Summary

The Manod Bach – Y Garnedd uplands archaeological survey was undertaken in the autumn and winter of 2013-14. It comprises approximately 14.5 square kilometres of mostly unenclosed common land to the east of Llan Ffestiniog and Blaenau Ffestiniog, and lies mainly within Snowdonia National Park. The landscape falls mostly within the 250 metre and 650 metre contours and comprises open heather moorland, with steep-sided valleys of grassland and mire. Much of the terrain is rock-strewn. The survey was conducted by walking regular 30-metre transects and aimed to identify sites of all periods. A total of 1,014 sites was recorded, 17 of which had been recorded previously in the National Monuments Record.

Significant Iron Age industry and settlement lies in the valley of the Gamallt river, close to the line of a Roman road between Tomen y mur and Canovium forts. At Bryn y Castell, iron smelting took place intermittently from 50BC to the third century AD. A large farmstead was found nearby, comprising hut circles and enclosures, either defined by walls or terraces cleared of field stone. Isolated Iron Age hut circles were also identified across the survey area. Medieval settlement, in the form of long huts, is also well represented in many of the sheltered valley locations.

Human impact on the landscape was greatest in the nineteenth century, largely the result of extractive industries. There are small slate quarries near Llan Ffestiniog that belong to a period when slate was exploited as a local building material, but most of the archaeology of the slate industry belongs to the massive expansion of output for the export market in the nineteenth century. This takes the form of large open quarries or underground workings entered by levels, with attendant processing buildings, spoil heaps, and transport networks, including some well-preserved inclined planes.

Other industries include lead mining, which occurred in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, albeit on a small scale, but nevertheless leaving much archaeological evidence in the form of adits, spoil tips and small prospecting trenches. Dolerite was quarried from the west flank of Manod Bach in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Contemporary with its industrial exploitation, the landscape was also developed for recreational purposes. Numerous lakes within the survey area were stocked with fish, and there is plenty of associated archaeology in the form of fishermen’s shelters and boat houses, while the moors are peppered with shooting stands for grouse shooting.

The report concludes with recommendations for future recording and research.

1.0 Introduction

The Manod Bach – Y Garnedd uplands archaeology survey is an area in Snowdonia approximately 14.5 square kilometres on the east side of Llan Ffestiniog and Blaenau Ffestiniog (fig 1). The landscape is primarily unenclosed common land. It comprises the moorland of Y Garnedd, land northward to Y Gamallt and approaching Moel Marchyria, the east side of the survey area defined by the B4407 and a minor road. Further south it extends beyond the valley of Afon Cynfal to Hafod Fawr Forest. On the west side it encompasses the deep valley of Cwm Teigl and extends to Manod Mawr and Manod Bach on the edge of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The area incorporates freshwater lakes, including the two Llynnau Gamallt, two by the name of Llyn Dubach, Llyn y Drum, Llyn y Manod, and Llyn Morwynion, the latter now a reservoir. Altitude ranges from 200 metres AOD on the edge of Llan Ffestiniog, to 552 metres at the summit of y Garnedd and 661 metres at the summit of Manod Mawr.

The survey falls within the Ffestiniog, Bro Machno and Maentwrog Communities of Gwynedd and Conwy. The survey area on the east side of Afon Gamallt is part of the Migneint-Arenig-Dduallt Special Protection Area on account of its ornithological interest, especially as a breeding ground for hen harrier, peregrine and merlin, and belongs to the Migneint-Arenig-Dduallt Special Area of Conservation on account of its blanket bog, heathland and lakes. For a combination of these reasons it is also designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Most of the survey area is within the Snowdonia National Park, the north-west part excepted, and almost all of it is designated Access Land.

There has been significant previous archaeological work within the survey area. It incorporates the Gamallt Estate of the National Trust, where a field survey was undertaken in the 1980s (Latham 1984). Bryn y Castell hillfort also lies within the survey area. The site was excavated between 1979 and 1985 (Crew 1986), and subsequently, an environmental study was undertaken using peat cores taken from near the site (Mighall and Chambers 1997).

The field survey was undertaken between October 2013 and March 2014 by Richard Hayman and Wendy Horton, with grant in aid from RCAHM Wales under the Uplands Archaeology Initiative.

2.0 Methodology

The project aimed to identify and record the resource through rapid, systematic field survey. Archaeological remains of all periods were considered equally. RCAHM Wales undertook aerial photograph mapping of the area, which was consulted through the fieldwork phase. The regional Historic Environment Record (HER) was consulted prior to the fieldwork, which yielded records of 44 sites. RCAHM Wales provided digital copies of the county-series Ordnance Survey maps at 6-inch scale. Tithe surveys and the first edition of the Ordnance Survey were also consulted during the desk-top phase, but a search did not reveal any useful estate maps covering the area.

The area was divided into transects 30 metres apart, except in areas above 500 metres where archaeological sites were sparse. These were divided into 50-metre transects. The location (NGR) and altitude of each site was established by a hand- held Global Positioning System receiver (GPS). Written descriptions, including approximate dimensions, were made in the field and photographs were taken of all important sites and when conditions were favourable. The information for each site is entered into the National Monuments Record for Wales (NMR), each with its own unique identifying number, or National Primary Reference Number (nprn).

3.0 Results of survey

The survey identified 1,014 archaeological sites, giving a site density of 70 per square kilometre, a relatively high figure for the uplands of Snowdonia. The distribution of sites by altitude, period and Broad Class is given in tables 1-3. The distribution of sites across the survey area is shown in maps 1-3, with detail maps showing the distribution of sites in more concentrated areas in maps 4-6. With the exception of the very small areas in the highest and lowest contour bands, site density is generally higher below 400 metres, as would be expected. Variation within this is influenced by geology, topography and vegetation. Relatively few sites were recorded above 450 metres under the Broad Classes of Agriculture and Subsistence and Domestic. Industrial sites, however, are determined more by geology than by altitude. Slate, for example, was quarried from the north side of Manod Mawr at over 500 metres altitude, giving rise to numerous sites in the form of quarries and tips.

Post-medieval sites account for 77 per cent of the total number of sites, and most of the 411 industrial sites also belong to that period. By contrast, domestic sites are generally earlier, notwithstanding the fact that it is not always possible to distinguish between medieval and post-medieval long huts. Of the 61 domestic sites, 27 are Iron Age hut circles, contemporary with which are 11 associated sites, mainly enclosures and walls, commonly at altitudes around 350-400m. Most of the other sites under the Broad Class of Agriculture and Subsistence are post-medieval sheepfolds, shelters, field walls and peat stacks. In addition to the 411 Industrial sites, there are sites under the Broad Classes of Transport and Water Supply and Drainage that are also associated with industry. There are 24 sites of reservoirs, dams and watercourses supplying water to mines and quarries, and of sites under Transport, 28 are tramways or inclined planes and a further nine are tracks created specifically for access to quarries and mines.

3.1 Bronze Age sites

A Bronze Age cairn was discovered at the summit of Y Garnedd (nprn 536761). It measures 12 metres diameter and has a pronounced kerb in part of its circumference. The ring of stones is built around the rocky summit and there is a slight depression in the centre, which might once have contained a burial, later robbed out. However, the site was clearly chosen as a vantage point, with panoramic views inland and towards the coast.

3.2 Iron Age sites

Iron Age sites are concentrated in the valley of Afon Gamallt. Bryn y Castell hillfort (nprn 95456) was the site of ironworking activity in two phases, from approximately 100BC to AD70 and again from AD150-250 (fig 2). Bog iron ores are known to occur within podsolised and peaty soils, and the source of the ore that was exploited at Bryn y Castell was found to the north east, in the valley of Afon Gamallt. It is a hilltop site with defensive rampart around its steep-sided summit, part of which has been reconstructed following excavation (Crew 1986). To the north east of the main enclosure is a later structure, in the form of a large hut circle (nprn 537052), in which evidence of iron smelting and smithing was found.

Settlement sites are located further up the Gamallt valley. The largest of these is the settlement (nprn 96519) in the sheltered valley below Sarn Helen, which was recorded in the 1980s (Latham 1984). The settlement is extensive and well- preserved. It comprises hut circles (nprn 536627, 536628, 536663, 536666, 536667, 536669, 536672), cleared terraces (nprn 536661, 536662, 536664, 536665), and walled enclosures defined by their surviving footings (nprn 536668, 536670, 536671, 536673) (fig 3). There are other hut circles close by (nprn 536674, 536682, 536683,

536706) on the same side of the valley, that appear to have been related to the main settlement (fig 4). Two of them have attached sub-rectangular structures.

Another group of huts further up the valley is perhaps a different settlement (nprn 303058). It comprises two hut circles (nprn 536618, 536620), one of which has a sub-rectangular annex, and a sub-rectangular structure (nprn 536619), which suggests a date in the range AD150-600 (RCAHMW 1964, lxxxviii, xcii-xcv) (fig 5). Other hut circles were discovered in the survey area, but in isolation. For example, three dispersed hut circles were found near on the hillside near Pont yr Afon Gam (nprn 536559, 536562, 537016), but over 500m apart.

3.3 Sarn Helen

A well-preserved section of Sarn Helen crosses the survey area (nprn 400559). This is the Roman military road that linked Tomen y Mur and Canovium forts. In several sections the line of the road, if not the original road surface, is well-preserved, in the form of a terrace in the hillside, or embanked with stone walls. In places, there is a build-up of peat over the road 0.5 metres high. Three small roadside quarries were identified that were exploited to build the embankments, but where the road crosses the high ground between Afon Gamallt and Cwm Teigl, there was probably

enough field stone available to avoid the necessity of much quarrying. The road fords Afon Gamallt at Rhyd yr Helen, but no evidence was found for paving of the river crossing. Sarn Helen remained an important route over the mountains until the nineteenth century, when quarrying further north at Rhiw-bach, and the establishment of the quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog further west, may have made it less convenient than other routes. The extant road surface is therefore later than the Roman period, although one section of road was bypassed by a new route just south of Rhyd yr Helen, and is the most likely section to preserve the original surface (fig 6).

3.4 Beddau Gwyr Ardudwy

Close to Sarn Helen was once a cluster of mounds, known traditionally as Beddau Gwyr Ardudwy (graves of the men of Ardudwy) and assigned to the early-medieval period. These were noted by Edward Lhuyd in the seventeenth century, who observed that there were at least 30 graves defined by kerb stones. One of these stones was said to bear an inscription and was one of many stones taken from the site to repair the churchyard wall in Llan Ffestiniog (RCAHMW 1921, 25-8). Richard Fenton visited the site in 1813 and thought that the graves were prehistoric cairns plundered to make the Roman road. The remains were interpreted by him as kerbs of cairns with upright stones marking the cists (Fenton 1917, 124). Most of the stones had gone by 1851 and the mounds had largely disappeared by 1870 (RCAHMW 1921, 28). Some remains are still visible, but excavation of one of the mounds concluded that it was a peat stack (Longley 1989) (nprn 303044). An early- medieval stone in Penmachno church, known as the Cantiorix Stone, is said to have come from here and a replica of the stone was set up at the site in 2006.

3.5 Medieval and post-medieval settlement

Settlement of the uplands continued into the medieval period. Thirty-three long huts were discovered. Where they have associated small enclosures (24 of which were discovered that are earlier than the post-medieval period), or have rounded ends, they have been interpreted as medieval with some confidence. If they can be interpreted as hafotai of existing farms, or have fireplaces or surviving gables, they have been interpreted as post-medieval. Otherwise, the period ascribed to these sites is more speculative than for other classes of site. In this survey they are divided 21 medieval, 12 post-medieval.

Settlement generally occupies positions in sheltered valleys. Two medieval settlements were found to the south of Llyn y Manod, in the U-shaped valley between Manod Mawr and Manod Bach. In both cases there were long huts and evidence of associated enclosures (nprn 537202, 537203, 537375) (figs 7, 8).

In Cwm Teigl, the sites of four former dwellings were identified on the valley floor. In none of them was a fireplace apparent, and so they are dated earlier than the nineteenth century. Three of them survive only as footings near the valley floor, but were constructed on levelled sites (nprn 536888, 536900, 536901) (fig 9). Two of them may be medieval in origin (nprn 536900, 536901) as they stand close together in the seemingly haphazard arrangement of medieval farmsteads studied elsewhere in the region (Smith and Thompson 2006). A fourth site was a two-unit dwelling (nprn 536891), which was later converted to a sheepfold by adding three small cells to it,

making a complex plan, but one where the original building is still easily discernible. Close to it is a narrow structure built into the ground (nprn 536892), which may be the roofless remains of a sunken shelter used for food storage. Further sites were identified on higher ground, sheltered by natural boulders at the foot of cliffs (nprn 536814, 536815), which are likely to be post-medieval shepherd’s huts. There are also earlier long huts on the valley sides (nprn 537159, 537166, 537184).

Two dwellings were identified in the Gamallt valley. One of them is a small two-unit structure, measuring only 7 metres by 4 metres, which could be of medieval origin (nprn 536678). Attached to it is a raised enclosure, a feature that has been associated with medieval farmsteads, and has been identified in other upland surveys (Gresham 1954, 24-5; H&H 2013, 9).

Isolated long huts and platforms were also found on the slopes of Graig y Garreg Lwyd (nprn 537033) and at the foot of Y Garnedd (nprn 536697, 536762, 536795), in areas where there are no recognisably historic tracks. On the steep southern flank of Graig y Garreg Lwyd is a natural terrace, the site of a hut on a platform site that was probably the hafotty of Carreglwyd farm, which is just over 200 metres away at an altitude 60 metres lower (fig 10). Below Y Garnedd, one site incorporates a fireplace and could therefore be as late as the nineteenth century (nprn 536795) (fig 11). A much more rudimentary sub-rectangular structure (nprn 536803), only 2.5 metres by 3.5 metres in plan, was also found to contain a fireplace and was probably a simple shepherd’s hut (fig 12).

There is little evidence of encroachment on the common. Ty Nant-y-beddau (nprn 537076) is an altered nineteenth-century house, but it probably superseded an earlier house on the common, as an associated enclosure has an earth and stone bank (nprn 537095) which is clearly earlier than the nineteenth century.

3.6 Cattle and sheep farming

Most of the evidence for livestock management was related to sheep farming, as might be expected on the high unenclosed moorlands. At the lower altitudes in north-west Wales, relict fields are defined by earthen banks rather than stone walls. Eighteenth-century accounts suggest that these signify cattle grazing (Cradock 1770, 99). On the south side of Llyn Morwynion, is a system of field banks (nprn 537022), but because they are bounded by a more substantial relict bank (nprn 536952) on the north side a medieval origin is suggested (fig 13). Other relict enclosures have drystone walls, and are an indication that upland farmers here have specialised in sheep grazing for most of the post-medieval period.

Almost all of the 96 sheepfolds, and 46 smaller shelters, found across the survey area can be ascribed to the post-medieval period. They are dry-built of field stones, usually with boulder footings. In places they were clearly constructed for sheep washing as they are located by streams, occasionally with a dam across the watercourse (e.g. nprn 537151) (fig 14). Many are built in sheltered positions at the foot of outcrops, often utilising large boulders to reduce the amount of wall needed.

3.7 Peat cutting

Evidence of peat cutting was found in many parts of the survey area. Some of it appeared in the form of clearly defined cuttings, a series of which was found by Carreg y Fran (nprn 536550, 536551, 536572), close to Sarn Helen where the peat could be carted away easily. Most of the evidence of peat cutting is in the form of the 47 peat stacks that were recorded. They are generally found on the fringes of level, boggy ground, where there has obviously been cutting but where there is no direct visible evidence of it. Peat stacks are numerous on Y Cefn, just east of Llan Ffestiniog village. Little positive evidence of cutting was found near to former habitation sites of the medieval and post-medieval periods, but on the bank of Afon Gamallt, the kerb of a former peat stack (nprn 536681) was identified close to two former long huts (nprn 536678, 536680).

3.8 Recreational sites

Grouse shooting was evidently popular on the moorland in the nineteenth century, evidence for which is the 36 small shooting stands, which were found to be in various states of preservation (fig 15). Typically they formed by drystone walls up to 2 metres long, often in elevated positions where they can overlook valleys or a wide sweep of hillside. One boundary stone was identified, inscribed ‘TMC 1864’ (nprn 536643), although the initials do not correlate with any of the landowners listed in the 1842 Ffestiniog Tithe survey.

Fishing became popular in the latter half of the nineteenth century, when lakes such as Llynnau Gamallt, Llyn y Manod, Llyn Morwynion and Llyn Dubach were stocked with fish (Roberts 1995). A fish trap was built on the larger of Llynnau Gamallt, indicated on the 1891 Ordnance Survey, but no trace of it has survived. There are 13

boat houses on the smaller of the Llynnau Gamallt and Llyn y Manod (nprn 536587, 537430), and a former slipway on Llyn Morwynion (nprn 536979). Each has moorland tracks associated with them. The most numerous of fishing-related sites are rudimentary drystone shelters built on the lake shores by fishermen.

The common on Y Cefn became a golf club in 1893. This has little discernible effect on the archaeology of the landscape, which is rich in early quarries, although sheepfolds marked on the 1891 Ordnance Survey in this area have been taken down.

3.9 Non-ferrous mining

There is evidence of copper and lead mining within the survey area in the nineteenth century. Lead was mined close to the headwaters of Afon Gamallt, below the lakes (nprn 537494). Trials were made to test the vein but their extent is uncertain and no working mine is known to have developed. Further trials were undertaken c1920 by the Union Mining Company (Foster-Smith 1977, 11). At the site, there are 20 prospecting trenches, as well as blocked or partially blocked entrances to four adits driven into the foot of the valley slope (nprn 536600, 536603, 536609, 536612). Structures beside these workings may belong to this latter phase.

Another group of lead mines was found just downstream, on the bank of Afon Gamallt. The Gamallt lead mines (nprn 537495) were working in 1834 (Bick 2003, 133). This complex includes adits (nprn 536719, 536725), one of which has an arched stone portal, together with trials, mine buildings, and a track by which means ore was transported down the valley to join Sarn Helen (fig 16). One of the adits (nprn 536719) cuts through an earlier wheelpit, indicating that some ore processing occurred on the site. The relatively small scale of the spoil tips here indicates that there was little commercial production, however. The mines had been abandoned by the time of the 1891 Ordnance Survey map, which mis-labels the adits as trial shafts.

Lead mining was also undertaken on the south flank of Manod Bach and Manod Mawr. These are small mines, in which the adits have been blocked and which have small associated spoil tips (nprn 537200, 537206). Other nearby lead mines are located on lower ground, beyond the boundary of the present survey area.

Copper mining beside Afon Cynfal, in the vicinity of Rhaeadr-y-cwm is mentioned by Samuel Lewis in 1833 (Bick 2003, 134). Little evidence of this was found on the precipitous slopes beside the river, although one adit was identified (nprn 537014). A trial copper mine was found near Rhyd yr Helen (nprn 537187), but there is no evidence of any sustained production there.

3.10 Slate quarrying

Evidence of slate quarrying was found in many places within the survey area, and in many places is a prominent feature of the landscape. Most of the evidence comes from the nineteenth century, by far the most intensive period of activity. However, evidence was found of earlier quarrying, providing slate for local use rather than primarily for export. This was in the form of quarries on Y Cefn, at the southern end and on the lowest ground of the survey area, and the adjoining area around Ty Nant y Beddau (fig 17). These areas are close to and easily accessible from Llan Ffestiniog village. On Y Cefn 75 small slate quarries were identified, not counting those pits that could have been later gravel pits. The character of this landscape is quite different from slate quarrying in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The slate was worked entirely from the surface in small pits or quarries, and with little evidence of dressing on site. Spoil tips are therefore minimal and there are no associated buildings. It also indicates that the rock was used as a building stone and

where it was required for roofing, was used in the traditional form of thick slates rather than the thin roofing slates produced for the export market.

The technique of slate quarrying changed in the nineteenth century when slate became an important export material. In the Ffestiniog area, the veins dip at an angle and so the old method of working open quarries became unproductive in the era of large-scale exploitation. Instead, slate was worked from mines, although they were still conventionally referred to as quarries. At Ffestiniog, levels were driven underneath hard, commercially useless rock in the search for suitable veins of slate (Gwyn 2006, 43-6). In the field this means that trials for slate mining cannot always be identified by the nature of the spoil. Exploratory levels were found scattered across the survey area, only a small proportion of which were mapped by the Ordnance Survey in the nineteenth century. Therefore it is difficult to be certain that slate was the intended mineral, but in most cases it is highly likely.

There are significant slate quarries at Drum, Bryn Glas, Cwm Teigl and Foelgron, while others at Bwlch y Slates and Graig Ddu lie just outside of the survey area but have associated structures within the survey area. Drum Quarry (nprn 305779) was worked from the 1860s and at its peak in 1872 it produced 532 tons of slate and employed 30 men (Richards 2007, 215-16). The site, characterised by its large finger tips of waste slate, was worked largely from deep pits. Tunnels were the means by which slate was removed, and they have workshops for dressing and trimming beside them (fig 18). However, the tunnels appear to have been earlier mines that became exposed when pits were dug from above. There are other characteristic features of this quarry. Each of the tips incorporates a weigh house, and also small shelters, or gwaliau, usually low three-sided structures in which men split and trimmed the slates.

An inclined plane (nprn 537043) was used to convey slate from the quarry to an existing track, that had previously served Gamallt lead mines.

Foelgron Quarry (nprn 537492) was worked from c1850, employing 30 men in the 1870s, but output declined and the quarry closed in the 1890s, with a brief respite in the early 1900s (Richards 2007, 216). Slate was worked from levels, some evidence of which has survived, although the quarry was expanded on a large scale in the late twentieth century to exploit veins of dolerite. This has destroyed much of the original quarry and some of its associated features. For example, tramways marked on the nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey were obliterated by the construction of a hardcore track for heavy road vehicles (nprn 536685). The main mill associated with the quarry was built some distance away from it, and lay outside of the present survey area to the south east, although it was largely destroyed by landscape improvement in the twentieth century. At an earlier mill below the quarry, a small waterwheel pit (nprn 536686) and associated buildings, and a long leat (nprn 536691) have survived. These were disused by the time of the 1891 Ordnance Survey, by which time the new mill at a lower level had been built, almost certainly because it was easier to supply water at the lower level to power waterwheels.

The small slate quarry at Cwm Teigl (nprn 537493) had been abandoned by 1891. It also incorporates a small waterwheel pit (nprn 536821), but the associated saw table does not appear to have been housed in a roofed building (fig 19). The structure is set apart from the main quarry (nprn 536826) and was supplied with water from a reservoir on the top of the hill, fed by a steep narrow leat (nprn 536811, 536810).

Bryn Glas Quarry (nprn 305785) was a late nineteenth-century quarry that continued working until the 1920s, by which time steam power had been introduced. A number of structures survive, including the mill buildings (nprn 536943), and a small reservoir with leat that supplied the engine boiler (536917, 536918) (fig 20). Other features include quarry pits and levels, and structures associated with the transport of materials, including tramway and incline (nprn 536938) from an upper adit and quarry pit (nprn 536932, 536934) (figs 21, 22).

A small quarry at Nant y Pistyll Gwyn (nprn 419110) is now just a flooded pit. Its narrow, shallow waste run appears to have been intended as an embankment for a tramway leading to the road, but was not completed (nprn 536732). Near the pit are holding down bolts, probably associated with a crane, and footings of a small mill building or dressing shed (nprn 536735, 536736). Another small mine, Chwarel Llew Twrog in Cwm Teigl (nprn 536897), was active between the 1890s and 1914, but clearly employed only a handful of men (Richards 2007, 213). Its level is said to be 150 yards long. The site comprises only a level, spoil tip and a small gwal.

Graig Ddu, Old Manod and Bwlch y Slates quarries lay slightly outside of the survey area (where production continues as Manod Quarries and where some of the nineteenth-century evidence has been destroyed) but associated features were recorded. The quarries are all over 500 metres above sea level, which presented problems of transportation and of power supply for the associated mills. A track was used to transport slate from Old Manod down the flank of Manod Mawr (nprn 537197) in the early nineteenth century, and is well-preserved. After 1865, three inclines (nprn 34932) were built to carry slate westwards to Bethania and the new Ffestiniog & Blaenau Railway, a distance of 1.7 kilometres and a fall of approximately 350 metres (fig 23. The difficulty of storing water at high altitude was solved by an ambitious network of reservoirs. At Bwlch y Slates, water was provided by a pair of reservoirs on the northern flank of Manod Mawr (nprn 537242), at 600 metres above sea level. At Graig Ddu, the problem of water supply was solved in the 1880s by building a slate dressing mill at the foot of the upper incline (nprn 537337). In order to achieve this, however, water was supplied from a network of natural lakes and artificial reservoirs. Llyn y Manod was dammed, and water was pumped from it northward to a holding reservoir above the works (nprn 537367, 537222, 537349). Llyn Dubach, to the north, was also dammed in order to maintain its level (nprn 537469). Five other artificial reservoirs were built closer to the works, including Llyn Dwr-oer (nprn 537339), which is immediately above the works and was supplied by the other holding reservoirs (fig 24). A gas engine was installed in the early twentieth century, but the works still relied on water power, since a second, artificial reservoir was created in 1915 on the downstream side of Llyn Dubach (nprn 537471). The system of reservoirs is much better preserved than buildings at the works, which were largely taken down after closure in 1946. The best preserved feature is the concrete base of the gas engine (nprn 537343).

3.11 ‘Granite’ quarrying

Quarries on the west flank of Manod Bach were largely opened in the twentieth century. These are known as ‘granite’ quarries, but in fact they were quarried for dolerite, which was used in road building. Work began in the nineteenth century (nprn 537401) but the Manod or Madoc Granite Quarry (nprn 415615) saw a

massive expansion in the twentieth century and continued working until 1972. Further north is another smaller quarry at Clogwyn Du (nprn 537450), which is also largely of the twentieth century, but still using inclined planes to transport stone from the site.

3.12 Twentieth-century sites

Some of the twentieth-century industrial and recreational sites have been described above. Other modern sites include the adaptation of Llyn Morwynion to a reservoir (nprn 537078). Attempts have been made to improve the quality of the common as pasture by means of drainage systems, which appear to have had little lasting effect (e.g. nprn 536766, 536767, 536768). Apart from the fishermen’s shelters mentioned above, the growing popularity of walking for pleasure has resulted in the erection of rudimentary shelters and small cairns, notably on Manod Mawr, the highest peak in the survey area.

3.13 Summary and Statement of Significance

The Manod Bach – Y Garnedd uplands archaeological survey comprises approximately 14.5 square kilometres of mostly unenclosed common land to the east of Llan Ffestiniog and Blaenau Ffestiniog, and lies mainly within Snowdonia National Park. The landscape falls mostly within the 250 metre and 650 metre contours and comprises open heather moorland, with steep-sided valleys of grassland and mire. Much of the terrain is rock-strewn.

One Bronze Age site was discovered, a ring cairn on the summit of Y Garnedd. Significant Iron Age industry and settlement lies in the valley of the Gamallt river, close to the line of a Roman road between Tomen y mur and Canovium forts. At Bryn y Castell, iron smelting took place intermittently from 100BC to the third century AD. A large farmstead was found nearby, comprising hut circles and enclosures, either defined by walls or terraces cleared of field stone. Isolated Iron Age hut circles were also identified across the survey area.

Evidence of settlement in the medieval and post-medieval periods was also found, in the form of long huts, and is well represented in many of the sheltered valley locations. In practice the exact date of these former buildings is impossible to determine in the context of a field survey. However, although there were medieval farmsteads with associated enclosures found in the U-shaped valley between Manod Mawr and Manod Bach, most of the evidence of medieval and post-medieval settlement was in the form of isolated sites. Many of these were probably the hafotai of neighbouring farms, but they also include some smaller shepherd’s huts.

Before the nineteenth century land use was almost exclusively agricultural. Little evidence was found of cattle farming. This can be explained by the topography, much of which is ill-suited to cattle grazing due to its steep, rocky character, or its remote location. Evidence of post-medieval farming was therefore almost exclusively that of sheep farming, with copious examples of sheepfolds and sheep washes.

3.14 Use of Aerial Mapping

Mapping of archaeological features from aerial photographs was undertaken by RCAHM Wales at the start of the project. The results were incorporated on to digital maps which were used in the field for identification. In addition, the location of existing entries in the National Monuments Record and the regional Historic Environment Record were also marked on these maps.

Some site types were identified by this exercise, including sheepfolds and quarries. However, the number of sites identified by aerial mapping made up only a small proportion of the total number of sites found. Many sheepfolds are identified on nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey maps, but aerial mapping identified only some of those that are not. Sites which survive as little more than lines of stones in the ground were not consistently found by aerial mapping. This also accounted for the long huts and hut circles that had not hitherto been identified. Small features, like peat stands and shooting stands, which are numerous in the landscape, are not easily identifiable by aerial mapping.

4.0 Recommendations

There are numerous peat deposits, particularly in the north, east and central parts of the survey area, which may be suitable for environmental sampling. Analysis has already been undertaken in the area surrounding Bryn y Castell hillfort (Mighall & Chambers 1997), but there is another potentially profitable area of enquiry near Pont yr Afon Gam at approximately SH7450 4200, close to which are several dispersed hut circles.

There are two lead mine complexes that would benefit from a fuller measured survey. These are the Llynnau Gamallt lead mines of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (nprn 537494) and the Gamallt lead mines of the nineteenth century (nprn 537495).

Modern Ordnance Survey maps show some archaeological sites such as the hut circle settlements by Afon Gamallt. Other sites that should be appended to Ordnance Survey maps are given in table 4. nprn site to be mapped
