[Type text] OpenAccess Access Newsletter Newsletter October 2015 Access Fund The first year report on the National Park’s Access Fund is now available at www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/accessfund. This is a ring-fenced fund for access improvements. The report is an annual one. The report shows the contributions received and what they have been spent on in this first year. Interim progress reports on projects which are still ongoing and for new work will be reported to the Local Access Forum. The report also includes quotes from those who have made donations. Their words and deeds best convey the importance of access and how we can care for this special place for the enjoyment and inspiration of all. Peak Paths Appeal The National Park Authority works with landowners to install and maintain access points and paths on access land and takes a leading role in negotiating and maintaining concessionary routes and increasing access rights to create links and improve the network. One of the paths which we help to look after is the one leading to Grindslow Knoll and the Edale skyline. This is a path on access land but an important one and is now quite eroded and has widened. We have already carried out some works to improve the drainage and would like to carry out further works to the surface of the path and the areas adjacent. This will make it easier to walk on and will encourage revegetation. The work will be carried out sensitively in a manner suitable for this location and its use. -

Mr Scriven's father laid the Foundation Stone for the Main School Building in 1964. ISSN 0010-0670 COVER DESIGN With a change in the format of the Colfeian, it was felt appropriate to change also the design of the cover.'The design chosen for this year at least, emphasises continuity. It is the design used on every issue from vol.1 no.l in December 1900 until vol.17 no. 67 in December 1939. In those days the Colfeian was the magazine of the Old Colfeians, while from 1902 the school had its own magazine, Colfensia. In 1951 the two magazines combined, thus beginning the present sequence of the Colfeian. The original cover, now being re-used, was designed by Charles J. Folkard whose signature it bears. More on this eminent Old Colfeian appears on another page. For his design, Folkard drew the heraldic stone which hung over the entrance to Colfe's Almshouses in Lewisham, depicting the arms of Abraham Colfe and the Leathersellers' Company. As a result of the school's celebration of Folkard this year, which accompanied the acquisition of some of his original drawings, the stone itself has been re-discovered. Since the demolition of the almshouses, it has lain, albeit somewhat damaged and begrimed in the vaults of Manor House, Lee. -

Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context. -

Although the 2010 World Cup received more online coverage and viewership than any major sporting event in history, the event - and the militaristic overtones of its media coverage - has received little academic attention, even at a time when many of the tournament‟s participants are engaged in violent conflicts both domestically and abroad. To determine the extent of the explicit use of military terminology in the newspaper coverage of the 2010 World Cup, in what context they were used, and how these contexts reinforce traditional notions of hegemonic masculinity and nationalism, this research employed a preliminary content analysis of print newspaper coverage of the 2010 World Cup from The New York Times, The Sunday Times of South Africa and The London Times of Great Britain. -

Each of the entries ends with a list of easily accessible sources to lead the student to further reading on the individual and a current address. Obituary entries also are included, written to prcvide a perspective on an individual's entire career. Beginning with this volume, the magazine includes brief entries of approximately two pages each.
