(1) Afromosia //

This is a great substitute for wood. It also has many nice features of its own. Afromosia is hard with interlocked to straight grain. Boards are large and exceptionally clear. An attractive striped grain figure is very common as well. This wood is hard and heavy. It is excellent for strong and very lasting furniture.

UTILITY This is the most appropriate wood for building. It’s also excellent for decorative veneer, desks, and flooring.

(2) Anigre // Aningeria spp

This wood has a medium to coarse texture. Its grains are usually straight and sometimes wavy; often with a fiddleback, mottled, bees wing figure. Generally reported to machine very well. This wood is great for making lasting furniture.

UTILITY This wood is perfect for lasting furniture, cabinets and interior millwork.

(3) Beli // Julbernardia pellegriniana

This wood is loaded with delightful and dense, high-contrast stripes of creamy and chocolate brown. It’s am awe-inspiring wood which amazes anyone who comes across it. This wood glimmers even more with a finish. It’s hard but not difficult. This wood is highly recommended for any kind of decorative project that needs a special touch.

(4) Bubinga // tessmannii

This is a very beautiful, attractive wood. Fine grained. Hard and heavy. Takes a high lustrous finish. The wood works without difficulty except for gum pockets. Some logs are figured with a wavy, rosy grain. This wood is excellent for making musical instruments and extremely lasting furniture.

This is one of the most famous African , Ebony is a very dark, almost black and dark wood that is also very dense. Due to its extreme hardness, it is commonly used for the fretboard on a . Ebony lists among the top decorative wood types on Earth.

It becomes very stable after seasoning especially. It is hard and heavy with a very fine texture. It’s famous for being extremely beautiful and hard, dense. It takes a high glossy finish.

(6) IROKO, African teak wood // Chlorophora excelsa

Iroko is most probably the best teak wood in the world. Iroko does have good weathering properties and therefore also serves as the perfect substitute for many teak wood around the world. Iroko shares also similar colour ranges with teak wood. It has a medium to coarse texture with an interlocking grain that often produces attractive patterns. Open pores requires filling for a smooth finish. It is very convenient to work with both power and hand .

(7) LIMBA // Terminalia superba

Lumber wood is separated by colours and sold as white (without black streaks) or black (without white streaks). The wood is relatively soft and very easy to work with. It does have a medium coarse texture. Its open pores require filling for a smooth surface. This is a great wood for furniture and musical instruments.

(8) LOVOA // Lovoa trichiliodes

This is a specially beautiful and elegant wood with ribbon figure. It colour is somewhat golden and will darken with time. As it ages, the Lovoa wood slightly changes its aspect, becoming, according to many, even more elegant. It is a used for making many thing as illustrated below.

(9) African // ivorensis

African Mahogany is the English name for a dark, reddish-brown wood whose scientific name is Khaya anthoteca. In West Africa, where it grows, it is referred to as the Acajou wood. Its stunning colour, texture and grain give it a very close resemblance to the classic Honduras Mahogany. It’s relatively hard and works well

both with power and hand tools. It is highly lustrous and polishes

extremely well. This is a very durable wood.

UTILITY We highly recommend using this wood for furniture, cabinets, interiors, boat building, veneer, desks, cabinets, entry doors, stairs, mouldings and trim.

(10) Makore/ African Cherry // Mimusops heckelii

This is a fine, straight grain wood, and some logs will have an interlocked grain that produces an attractive mottled figure. The wood glues well. This wood is used for high end furniture, airplane, ship cabinetry, etc.

(11) MOVINGUI // Distemonanthus benthamianus

This is a medium to fine grained wood that often features mottle or bees wing figure. The best figured logs are processed into veneers, and on rare occasion the logs will be sawn into lumber. It's Janka hardness rating is 1230, it is somehow identical to red . This wood is used for making fine furniture and music instruments.

(12) Padouk //Pterocarpus soyauxii

This wood is very popular in the furniture makers. It has a uniquely beautiful red grain which is highly appreciated. It is also very dense, extremely durable, and very resistant to moisture. When freshly cut, the wood is bright orange red, it evolves into an elegant reddish brown with time. It is moderately hard and densely heavy. It and planes easily to a very smooth, perfect surface. This is a great wood for flooring, furniture and more.

(13) Pearwood (African)// Baillonella toxisperma

Featuring an interlocking, yet straight, grain Pearwood, this Baillonella wood is attractive, stable and uniform. Its surface often displays some slight figure or shimmer. Again, this wood is extraordinarily stable. Its fine textured makes it good for both machining and hand operations. This wood is great for cabinetmaking, construction and more.

(14) Poculi // Berlinia spp

The wood is moderately coarse and hard, but very easy to work with both using machines or hand tools. This wood is also perceived as a classic exotic wood. It has a striking resemblance to zebrawood, but has a more rosy red colour which makes it more elegant. This wood has the reputation of being very attractive.

(15) // cylindricum

This is a gorgeous mahogany wood. It resembles the Honduras Mahogany, except with much finer texture which emphasises on its attractiveness. Sapele is also a lustrous wood which works fairly well in basically all operations: planning, sawing, routing, sanding and more. It is recommended for boat, ship building, home building, very lasting furniture and more.

(16) Shedua // Guibourtia arnoldiana

This wood is moderately coarse. It has interlocked grain that produces striped and often curly figures. Also called Ovangkol, this type of wood is often used for highly figured veneers. It is hard, heavy and takes a glass- like finish. This is an excellent wood for making all kinds of high end furniture.

(17) Tamarind // Tamarindus indica

This species of wood has a good decay resistance properties and is also resistant to insect attack. Tamatind wood is also known for the making of durable furniture, carvings, turned objects and much more.

(18) Wenge // Millettia laurentii

This is a truly amazing and unique wood that's nearly 100% black. It’s strong, dense and extremely beautiful. Its worldwide stable reputation allows it to top the list of most famous quality woods in the world. Wenge is also marked with slightly lighter brown streaks which gives the wood an unusual, yet delightfully attractive appearance. (19) Zebrawood // Microberlinia brazzavillensis

This gorgeous wood was named after the animal zebra due to its impressive multiple stripes. Zebrawood has a medium to coarse texture and a wavy, sometimes interlocked grain pattern. When worked appropriately, Zebrawood wood takes a clear finish without issue. Anything built from this wood may be considered as a piece of art. Zebrawood is perfect for making persuasively attractive furniture.

(20) Coconut

Cocos nucifera is often called by its French name, Cocotier. In English it is called coconut. This tree is light brown or beige in colour, and extremely dense. It is recommended for making furniture, floors, etc.

Also known as Gambeya, Longhi is a moderately dense wood with a distinct light-brown grain. The wood must be carefully dried, as it is susceptible to fungus. It is considered to be moderately durable, and moderately stable. Longhi has a solid strength-to- weight ratio, which makes it a popular choice for beautiful flooring and decking.

This wood is popular for making fine furniture, beautiful flooring, cabinetry, decking and more. Longhi wood is also great for making musical instruments and much more.
