It is a new technology developed by Alstom combining ground-based static charging with on-board energy storage (supercapacitors). Small power supply units, fed by grids connected to sub-stations, are installed at each stop. It only takes between 10 and 30 seconds to charge the vehicle. © Egis - Cédrick CHATENET LUXEMBOURG LRT The Luxembourg tramway project, scheduled to commence revenue service in 2017, includes a 3.6 km section without overhead catenaries. The flash charging system used is based on a technology developed by CAF. The on-board energy reserve is made up of supercapacitors combined with a battery: it charges at stations through a third rail in the ground. The power supply equipment is installed in a trunking close to the platform. © Egis AVP © Egis - Odile GRIMBERT ANGERS LRT The Angers tramway project, planned to start up in 2022, will use Alstom’s new generation CATENARY FREE SOLUTIONS APS system. This choice was made specifically due to requirements in respect of vehicle compatibility, as some sections run on the same tracks as the first line which is already fitted with Alstom’s APS system. This solution will also be combined with a green permeable A great many cities have substantial historical and architectural heritage in their city centres. These track on several line sections. centres are generally the subject of restrictive regulations, with the presence of several protected (listed) © CC BY-SA 3.0 buildings. In the aim of maintaining the high aesthetic quality of these city centres and also complying with regulations, technological progress has today made it possible to dispense with Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), where previously an OLE was the only option for tramway operation. The tramway charges at a standstill (often at a tramway stop) and can run autonomously as far as the next charging point (the next station). Energy can be captured: • through overhead line sections (usually located in tram stop) • through the ground. CONTINUOUS GROUND-LEVEL POWER SUPPLY 3 MAIN TYPES OF SOLUTION EMBEDDED POWER RAIL A ground-level power rail embedded in the tramway platform MAGNETIC INDUCTION Electrical transmission by induction. Embedded into the infrastructure, a primary circuit creates a magnetic field, whilst a secondary circuit on board transforms this magnetic field into electricity to power the tramway. GROUND-LEVEL CONTACT LINE Small magnetised sections crowned with a series of steel plates are embedded into the platform, between the rails. The rolling stock charges through these sections using retractable collector shoes..
