Third Sunday of : Rejoice!

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! This is how the Mass opens today in the Entrance Anphon. We note this day by lighng the pink candle in our Advent wreathes. The ancipaon of is almost palpable by the third week of Advent. Many of you are making mental lists of all you have to do to be ready by . Less than two weeks le of the Advent Season.

Our three readings today reflect both the rejoicing and the ancipaon, even maybe a bit of nervousness. Isaiah says, “Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindicaon; with divine recompense he comes to save you.” He describes in detail “Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasng joy; they will meet Dear Jesus, help us with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee.” Paul warns the faithful, “You too must be paent. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of focus on you during the Lord is at hand.” Good news indeed. this busy season. May Then we come to the Gospel of Mahew. Doesn’t start out like Good News. John is in prison. He we stay aware of the sends his followers to go see Jesus and ask him if he is the Messiah. Jesus has been travelling performing miracles le and right. The blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk. Demons are cast joy you bring into our out. So, he tells John’s followers go back and tell John what you have heard and seen with your lives. We want to find own eyes. Jesus’ recounng of the miracles harkens back to Isaiah, “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of you in the ever®day the mute will sing.” Jesus is telling John and everyone who witnesses him, that the day is at hand.

moments and come I think this Gospel might be more for us today than for the followers of John. Are we quesoning the second coming of Christ? Does the state of the world: poverty, famine, war, trafficking, the with hear¥s of opioid crisis to name a few problems we witness every day. Do these make us wonder where is g¢atit§de to your God in all this? Maybe the queson that should be asked is where are we in all this? Do we really love a God who insists on coming to forgive, to show mercy, to call even the unrighteous to manger on Christ™as. repentance?

Where do the blind, the lame, the sick, the poor have good news brought to them? And where do Amen we find ourselves to be instruments of God's creave power? Be not only hearers but doers, He says at the end of his sermon (MT 7:24). "Let anyone with ears listen," he teaches in his parables (MT 13:9). "Many have longed to see and hear what you have and did not," he reminds his disciples (MT 13:17).

How great a promise does God hold out for us this Advent season? Mahew's answer is a promise so great that even the least person in the kingdom of God is greater than John the Bapst. Let us be both hearers and doers, because we desire to be part of that Kingdom of God.

REASON TO REJOICE

Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparaon for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Lan for “rejoice”) Sunday, the color rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The enre liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing.

Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the St. Louise de Marillac’s Advent Penance Service will be on idyllic transformaon of all creaon as a result of God’s December 18th beginning at 7 PM presence in the midst of the people. Basic guidelines for airport safety

Flying for the holidays is stressful, and it’s even more so when you add children to the equaon. Airports are large, unfamiliar places flooded with crowds, and parents need to take extra precauons to make sure everyone arrives safely at their desnaon. Consider taking a family airport selfie so you have a current picture of what everyone is wearing in case you get separated. Talk to your children about “safe strangers” — TSA agents, flight aendants, trusted adults — they can ask for help. Go over the travel plans so that your children know where you’re going, what airline you’re flying, and where you should meet. For more informaon, please visit, hps://www.mamamia.com.au/travelling-with-kids-airport- safety/.

For more informaon on other ways to keep kids safe, contact Linda Filkins, the Parish Safeguard Commiee Chairperson at (626) 214-7846 or the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office at (213) 637-7227. For parcular help, call the Vicms Assistance Office at (213) 637-7650.
