DIAMOND TROPICAL HARDWOODS Exotic Hardwoods from Latin America Hand-picked Highly Figured Wood 2020 WWW.DIAMONDTROPICALHARDWOODS.COM TEL: 215.257.2556 TEL: 215.453.2196 FAX: 206.289.1008 Environmental Conscience The story of Diamond Tropical Hardwoods grew out of a desire to help and to serve others. Kevin and Christine Yardley met while both were studying at Harvard University. Upon graduating, the newlyweds volunteered to teach English for the WorldTeach Organization in rural Costa Rica. Because there was no guarantee of them being stationed in the same area, Christine became a teacher in the program while Kevin began dedicating his prodigious energy to protecting the environment in an entrepreneurial way. Costa Rica had some of the fastest deforestation rates in the world, so there was a desperate need to offset this environmental destruction. Costa Rica’s bio-diversity includes 5 percent of all known species in an area the size of West Virginia. The reforestation effort in Costa Rica has done a great deal of good. In 1992, Diamond Tropical Hardwoods bought their first degraded cattle farm and began planting teak. In addition to farming teak, they have planted seventy other species including endangered native trees such as cocobolo rosewood, Spanish cedar and mahogany. Today, their plantations protect more than 1000 acres of primary and secondary jungle. The company has seen the impact of logging in the rainforest and the widespread harm that it produces. This is why Diamond Tropical Hardwoods adheres to internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council environmental principles and has chain-of-custody (CoC). Our business is a member of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT! USE ONLY RESPONSIBLY REFORESTED, SUSTAINABLE HARDWOODS! Teak has natural oil and silica that make it extremely durable. This grand hardwood has been used for centuries in construction, and in modern times has become a key material in the best yachts and on the decks of warships and submarines. FSC® certified Cocobolo Rosewood (Dalbergia Retusa) is one of the most beautifully figured woods in the world. Cocobolo is a true rosewood and has colors as widely diverse as a rainbow. An incredibly figured wood, cocobolo is very hard with brilliant colors and dark black stripes. The wood has beautiful oranges, reds, browns and blacks all swirled together. Cocobolo is world class for making musical instruments. FSC® certified Goncalo Alves/Tigerwood Ebony (Astronium Graveolens) is a very hard, dense and fancy tropical wood with incredible black stripes. The wood has beautiful colors and each board has unique figure. The black stripes can be so numerous that the wood resembles black ebony. Goncalo with a sliver of sapwood shows brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows – along with black stripe—and finishes like a mirror. The diverse colors and bright constrast make Goncalo Alves one of the most sought-after woods in the world. The wood is a great substitute for cocobolo and can be exported without CITES permits. FSC® certified Monkeypod (Pithecolobium Samans) is wonderful for dining tables, bars, shelves, and counters with wide and long slabs that look like figured black walnut. A fine workable wood with terrific properties, monkeypod is often used for furniture with a natural edge or wane. We have lots of slab wood available as well as square cut boards from ¾ to 3 inches thick. Spanish Cedar (Cedrela Odorata) varies in color from pink to red. This wood is usually straight-grained and has natural oil. Light weight but incredibly strong, this durable wood is used in guitars, humidors, fine furniture and crafts. We stock a lot of 1/4 “ thick veneer and quartersawn Spanish cedar for guitar necks. This wood is great for carving. FSC® certified Mahogany (Swietenia Macrophylla) is great for making musical instruments. We sell a lot of quartersawn and figured mahogany. It is very easy to work, even with hand tools. Mahogany is light weight and with world famous working characteristics. Famous for its stability and durability, mahogany also has world class figure—crotch, flame, ribbon, fiddleback, etc. FSC® certified WWW.DIAMONDTROPICALHARDWOODS.COM TEL: 215.257.2556 TEL: 215.453.2196 FAX: 206.289.1008 Page 2 Granadillo (Platymiscium Pinnatum) is a gorgeous wood that looks like rosewood. The wood has great tap tone, straight, tight grain and is very durable. Granadillo has colors from dark red to pink to violet to brown and can have dark stripes and pronounced figured. The wood is used in fine furniture and cabinetry, flooring, musical instruments/drums, billiard cues, pool tables, and turnings. FSC® certified Mango (Mangifera Indica) is the highest figured wood in the world with amazing diversity of color and figure. The superb grain ranges from unique yellow, pink, orange, tan and green streaks and swirls. Some mango slabs have dark chocolate heart. It is very workable, great for fine furniture and crafts, and good for flooring. Mango is very similar to koa but costs 1/10 as much. We have many slabs available as well as square cut lumber from 5/8 to 3 inches thick Yellowheart (Maclura Tinctoria) is an amazingly hard and durable wood with a brilliant, long-lasting color. Ideal for marquetry or detailing in the finest projects, yellowheart holds its color well over time and has terrfic woodworking properties. The wood is known for ribbon figure and has better tap tone than mahogany. This wood is great for accents and designs that require the finest, brightest wood. We have yellowheart that is as bright today as when it was cut 20 years ago. We have a fine woodworking business so we can edge, plane, sand, roundover, and change the shape of wood. This can save time and money on shipping as rough wood is heavier and more bulky than finished wood. S4S = surfaced four sides E2E =eased two edges Quartersawn = vertical grain that makes the wood more stable and is required for the best teak decking, guitar necks, and other uses. We own FSC certified reforestation projects, sawmills, and kilns as well as a fine furniture factory. We make many lines of furniture and wooden products for the best companies such as Martin Guitar, Knoll, Henry Hall Designs, etc. Please call or email [email protected] to check out how we can lower your costs by edging, planing, sanding, shaping, etc. Finished wood costs less to ship! We appreciate your business.
