DECEMBER 14, 2018 • HAWAII CATHOLIC HERALD CHRISTMAS 3 Star bright moments Here are scenes from the 2018 “Star Light, Star Bright” Christmas party at the Women’s Community Correctional Center in Kailua on Dec. 8. The annual event is for women inmates, their children and the kids’ caregivers. The Diocese of Honolulu’s Office of Prison Ministry spon- sors the event. This year’s party included lunch, treats from an ice cream truck, cookie decorating, craft projects, a puppet show, games, karaoke and a visit from Santa. All the children received gifts, and each female inmates’ family took home a laundry basket filled with food, gift certificates and other personal items. Donations cover the cost of the event, gifts and flying several outer island families to Oahu plus putting them up at St. Stephen Diocesan Center so they can visit their moms. Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu (pictured at top right) and diocesan employee Paulette Vernay, started “Star Light, Star Bright” 18 years ago when they saw that local inmates who were mothers didn’t get to see or reconnect with their children at Christmastime.

Editor’s note: A partial breakdown of the press that prints the Hawaii Catholic Herald resulted in limiting the number of pages for our Christmas issue to 24. We normally print 32 pag- es. As a result we were extremely limited in the number of news stories and columns we could run. Luckily we had enough room HCH photos | Anna Weaver to publish all the Christmas greetings we received. However, we were not able to print the commercial ads. Those customers will receive credit.

By Sister Malia Dominica Wong, OP Hawaii Catholic Herald

“Sister Dominica, could you please pick up the nuns on No- vember 26th?” asked the sweet voice on the other side of the line. It was Sister Agnella Iu, the last of the seven Carmelite nuns from Hong Kong who established Hawaii’s Carmelite monastery in 1973. She was speaking of three of the five new nuns who would be arriving from the Philippines to re-found Hawaii’s Carmel. “Yes, Sister,” I replied. The night before their arrival I could hardly sleep. “DL 612 from NGO, ETA 10:12 a.m.” was imprinted in my brain. Tiny and tall. Manufactured and handmade. Local and inter- nationally inspired. Close to 150 Nativity scenes fill the bookshelves of the St. Stephen Diocesan Center library this month, all of them a part of Bishop Larry Silva’s personal col- lection of manger scenes. This is the first year Hono- lulu’s bishop has put his crèches on public display. In the past, he decorated his personal residence at St. Stephen’s with the scenes, which limited both the number of people who could see them and the number of sets he could bring out. “I think they bring joy to peo- ple,” Bishop Silva said of sharing his crèche collection during this season of joy. The bishop didn’t set out to amass such a large grouping of Nativities. He says that close to 20 years ago he mentioned in passing to Msgr. Terence Wata- nabe of Maui that he loved the traditional scenes depicting the birth of Jesus. Msgr. Watanabe soon after gave him a crèche. Then more people started gifting them to him and soon he had a growing collection. The Nativity scenes come from around the world and are made of clay, wood, paper, leaves and plant fibers, porcelain, glass, metal, even alpaca wool. There’s a set depicting the Holy Family in a cave at Wadi Carith on Mt. Carmel that the local Carmelite Sisters painted. There’s a lighthearted manger scene with cloth musubi figures. There’s a puzzle piece Nativity and one with baby Jesus on what looks like an ambo, the “Word made flesh.” Out of all his sets, Bishop Silva has only purchased two himself. One is a palm-sized, blue velvet clamshell that opens to reveal a tiny silver manger scene with a shooting star overhead. The bish- op bought it on a Fatima pilgrim- age. The other is a non-tradition- al Nativity with the Magi, Holy Family, shepherds, star, animals and angels intricately carved HCH photos | Anna Weaver within a gold-painted cross.
