  • The Lake District Mountain Trial Association
LDMT 2016 Course Planning Comments Sept 2016 The “Newfield” provided an excellent base for this years event, planning unfamiliar routes away and back to the pub was a challenge, the location of the map handout enabled the position of the 1st controls to provide good route choices, the run in was aptly described as an “adventure trail”. Early stages in the planning had the classic course returning via Hard Knott and Dunnerdale Forest/ Harter Fell but without making it too technical the route would have been rather dull, switching the route to return over Grey Friar then meant avoiding recently erected fences. Creating a loop to the north side Wrynose that gave good route choice without “dog legs” took quite a few attempts, Andy and I agreed that we didn’t want the north side of Blisco to be a favourable option but it was used, as was a route over Blisco’s summit! On the medium course I initially had control 5 in the vicinity of Hell Gill Pike, this would have given more weight to the option of a contouring route to the north of Wetherlam, limits on number of checkpoint officials and no obvious feature for a control resulted in the knoll to the south of Grey Friar being used and hence “dog legging” out of control 4 for some competitors. The short course is always problematic in that you are catering for novices and the elderly at the same time, the roughness of the terrain a particular problem for the elderly, the introduction of a “running assistant” takes away some of the worry but a separate course may have to come.

  • My 214 Story Name: Christopher Taylor Membership Number: 3812 First Fell Climbed
My 214 Story Name: Christopher Taylor Membership number: 3812 First fell climbed: Coniston Old Man, 6 April 2003 Last fell climbed: Great End, 14 October 2019 I was a bit of a late-comer to the Lakes. My first visit was with my family when I was 15. We rented a cottage in Grange for a week at Easter. Despite my parents’ ambitious attempts to cajole my sister Cath and me up Scafell Pike and Helvellyn, the weather turned us back each time. I remember reaching Sty Head and the wind being so strong my Mum was blown over. My sister, 18 at the time, eventually just sat down in the middle of marshy ground somewhere below the Langdale Pikes and refused to walk any further. I didn’t return then until I was 28. It was my Dad’s 60th and we took a cottage in Coniston in April 2003. The Old Man of Coniston became my first summit, and I also managed to get up Helvellyn via Striding Edge with Cath and my brother-in-law Dave. Clambering along the edge and up on to the still snow-capped summit was thrilling. A love of the Lakes, and in particular reaching and walking on high ground, was finally born. Visits to the Lakes became more regular after that, but often only for a week a year as work and other commitments limited opportunities. A number of favourites established themselves: the Langdale Pikes; Lingmoor Fell; Catbells and Wansfell among them. I gradually became more ambitious in the peaks I was willing to take on.

  • Draft Core Strategy
South Lakeland Local Development Framework Draft Core Strategy JULY 2009 Lawrence Conway, Corporate Director (Community), South Lakeland District Council www.southlakeland.gov.uk/ldf Alternative formats of this document are available by calling 01539 733333 ext.7102 FOREWORD South Lakeland’s superb natural setting shapes the district’s image and plays a major role in its development, making it a very attractive location for residents and visitors alike. However, while the district can offer a quality of life that is second to none, it does experience problems common to many rural areas. There is a need to deliver more balanced communities and reduce inequality, including reducing dependency on high-level services and jobs in towns outside the district, increasing provision of affordable housing and developing and maintaining high-quality modern sustainable transport networks. We must also meet challenging targets laid down by central government, most notably for house building. The challenge is to secure a sustainable level and pattern of development that creates balanced communities and meets local needs whilst protecting the environment that makes the district special. The Core Strategy document sets out the development strategy for South Lakeland outside the National Park areas up to 2025. It is a long-term plan. It draws together strategies of the council and other organisations whose activities have implications for the development and use of land. It puts the aspirations of the Sustainable Community Strategy into effect – seeking to create a sustainable district that is the best possible place to live, work and visit. We are inviting representations from everybody with an interest in the future of our district.

KMRT Rescues, 2002 2001 was the quietest year since 1986 - the result of the Foot and Mouth epidemic. With 1996, this has been our third busiest year. • I Love to Challenge Myself
Kim Collison: I love to challenge myself I am passionate about running and off-road in particular. Fell, trail, ultra - all of them. I guess my main passion is mountains. Being out in nature and exploring comes into it too. I am quite competitive. The race element comes right to the fore for me. I love to challenge myself. Kim Collison attempts to summarise his passion for being out in the mountains. I talked to him just after he had set a new winter Bob Graham Round record this December. He went on to explain his background and how he got into his sport, whilst also giving details of that impressive winter effort. Kim Collison is not a native of Cumbria, although he has lived there for a while now. He grew up in Tring, in Hertfordshire, and ended up at Tring Running Club. His father was interested in sports and in running in particular. Kim enjoyed running from a very early age. As a young kid he was always outside playing. At Secondary School, Hemel Hempstead School, he did a bit of cross country, but says he wasn't so good at team games. ‘One year I remember not getting in the school cross country team’, he recalls, ‘and then going on and winning all the PE lesson cross countries the next year. I was that driven and competitive. I didn't stand out at County level or anything mind.’ He was in the Scouts and did a lot of hiking in the mountains. Through this he was learning navigation, being taken to the Lakes and Snowdonia.
