Olympic gold medallists Allan Wells and Eric Liddell were the inaugural inductees to the scottishathletics Hall of Fame. Wells, the 1980 Olympic 100 metres gold medallist, was there in person to accept the award, as was Patricia Russell, the daughter of Liddell, whose triumph in the 400 metres at the 1924 Olympic Games was an inspiration behind the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire. The legendary duo were nominated by a specially-appointed panel consisting of Andy Vince, Joan Watt and Bill Walker of scottishathletics, Mark Hollinshead, Managing Director of Sunday Mail and an on-line poll conducted via the scottishathletics website. The on-line poll resulted in the following votes: 31% voting for Allan Wells, 24% for Eric Liddell and 19% for Liz McColgan. Liz was inducted into the Hall of Fame the following year, along with the Olympic gold medallist Wyndham Halswelle.

Llanberis Lake Railway station (SH 58210 59879) The walk begins outside the Llanberis Lake Railway station and not at the popular Snowdonia Mountain Railway which is a little further along the A4086 towards the town centre. There is plenty of parking in and around the town near the Snowdon Mountain Railway and opposite Dolbadarn Castle. To begin the walk, follow the signs for Dolbadarn Castle and the National Slate Museum and opposite a car park turn right. Cross a large slate footbridge over the River Hwch and follow a winding track up through the woods to the castle. 2. Dolbadarn Castle (SH 58600 59792) The castle overlooking Llyn Peris was built by the Welsh prince Llewellyn the Great during the early 13th century, to protect and control the Llanberis Pass - a strategic location, protecting trade and military routes into north and south Wales.

Colin Lago Invitation to sponsorship St. Lukes Hospice has recently cared for a dear friend of mine and whilst out on the following adventure, I thought that I would seek (retrospective) sponsorship to raise money for this excellent centre of care. So, whilst appreciating that this approach is highly unconventional, i.e. that people seek sponsorship for challenges they are going to be taking, not ones they have taken! And that this is not, in any way, an organised event- again unusual!) Any contributions would be gratefully accepted. All money collected will go directly to St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield. Thank you. Introduction. This route was first suggested in an article by Tony Wimbush in ‘The Fellrunner’, (Feb. 2006) and was originally conceived as starting and finishing at Hayfield. The route represents ‘ a continuous circuit of over 40 miles linking the four county tops of Derbyshire, (Kinder Scout, 636m) South Yorkshire, (High Stones, 548 m) West Yorkshire, (Black Hill, 583 m) and Greater Manchester, (Black Chew Head, 542 m.)’ The only other criteria that Wimbush suggested was to cross the A57 Sheffield – Manchester road in two particular places, (on the outward and return journeys) :one over the Snake summit and the other crossing near the Snake Inn. My own account! Having been considering this route for a little while now- ever since two friends in the running club managed a winter traverse, I decided to have a go on May 9th, but for convenience and transport purposes chose to start and finish at Fairholmes car park on Lady Bower reservoir.

    NewsieBlack Combe Runners February 2008: the Christmas issue. New year, new races. New beer. It came as a shock when Will asked me for some words for the Newsie, as I was now Club Captain, but knowing I can’t wriggle out, here they are. Firstly, thanks to those at the AGM for your show of faith in me seeing that I’ve only been in the club a year, and thanks to Penny for her support as Captain. Both Hazel and I have been really pleased with the reception and friendliness of all in the club over the last year and it has made a huge difference to the enjoyment we’ve had running. We all run for fun, for some it is running and chatting on a Tuesday night, for others it is racing and drinking as much as is financially viable at the weekend. Our aim has to be to maintain this and help people to take part and stretch themselves when and where they want to. This photograph was taken by Dave Watson. That’s the only explanation I can offer. Ed. The winter league races, excellently organised by Val with her mallet, have attracted a lot of interest with 26 people We had 9 wanting to run last year so it’s a reasonable having competed in the first four races, most having hope. As a number of us found out in running it for the run two or more. The overall result is still wide open, first time in 2007, it’s a great team day out, with a little particularly as Val hasn’t told us how she will handicap us running thrown in and a few beers afterwards.
