier- based fighter intended to replace the Grumman F3F biplane. Two aircraft designs were considered: the Brewster Model 139 and the Grumman XF4F-1 which was still a "classic" biplane. The Model 139 incorporated sophisticated features for the time: a monoplane configuration, wing flaps, arresting gear, retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit.

SPRING 2015 - Volume 62, Number 1 WWW.AFHISTORICALFOUNDATION.ORG Call For Papers Violent Skies: The Air War Over Vietnam A Symposium Proposed for October 2015 Four military service historical foundations—the Air Force Historical Foundation, the Army Historical Foundation, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, and the Naval Historical Foundation—recognize that a half century has passed since the United States became militarily engaged in Southeast Asia, and hope to sponsor a series of conferences involving scholars and veterans, aimed at exploring aspects and conse- quences of what once was known as America’s Longest War. For the first conference in the series, since all military services employed their combat aircraft capabilities in that conflict, the leaders of the four nonprofit organizations agree that the air war over Southeast Asia offers a compelling joint topic for reflective examination and discus- sion. The intent is to host a symposium on this subject in the national capital region on Thurs- day and Friday, October 15 and 16, 2015, potentially extending into Saturday, October 17. Other stakeholder organizations will be approached to join as co-sponsors of this event. The organizers of the symposium envision plenary and concurrent sessions to accommodate a wide va- riety of topics and issues. Panel participants will be allotted 20 minutes to present their research or discuss their experiences. A panel chair will be assigned to provide commentary and moderate discussion. Com- menters from academia, veterans, Vietnamese émigrés, and scholars from the region may be invited to pro- vide additional insights. Panel/Paper proposals may employ both chronological and topical approaches: Examples of chronological subjects can include: U.S.
