Not only did he pursue I the best interests of the sport with unswerving dedication but he was one of those "larger-than-life" characters whose all too infrequent presence in our midst makes the world a brighter and more interesting place to be - an Appreciation of him appears in this issue of the magazine. It appears from the feedback that I have seen that the overwhelming view of most fell-runners towards the British Championship format would be "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The tried and tested format of four from six appears to be very much in favour and, judging by this year's Championship (results and report inside the magazine), which went all the way to the final race at Brecon Beacons before it was decided, it is a format which can produce very exciting competition indeed. It is to be hoped that PST accept that fact and retain the present structure - watch this space!! With this copy of the magazine you should have received quite a bit of information about the new subscriptions payable for your 2004 membership, together with the appropriate forms for payment. All rights reserved Click on this link to visit Lancashire’s geology and its contribution to known building stones, stone structures and building stone quarries (Opens in new window http://maps.bgs.ac.uk/buildingstone?County=Lancashire ) Lancashire Strategic Stone Study 1 Introduction The bedrock geology of Lancashire is dominated by fine to very coarse-grained SANDSTONES of Carboniferous and, to a lesser extent, Permo-Triassic age. There are, in addition, locally important outcrops of LIMESTONE. The Carboniferous rocks occupy a broad swathe of the east of the county, wrapping around a Triassic ‘core’ in the lowlands of the west, which is largely buried under thick accumulations of glacial till (Quaternary). The competence of the Carboniferous sandstones is reflected in the rugged moorland of east Lancashire, which in turn is reflected in the ‘sturdy’ character of the built landscape. The limestones present in northern Lancashire and around Clitheroe bring a lighter ‘openness’ to the villages of these areas. Lowland Lancashire, meanwhile, is primarily brick country, with the exception of some Triassic sandstone pockets around Ormskirk and Heysham. The widespread availability of durable building stone led to the development of quarrying throughout central and eastern Lancashire, with Rossendale (during the 1870s) exporting vast amounts of building stone to other areas of Britain and also abroad. Only a small number of quarries produce building stone today, with most of the industry now focussing on the supply of crushed stone products.

Mr Scriven's father laid the Foundation Stone for the Main School Building in 1964. ISSN 0010-0670 COVER DESIGN With a change in the format of the Colfeian, it was felt appropriate to change also the design of the cover.'The design chosen for this year at least, emphasises continuity. It is the design used on every issue from vol.1 no.l in December 1900 until vol.17 no. 67 in December 1939. In those days the Colfeian was the magazine of the Old Colfeians, while from 1902 the school had its own magazine, Colfensia. In 1951 the two magazines combined, thus beginning the present sequence of the Colfeian. The original cover, now being re-used, was designed by Charles J. Folkard whose signature it bears. More on this eminent Old Colfeian appears on another page. For his design, Folkard drew the heraldic stone which hung over the entrance to Colfe's Almshouses in Lewisham, depicting the arms of Abraham Colfe and the Leathersellers' Company. As a result of the school's celebration of Folkard this year, which accompanied the acquisition of some of his original drawings, the stone itself has been re-discovered. Since the demolition of the almshouses, it has lain, albeit somewhat damaged and begrimed in the vaults of Manor House, Lee.

These areas have similar characteristics and have strong community links. The work on the Zones of Influence draws on a wide range of surveys and related national, regional and local plans and strategies discussed in the Spatial Development Strategy Background Paper. The paper identifies key centres within each zone of influence and recognises the influences of key centres outside the Park to inform the Spatial Development Strategy. The paper identifies key transport routes, key employment areas, and further education and key services for each zone. The paper discusses the main issues for each zone individually, the implications for the Local Development Plan and how the issues are addressed in the Plan. 2 Background Paper 21: Zones of Influence – May 2017 1.1. BALA ZONE OF INFLUENCE 3 Background Paper 21: Zones of Influence – May 2017 What’s it like now? 1.2. This zone covers Penllyn rural hinterland covering the community councils of Llanuwchllyn, Llandderfel, Llangywer, Llanycil and Bala and has a population of 4,362 according to the 2011 Census. The landscape is rural in character with scattered farmsteads and small villages. The zone includes Llyn Tegid (the largest natural lake in Wales), Llyn Celyn, Arenig Fawr and parts of the Aran Fawddwy. The main service centre for the area is the market town of Bala. Penllyn has strong traditions based on the Welsh language and culture.
