MAMMA MIA HUDSON REVIEWS RISTORANTE BIAGIO, PICCADILLY… Ristorante Biagio,189 Piccadilly, London, W1. t| 020 7287 4218. www.ristorantebiagio.co.uk

Now that Mediterranean cuisine is such a staple of the British diet, and there’s an obligatory pasta dish on the menus of every gastropub, Italian restaurants wanting to stay a cut above their competitors have had to up their game. One such establishment is Ristorante Biagio. Something of an undiscovered gem, you first have to find the place. Although it’s only a couple of minutes’ walk from Piccadilly Circus, just across the road from the Royal Academy, due to its narrow and unassuming exterior, it looks like a stylish yet unremarkable little Italian café with a dining area at the back. However, this is but a small glimpse of what’s truly on offer. Biagio is actually set over four floors, with a cocktail lounge in the basement, a café and bar on the ground floor, the main restaurant on the first floor, and a second, more intimate restaurant on the top floor. Such a layout allows for great versatility, and the building’s various rooms are unsurprisingly popular for private hire. Biagio Restaurant Group actually owns six establishments, but 189 Piccadilly is clearly its flagship branch, and the one upon which the owners have recently lavished a complete refurbishment. It’s now modern and contemporary, but not to the point of intimidation. There’s wood flooring and brickwork, coupled with red and cream walls and large photographic food murals. The first floor restaurant has a wall completely made up of wine bottles (on display behind glass), with padded banquets for small groups, and Perspex seating and big red cushions on the other half of the room. It’s a mixture, but it works, as does the food, which was a reasonably priced and imaginative selection of dishes inspired by the Liguria region of northern Italy. I started with a sautéed squid salad (£7.95), which came served on a chickpea fondant and rocket leaves. The crisp squid was well complemented by the more-ish and smoky chickpea mash. My companion tried the scallops in saffron dressing (£11), which she also thought perfectly cooked and suitably unfussy. She followed it with Panzerotti di Pesce (£10.50), which was homemade fresh pasta filled with fish of the day (we were in a seafood mood!), while on the waiter’s recommendation, I had homemade spaghetti with sea bream: al dente pasta, a light but chunky tomato sauce, and generous big chunks of sea bream. It was sublime, and easily the best pasta dish I’ve had this year. For those not so fond of fish, there are plenty of meaty options, including rabbit, rack of lamb, and sliced beef fillet with balsamic dressing. We left just enough room for some dessert, quickly polishing off the crème brulée and a slice of chocolate gateaux. Biagio is definitely a cut above other Italian restaurants in the West End, and competitors would be wise to take note of how it effortlessly ticks all the correct boxes.

We’ve always liked the premises at 4-5 Greek Street. Just off Soho Square, there’s always been something interesting about the place – even when it was the straight haunt Red, back at the turn of the decade. Of course, after that it became the short-lived Shadow Lounge rival Sanctuary, and then Element, neither of which really established big followings and quickly disappeared. However, new promoters have now taken over, and there’s no mistaking that this is aimed very squarely at Soho’s large gay fan base. The name the Green Carnation is in honour of Oscar Wilde, who famously wore the unusual bloom in his buttonhole. The publicity material states that the infamous playwright and writer inspired the venue, and that the team “take pride in bringing back a highbrow establishment, which will be inclusive to all of Soho’s angels.” Well, plenty of angels, devils and everything in-between turned up for the glamorous launch party at the end of August. Hosted by Aubrey Dobson, of Salon fame, the launch attracted a crowd curious to fi nd out what the new venue had to off er. The answer? Sophisticated, stylish and slightly bohemian surroundings, with ornate wallpaper and gilt-edged fl ourishes of design. It’s a little bit camp, but strangely naughty and seductive at the same time. “The launch was Wilde!” Aubrey told us afterwards. “We did have a queue, and I don’t like to see people queuing, so apologies about that, but we were at capacity. My highlight was dancing with Molly Parkin!” Regular events planned for the Green Carnation include Miss Kimberley’s Lounge Aff air each Monday, Minty’s new Pin-Up night downstairs with Paul Heron on Thursdays, and Tris Penna’s ‘Wilde Ones’ session upstairs on Fridays. Tallulah will spin the sounds on Saturdays, while Aubrey himself will preside over Sunday tea and cakes – costing £25 for two, you’ll be treated to tea, Champagne and a range of delicious cakes and scones. Now that is something a bit diff erent for Soho!

The Yard has always been one of those bars that doesn’t seem to try too hard. That’s not to deny the huge amount of work that the management and staff clearly put into the venue, but whereas other establishments might pop up more regularly in the gay press, or make more claims about their appeal, The Yard has quietly been going about its business for the last decade, eff ortlessly pulling in the punters with little fuss or commotion. Situated on Rupert Street, The Yard is now something of a W1 institution. It’s simply a two-fl oor bar with a sizeable courtyard area, and, in the middle of the West End, where outside space is at a premium, that has always made it stand out from the crowd. It’s the perfect destination in the summer, and even in the winter, when the staff pull over the plastic covers and spark up the outdoor heaters, it has an atmosphere quite unlike any other Soho haunt. There’s also the upstairs Loft Bar, which with its exposed wooden beams and unpretentious attitude, is itself a destination for the more discerning drinker. The entire venue was guaranteed to be packed out for Soho Pride, but that didn’t mean that its team didn’t go to lengths to deliver a memorable diversion from all the other events of the day. Despite the grey and damp weather, the Yard itself turned itself distinctly tropical with a Beach Party. The sun may not have shone, but there was plenty of beach towels, balls and scantily clad bar boys in trunks to bring a taste of Ibiza to the cobbles of Rupert Street. Besides the occasional parties, you’ll fi nd DJ Small Sam spinning tunes every weekend at the venue, as well as regular promotions. Don’t be surprised if you fi nd a queue to get in to the place after 9pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

Perfectly situated between the Cutty Sark and the Park, the Powder Monkey is a beautifully designed contemporary bar/club/lounge in the heart of historic Greenwich. Built in the late 1700’s, and formerly the Cricketers Public House, each fl oor has been individually re-designed by TV makeover star Llewelyn-Bowen and Associates and given their own identity. Entering through the double doors on the ground fl oor brings you in to the main bar which is decorated with bespoke hand drawn wallpaper showing scenes of Greenwich’s architecture, red leather banquettes and plush velvet stools. In this vibrant and colourful bar, happy hour is between 5 and 8pm everyday and the music comes courtesy of a video jukebox. Moving to the rear and one staircase takes you down to the toilets whilst the other takes you upstairs to the dancefl oor with its silver and black refl ective wallpaper, hi-tec DJ booth and another bar. On Saturday when we visited, plate spinner Ian James was pumping out the best hands-in-the-air house mixes and club anthems that kept a packed fl oor moving and shaking. Just when we thought we’d discovered all the secrets of the Powder Monkey, another staircase led us up to the über plush Lounge Bar on the second fl oor. With its rich aubergine-coloured walls and artwork, this fl oor has the feel of a VIP lounge but without the red rope to negotiate. The music is chilled and relaxing, the atmosphere cool, and there is yet another bar serving an extensive cocktail list as well as a huge array of spirits, liqueurs and aperitifs. The crowd on all fl oors is predominantly young and trendy, and manager Fred and his team have done a great job in creating and maintaining a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. With its close proximity to Greenwich University, student sessions Popsicle on a Monday is sure to be a huge hit. Then there’s Drew’s X-Factor karaoke on a Tuesday, Fever on a Friday and the Tea Dance with DJ Small Sam on a Sunday – the phrase ‘something for everyone’ is often overused, but for the Powder Monkey it’s perfect.

Following its successful launch over the May Bank Holiday, Fusion returned to the XXL arches on the Sunday night of the August bank holiday. The night boasts a slightly diff erent vibe to the main XXL Saturday night outing, and although we spotted plenty of the chunkier guys and bears that love this venue, the crowd was much more diverse – from Vauxhall regulars and pop kids to Hoxton whores and even a handful of decadent dykes. It’s been a while since we last got down to the arches, but the venue just seems to be getting better and better. The fi rst arch bar was decked out with muslin drapes and rope lights that rotate through the colours of the spectrum, bathing the room from blood red to cool blue. The second fl oor arch is the main dancefl oor, and it was probably the busiest room of the evening, being packed with sweaty, topless bodies, worshipping before the elevated DJ booth. Resident XXL Christian M took care of the tunes, supported by special guests Soul Avengerz, who spun out several of their own remixes in a typically uplifting set, and Paul Emanuel, who played a slightly harder and more experimental set. So popular was the main dancefl oor that the D:Fused electro arch struggled to compete, whereas there were plenty more punters to be found in the fourth arch, which had been transformed for the night into the Hefty Hideaway. Glittery stars hung from the ceiling, while John Waters’ classic fi lm Hairspray played on the big screen, adding a camp note to the evening. As it was such a mild evening, both outdoor areas proved hugely popular – with smokers and non-smokers alike. At the time of going to press, there was no word when Fusion might return, but keep an eye on the press or the XXL website (www.xxl-london.com) for further details.

NEWLON IS HOUSING ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR

Newlon Housing Trust was awarded the title of Housing Association of the Year as part of the prestigious Regeneration and Renewal Awards at a ceremony in South West London in September. Beating off competition from seven other shortlisted Housing Associations the judges were impressed by the Trust’s work in the Arsenal Regeneration Programme where more than 1,000 new homes have been completed since Autumn 2005 and the range of its work to support residents and the regeneration of communities across north and east London. Chief Executive Mike Hinch commented: “I am really proud that our achievements in the last year have been recognised in this way. We have been working really hard to help meet the demand for new aff ordable housing in north and east London. This is a testament to the hard work of all our staff and the many partners that we work with to provide people with decent homes and help support them to live successful lives.”
