  • Annual Report 2002-Project SB-2: Assessing and Utilizing
ANNUAL REPORT 2002 PROJECT SB-2 ASSESSING AND UTILIZING AGROBIODIVERSITY THROUGH BIOTECHNOLOGY CIAT October, 2002 Dedication This report is dedicated to the memories of our two fallen colleagues, Maria de Jesús (Chusa) Ginés and Verónica Mera, of late Coordinator and Social Scientist, respectively of the Cassava Biotechnology Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (CBN- LAC). The promising lives of these two highly respected and beloved scientists, wives and mothers were tragically cut short in the morning of Monday, 28 January 2002 when the aircraft they were aboard crashed into the Cumbal volcano in the Colombia – Ecuador border. They were on an official trip from their base in Quito, Ecuador, to the CIAT headquarters in Cali, Colombia. Chusa and Vero believed in and tirelessly championed the causes of the resource-poor farmers of the world. It is remarkable that they ultimately paid the supreme price while in active pursuit of the goal of ensuring that the voices of these farmers are heard in priority setting for cassava biotechnology research. By dedicating the SB-02 Annual Report for 2002 to the memories of these two wonderful people we are affirming our resolve to continue to positively impact on the lives of the poor farmers of the tropics by the strategic use of novel biotechnological tools to increase agricultural productivity through the exploitation of the rich agrobiodiversity of our mandate crops. ii CONTENTS PROJECT SB-2: ASSESSING AND UTILIZING AGROBIODIVERSITY THROUGH BIOTECHNOLOGY.................................................................................................. Collectively known as the satellitome, this genomic component offers exciting evolutionary insights into aspects of primate genome biology that raise new questions and challenge existing paradigms.

  • The Influence of Low Dutch on the English Vocabulary
The Influence of Low Dutch on the English Vocabulary E.C. Llewellyn bron E.C. Llewellyn, The Influence of Low Dutch on the English Vocabulary. Oxford University Press, Londen 1936 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/llew001infl01_01/colofon.htm © 2007 dbnl / erven E.C. Llewellyn iii Introduction THE words treated in this book have been collected from the pages of the Oxford English Dictionary and the Supplement to that work. I have not used the English Dialect Dictionary, as words in dialectal use only do not fall within the scope of my work. I have been as inclusive as possible. Borrowings from Low Dutch that found a place in the English vocabulary for a short time only, and then became obsolete, have been included; words which were never really naturalized, and those recorded but once, have not been excluded. I have found a place for the numerous Low Dutch words which have been borrowed into English in South Africa, North America, the East and West Indies, and Guiana. I have included a few Dutch words, such as ridder and marten, which have passed into English indirectly through French, and conversely many French words, e.g. such verbs as domineer, cashier, and fineer, which have passed into English through Low Dutch. A class of words similar to this last is that of words of Portuguese and Spanish or of native Malay and South African origin borrowed into Dutch, thence passing into English in their Dutch form. I have taken the explanations of the meanings of the words as given by the Oxford English Dictionary.

BARING-GOULD, M.A. AUTHOR OF "THE TRAGEDY OF THE CAESARS," " CURIODS MYTHS OF THE MIDDLE AGES," &-C. " I do beseech you (Chiefly that I may set it in my prayers) What is your name?" Tempest, Act III., Sc. i LONDON SEELEY y CO. LIMITED 38 Great Russell Street 1910 ; PREFACE Mr. M. a. Lower was the first in modern times to break ground in the domain of family nomenclature— in 1842, when he published his iirst edition of " English Surnames." There were in it many mistakes, and the work was tentative. A better book of his was " Patronymica Britannica," a dictionary of family names that appeared in i860. But the share of scientific research first entered the soil with Canon Isaac Taylor's " Words and Places," 1864. Since then there have been various works on the subject, some good, some bad, some instructive, others misleading there have been treatises on Irish and Scottish, and on particular county names. Mr. R. Ferguson, in his " English Surnames and their Place in the Teutonic Family," 1858, and " Surnames as a Science," 1883, and *' The Teutonic Name-System applied to Familv Names in France, England, and Germany," 1864, went too far in deriving most surnames from Teutonic roots, led thereto by Forstemann's " Alt- deutsches Namenbuch " (Nordhausen, 1856), a vast work that has been condensed by Heintze in *' Die Deutschen Familien- namen " (Halle, 1882).^ Mr.
