Wednesday, April 11, 7.30pm. The Basement @ The Builders Club. SOL presents The Bearded Gypsy Band + The Penny's

Recently at 'WOMADElaide' The Bearded Gypsy Band played an "astonishingly vituoso set for an ecstatic crowd. Their prodigious skills produced a finessed performance that musicians with fifty years experience could well envy."

The Bearded Gypsy Band play an eclectic mix of energetic Gypsy Folk, Celtic & Gypsy Jazz music. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Django Reinhardt and other folk music from around the world, their original music takes the listener on explorative journeys with varying energies, styles and rhythms, from singular spiritual moments to full-body engaged collective ‘anthemic’ music. Seeing this band live really brings their infectious music to life as their incredible musicianship is experienced. They have been described by musician David Ross McDonald as “The Too Young for Their Talent Band”. http://www.myspace.com/beardedgypsyband http://beardedgypsyband.net/

For the past few years The Pennys have been performing their uniquely upbeat blend of Indie Folk & Catchy Rock to audiences up and down the Australian East Coast. Born out of an impromptu jam at a local politician's fondue party, they quickly discovered a mutual love for Sing-a-long Choruses, Hawaiian Shirts and Jauntiness, deciding then and there that they would combine all three and form a collective.

"The Penny's make music that is charming and heartfelt, always wistful and always a charm" ....David Young

"Boasting the sounds of double bass, harmonica, keys, percussion and both acoustic and electric guitar, the musicianship displayed by this band is very strong with a strong stage show to boot." - Wollongong UniBar Band Comp http://www.reverbnation.com/thepennys http://www.myspace.com/thepennys

The Wollongong Culture Bank - Creating and Caretaking

Summary:

Wollongong Culture Bank would fuel a fire to help create a vital cultural life in this place we live. It would inspire the imagination of our community and galvanize our creativity.

The Wollongong Culture Bank would offer any members of the community a chance to become cultural philanthropists and to be caretakers of the region’s cultural heart beat.

The idea is simple; the intention simplicity.

The Cost:

Those who are interested in being caretakers/ philanthropists and becoming a Member would commit to a monthly payment of a minimum of AUS$10.00. Contributions could be online (or by telephone and post). This would be paid into an account held by a local Not for Profit organization. Port Kembla Community Project (PKCP) has offered to host the site (in its start-up) and can provide tax deductible receipting. There would be a 2% fee deducted by PKCP to cover financial administration. When Wollongong Culture Bank is up and running PKCP could look at taking an increased percentage to cover the costs of a permanent part-time administrator.

The money raised would be used to pay for the cultural projects including marketing, production, post-production and so on, to the artists, performers, writers, storytellers, designers, filmmakers etc...

How to be a Creator:

Expressions of interest will be widely sought by the Wollongong Culture Bank from artists, originators, festivals or community event organizers. Expressions of interest would be presented according to the idea or project not according to track record, age, gender, name, race, or location.

Ideas or projects would take place on a monthly basis anywhere in the Greater Wollongong area, including the southern suburbs and Port Kembla, as well as the Northern suburbs. The location would be the responsibility of the Creator.

A Steering Committee would be established from the membership to oversee the development of the Wollongong Culture Bank. This steering committee may rotate annually. Student and Youth Membership would be represented on this committee.

Members of the Wollongong Culture Bank could nominate to be Active or Passive contributors.

An Active Member would participate in the processing of expressions of interest and the allocation of the funds. This would be done via a random group of 9 different people, all Active Members, who would be randomly selected each month to decide what should be funded. This could happen at a meeting, or over dinner (Decision Dinners). A member of the Steering Committee would be present to clarify process and confirm the decision. This could be a different member each month. Availability for the Decision Dinners would need to be provided in advance.

Passive Members would contribute financially only.

The Project or Idea:

The decision of the group would be communicated to the list of Creators and also to the Administrator of the Wollongong Culture Bank via the Steering Committee member.

In acknowledgment of the funding, those who are granted funds would be required to acknowledge the funding to the membership through an invitation to the event. The event would be accessible to all members of the Greater Wollongong area.

The basic governing principle of the initiative and process is to keep it as simple and fluid as possible. (suggested values could be trust, respect, equality, equanimity, leadership without power and power without force).

Anyone who is interested in becoming (an Active or Passive Member) can email Jenny on [email protected] with an indication of the skill they have to offer in the start-up.

Please feel free to pass on this information.

Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls says, “The London Klezmer Quartet brims with musicality and elicits every emotion possible in my soul… I want to laugh, I want to cry, but most importantly I want to dance!”

As innovators and emerging leaders in the international klezmer scene their deep understanding of this celebratory and soulful music is reflected in exuberant, passionate, and accomplished performances. Their recent recording is described as “a stylish debut from four highly accomplished and in-demand musicians creating moments of genuine storm” (fRoots Magazine).

The band’s traditional sound evokes a fervour and joy reminiscent of the Jewish minstrels who kept people dancing, crying and laughing in the ‘shtetls’ of eastern Europe for hundreds of years, where they were the essential ingredient at every wedding celebration.

This all-female band formed in 2009 as the much-anticipated collaboration of “Europe's most talented klezmer musicians” (Frank London, Klezmatics). They have been picked up by the UK’s foremost folk & world music promoters (Songlines Magazine, Continental Drifts, The Magpie’s Nest) playing venues great and small and swiftly becoming festival favourites. Band members are also in demand on other world music stages, recording & touring with The Indigo Girls (US), Sinead O’Connor (Ireland), Natacha Atlas (Egypt), She’Koyokh (UK), Abdel Ali Slimani (Algeria), and Ahmed Mukhtar (Iraq), playing festivals around the world.

Described as “fabulous, professional and a joy to watch and listen to” (UK Jewish Music Institute), their music as “exquisite” (radio Sefarad), their debut album has won acclaim from klezmer musicians around the world. Stewart Curtis (K-Groove, UK) hailed it as “truly great authentic klezmer” and Stuart Brotman (Brave Old World & Veretski Pass, US) authenticated their “very intimate sound”, whilst fRoots Magazine say “it is a tremendous calling card for their increasingly acclaimed live performances.”

On their first Australian tour they will be performing in Wollongong, Sydney, Newcastle and Melbourne finishing at the National Folk Festival in Canberra.

Much in demand also as educators Ilana’s definitive guide to playing klezmer commissioned by Oxford University press is “the best exposition I’ve come across of Eastern European-style Jewish fiddle playing…Highly recommended.” fRoots Magazine. Now it is your chance to learn from these talented musicians at the workshop at Wollongong’s Conservatorium of Music. Contact the office there to secure your place.

Delia Fetter - Playwright

Delia Fetter was born in Canberra in 1975. An early childhood during which books were bountiful but TV severely rationed led her towards reading and prioritizing any TV time to BBC comedies. Writing from an early age, her first publication came at the age of 10 with a poem ‘My Bedroom Transformed’ being printed in Canberra’s Muse magazine. She subsequently went on to receive various local awards for both prose and poetry, but her ongoing study of Drama throughout High School produced a storytelling style which was peppered with quotation marks and script-like dialogue.

This ongoing fascination with Theatre evolved into a vocation when her first play, the one-act ‘Hypothalamania’ won the STC/ICI Young Playwrights’ competition in 1993. Australian Theatre for Young People held the rights to the play from 1994-96, with numerous spectacular performances from The Wharf to Byron Bay to Hertfordshire in the U.K. The play was published by Five Islands Press in 1998. Commissions, grants and workshops over the next few years allowed Delia to experiment with her medium and create the subsequent works “What Are Youse All Looking At?” (For the International Year of Indigenous Peoples), “Wings” (for the International Year of Older Persons), “Water Over the Bridge” and “Tiger and the Howling”, which was placed in the top 50 entries in the 2001 Patrick White award. Delia has been extensively involved in all aspects of theatrical production, as well as giving yearly guest lectures in script writing at the University of Wollongong.

pBONE TO UPSTAGE JAMES MORRISON As part of The Con Concert Series, Wollongong Conservatorium of Music is presenting four community-focused concerts this year at Wollongong Town Hall. The first in this series, 7pm on Friday 30 March, is the Jazz Showcase featuring James Morrison and the Megaband. James Morrison, who will be performing as guest soloist with the Con’s Jazz Orchestra, will also cameo with this year’s Megaband; 100 of the Illawarra’s best school musicians joining forces to create one of the biggest sounds around. One of the ‘kids’ in this year’s Megaband is well-known local radio celebrity Nick Rheinberger. While discussing the Jazz Showcase on air during his fortnightly music appreciation session with Andrew Snell, CEO of the Con, Nick declared his longing to play trombone alongside James and the kids in this year’s Jammin’ with James and the Megaband. Since that fateful day, Nick has been receiving lessons from Andrew on the new pBone…the most exciting thing to happen to the world of music since some smart dude decided to rename the sakbutt! The pBone is light-weight, much harder to damage than a regular trombone and about a quarter of the cost of a student instrument…making it a much more accessible option for the would-be trombonist out there. It sounds good too, comes in a range of colour combinations, and is the hottest thing around. So, standing tall…six foot two inches…on stage with the best of the best sporting a bright red pBone, Nick will realise his dream on Friday 30 March as he gets down and dirty with the kids and James in Jammin’ with James.

CAPTION: (L-R) Nick Rheinberger, Eric Dunan (Director of Jazz at the Con) and Andrew Snell (CEO at the Con) with red, green and yellow pBones.

In celebration of this amazing achievement there are 40 concerts to celebrate each of these 40 fabulous years in the community: 4 concerts in The Con Concert Series at the Wollongong Town Hall 12 concerts in the 2012 Chamber Music Series at various local venues 12 concerts in the 2012 Jazz Series at various local venues 12 concerts in The Con Performance Series held predominantly at Gleniffer Brae

With four concerts already successfully completed the next few months are packed with excitement and intrigue. By far the biggest event is the first concert in The Con Concert Series, the Jazz Showcase featuring James Morrison and the Megaband, 7pm on Friday 30 March at Wollongong Town Hall. The Con’s Jazz Orchestra, all set for their USA tour in April, will perform a selection of their program for this years’ Reno Jazz Festival with James Morrison performing as guest soloist.

The 2012 Chamber Music Series has a number of concerts over the next few months:

The internationally renowned London Klezmer Quartet perform on Thursday 29 March at the Con’s Auditorium, Gleniffer Brae. Klezmer, the celebratory and soulful music of Eastern European Jews, is reflected in this passionate performance that will captivate and move you from dance to tears and back again.

ACO2, the regional touring and educational arm of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), perform on Tuesday 3 April at Wollongong City Gallery. Combining Australia’s best young string players with stars from the ACO, ACO2 deliver a fresh, energetic performance which will leave you wanting more.

Mara! & The Martenitsa Choir perform on Saturday 21 April at IPAC. Blending the unique musical style of Mara! with the magnificence of the Bulgarian state choir modelled Martenitsa Choir, this is a song cycle setting the exquisitely sensitive and very personal poetry of Italian lawyer and freedom fighter, the late Eduardo Di Giovanni Jr. Experience and explore the themes of love, loss, family and friendship.

Bobby Singh and Vinod Prasanna perform on Saturday 5 May at Thirroul Community Centre. With the rich tradition of bansuri (flute), Vinod’s music plays homage to ancient and contemporary Indian music. Combined effortlessly with the tabla (drums) of Bobby, a disciple of the great Aneesh Pradham, this performance will inspire and lift you.

Performing as part of the 2012 Jazz Series the Darren Sigesmund Strands Project, featuring Australia’s renowned guitar virtuoso James Muller, will perform cutting edge jazz in an intimate setting on Friday 25 May at the Con’s Auditorium, Gleniffer Brae. As part of the 2012 Jazz Series the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra will be back performing in Wollongong with an international megastar from the USA jazz scene. Watch out for more information on this, once the embargo lifts mid-March.
