De kommer att förvandla allt till ett brinnande, men vackert, inferno. The New Christ bildades 1984 av Rob Younger från legendariska bandet Radio Birdman, en av t.ex. The Hellacopters stora inspirationskällor. Det är inte vem som helst som ligger bakom att New Christ bildades, det började med att Iggy Pop behövde ett öppningsband på sin Australienturné, och frågade Mr Younger om han kunde sätta ihop något. Med hjälp av medlemmar från bland andra Lime Spiders och Radio Birdman bildade han så The New Christ. Turnén blev succé och bandet äntrade studion för att spela in de två singlarna ”Like A Curse” och ”Born Out Of Time”. Men fullängdaren tog tid på sig, först 1989 kom ”Distemper”, bandets biljett till Europa. På nittiotalet turnerade The New Christ i Australien tillsammans med band som Ramones, och i samma årtionde spelade Bill Gibson från Lemonheads gitarr i bandet. Nu är The New Christs tillbaka. The sounds of ideas forming , Volume 3 Alan Dunn, 22 July 2020 presents precious but not precious UP-RE-CYCLING This is the recycle tip at Clatterbridge. In February 2020, we’re dropping off some stuff when Brigitte shouts “if you get to the plastic section sharpish, someone’s throwing out a pile of records.” I leg it round and within seconds, eyes and brain honed from years in dank backrooms and charity shops, I smell good stuff. I lean inside, grabbing a pile of vinyl and sticking it up my top. There’s compilations with Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Devo and a couple of odd 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters soundtracks. This story is about vinyl but not as a precious and passive hands-off medium but about using it to generate and form ideas, abusing it to paginate a digital sketchbook and continuing to be astonished by its magic. We re-enter the story, the story of the sounds of ideas forming, after the COVER (VERSIONS) exhibition in collaboration with Aidan Winterburn that brings together the ideas from July 2018 – December 2019. Staged at Leeds Beckett University, it presents the greatest hits of the first 18 months and some extracts from that first text that Aidan responds to (https://tinyurl.com/y4tza6jq), with me in turn responding back, via some ‘OUR PRICE’ style stickers with quotes/stats. For the exhibition, the mock-up sleeves fabricated by Tom Rodgers look stunning, turning the digital detournements into believable double-sided artefacts.

Det har varit en intressant och turbulent resa för The New Christ sedan de bilades 1984 av legendariska Radio Birdman's frontfigur Rob Younger i samband med att de skulle agera support åt Iggy Pop under hans Australiska turné. Framgången inleddes med ett antal singel utgåvor och därefter följde flera medlemsbyten, först 1989 släpptes deras debutalbum ‘Distemper'. Efter en avslutad succé fylld Europa turné splittrades bandet men återbilades 1990, denna gång för att supporta The Ramones. Ännu en gång tog bandet ett uppehåll, denna gång varade det i tre år innan Rob återtog samarbetet med Christian Houllemare (Happy Hate Me Nots) och Bill Gibson (Lemonheads, Eastern Dark) för att spela in ‘The Pedestal' och ‘Woe Betide'. Albumet 'Lower Yourself' kom ut 1997 och nästa tänkta utgåva 'We Got This' tog sin form i början av 2001. Diverse skivbolagsbekymmer bidrog till att produktionen drog ut på tiden och när det var dags för release hade bandet återigen gått skilda vägar. Efter att Rob tillbringat ett par år med att producera andra band och turnera med det pånyttfödda Radio Birdman bildade han under 2006 den nuvarande versionen av The New Christs. Tidigare basisten Jim Dickson återvände, Stu Wilson (trummor), Dave Kettley (gitarr) och Brent Williams (gitarr) tillkom och den nya sammansättningen har kommit att bli den mest stabila konstellationen. THE NEW CHRISTS har under åren förvärvat sig en kultstämpel, bland både publik, recensenter men även hos andra musiker och de efterfrågas runt om i Europa av hyllande fans.

THE NEW CHRISTS “GLORIA” Twenty five years after they first formed and more than five years since the release of their last studio album, The New Christs deliver their brand new album ‘Gloria’. It has been an interesting journey since Radio Birdman front man Rob Younger formed The New Christs in 1984 to support Iggy Pop on his Australian tour of that year. A number of single releases featuring several line ups of friends followed before the band recorded and released their debut album ‘Distemper’ in 1989. Following the European tour in support of the album release, the band split up before briefly reforming in 1990 to support The Ramones on their Australian tour. Once again after that tour the band took a three year hiatus before Rob teamed up with bassist Christian Houllemare (Happy Hate Me Nots) and Bill Gibson (Lemonheads, KEY SELLING POINTS Eastern Dark) to record ‘The Pedestal’ ep and ‘Woe Betide’ mini-album. This was then followed by the 1997 release of * Regular tours in Europe, tour for this album the album ‘Lower Yourself’ which the band once again takes in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, toured Europe on the back of. Sweden, Norway and UK. In 2001, The New Christs recorded their full length album * Features former Radio Birdman front man Rob ‘We Got This’ but due to problems with the label who had Younger, an inductee into the Australian Music initially commissioned the recording, it would be some time Hall of Fame. before it was finally released and by that time due to various reasons the band had once again split.

It has meant different things at different historical moments of popular music and within academic, music press and industry discourses. Even though what independent music refers to might not be substantive, it has tended to signify an oppositional ethos comprising practices related to maintaining distinction from commercialised popular music. Historical narratives of popular music reveal that independent music or indie, has been defined and re-defined, from signifying an ethos of resistance comprising anti-major record label and anti- corporatisation attitudes, to rubrics of sound aesthetics, marketing categories and niche audience segments. Its different connotations then should not be assumed. Comprehension of different dimensions of independent music call for theorisation of youth, rebellion, alternative cultures, and their connections with musical forms, along with production and distribution-related organisational infrastructures revolving around them.
