Southern Urals: Tourism in Harmony with Nature Anyone who has ever been in the Southern Urals and rafted along the Belaya River will certainly always remember the emerald mountains, the mirror-like stretches of river, the golden beaches. Tourism in these regions is well developed, and numerous campings are located near protected nature areas. In order for this proximity to bring benefit both to nature and to the people living near the nature parks, WWF has involved the local population in the deve- lopment of ecotourism. In 2004 with the WWF's support, several families from the Burzyansky District of Bashkiria under- went training and were certified as guides. Now they can independently accept tourists on the territory of zakazniks. After all, who's better qualified than indigenous residents to reveal the secrets of the local environment and

FOREST PROGRAMME Pskov Forest of WWF: Profits Can "Grow" In just a few years, WWF succeeded in creating a model of intensive and sustai- nable forestry management in the Pskov Region. This model combines the best of Russian experience with modern advancements in silviculture from Scandinavia. The Pskov Model Forest has strategic significance for Russia's entire forest sector, making forest use economically based and high-profit, and the forest sector attrac- tive for investment. In 2004, WWF completed preparations for the project's second phase, which began in December. Its goal is to disseminate the model fo- rest's experience over the large territory of Russia's Northwest in Arkhangelsk, Vologda, and Leningrad Regions.
