LIST OF PRIORITY SPECIES Identification of timber species and geographic origin www.globaltimbertrackingnetwork.org December 2013 GTTN List of Priority Species REASONS, CRITERIA AND METHODS USED FOR PRIORITISING SPECIES With more than 800 commercial timber species worldwide, it is necessary to identify priorities for inclusion of species in the project. Priority species lists are needed to locate existing data for immediate use in the database, to identify gaps in knowledge and data for such species, and to raise awareness about species that should be considered in new research. The criteria considered with respect to species identification include: tree species that are difficult to recognize in the field or using wood anatomy, the conservation status (CITES, IUCN, regional and national listing) and the existence of barcodes. For the verification of geographic origin, criteria were the trade importance, management problems (logging intensity, regeneration), the conservation status, the existence of genetic tools and data, the existence of sample collections suitable for genetic and/or isotope fingerprinting, the species distribution and the geographic representation were included. Listing of species was done by participants at different workshops: The GTTN regional workshops for Americas and for Asia, Pacific & Oceania organised by Bioversity International in 2013; Two workshops (Cameroon and Germany) organised during the preparation of the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) project Development and implementation of a species identification and timber tracking system in Africa with DNA fingerprints and stable isotopes. After listing the species, participants at various workshops were also asked to assign different level of priority (Height, Medium and Low) taking into account all criteria listed above. Page 1 GTTN List of Priority Species SPECIES LISTED The global list of high (Table 1), medium (Table 2) and low (Table 3) priority timber species are presented below. Figures 1 to 3 present the number of species listed per continent, the level of priority (high, medium or low), and the conservation status (according to IUCN red list and CITES appendices). The number of species requiring the development of local barcodes is presented in Fig. 4.
