A Big Thank You to All Our Friends in Highlands Ridge Your generosity reminds us on a weekly basis what a wonderful community we live in. Our ministries are sup- ported by you in many ways. Our bicycle ministry has given away 242 bikes with over half of them coming from you. Non perishable food items, soap, clothing are often left in the wicker basket by our front door. Money has been given for the homeless and less fortunate which allows us to help families enjoy a Christmas they otherwise wouldn’t have. Your support of Samaritan’s Touch Care Center is amazing. The money, food, clothing and medical supplies you donate is helping us continue to give free medical, eye, hearing and dental care to the poor and less fortunate in Highlands County. We can’t thank you enough for your generosity and support. You are helping make a difference in a poor county. May God Bless all of you.

Understanding Rescue

I am often asked if I'm part of the Humane Society or the ASPCA, which I am not. I am part of an independent dog rescue. Sebring Angels was founded in 2013 by a group of ladies who saw the incredible numbers of dogs being euthanized at Highlands County Animal Control and knew they had to do something. They began "pulling" dogs, rescues word for saving a dog and working to find fosters or other regional rescues to take them. Within a few months they were making a measurable impact on the euthanasia rate. They officially organized in 2014 and received their official 501(c) 3, nonprofit designation from the IRS in March of that year. They began using social media to network dogs and the impact was amazing.

The flood of unwanted dogs continues in the southern region on the United States, due to a resistance of many people to spaying or neutering their dogs. But that flood had not dissuaded the dedicated volunteers of Sebring Angels and their affiliate Facebook presence Sebring Urgents, who market urgent, dogs daily. Working closely with 93 other small and large rescues the number of dogs euthanized has dropped from well over 3000 several years ago, to under 70 last year. With the Sheriff's Dept. taking over the running of Animal Services two years ago, the working relationship with this Dept. has improved enormously. They have improved the conditions of the facility and work hard to get dogs adopted. Because they are an open admission shelter, it means they cannot turn anyone away who wants to surrender their dog. When kennels are full, it’s a 24 hour job for many of us, to get these dogs networked and transported to a receiving rescue.

Often I am asked "how can I help?". My first answer is always, can you Foster? Even if it's short term, it can save a life. Since we are all volunteers with Sebring Angels, every dollar, we raise goes to caring for the dogs, so we truly rely on monetary donations. Although we receive rescue rates from the veterinarians we use, that is still our largest expense, along with food and prevention medications that we provide to foster for our dogs. Another way to help is to offer to transport dogs. It always amazes me how well behaved a dog is riding in the car on their "freedom ride". Our rescue has a saying "we can't save all the dogs, but we are doing our best to save as many as we can". We'd love to have you join us! NOVEMBER 2019 CLUB NEWS PAGE 7

Chorale News By: Karen O’Laughlin, Secretary

What a difference a month makes! Our little Paradise is becoming whole again. Lots of faces appearing that we haven’t see in a long time and we know many are still to come. And every once in a while we feel a hint of Florida fall……just a hint mind you, but it too will arrive with great relief to those who survived a very hot steamy summer!

Our Chorale is not quite whole yet, but it will be very soon. And we’d like to say hello to our new members! We welcome Barbara Johnson and Ann Booth to our family! So excited to have you!! There’s still time if anyone else would like to come and sing with us!

Speaking of singing! We are delighted with our upcoming Christmas program so I’m hoping you will be as well. We’ve been hard at work rehearsing in Founder’s Hall to be the best we can be for our December Christmas Concert. There is something for everyone. Old standards, new standards and some will make you smile. There is a wonderful Christmas version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” that we are so thrilled to be singing. It’s going to be so beautiful.

Did you realize the HR Chorale will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2020? We have several Charter Members that have been singing every year since! That is an incredible feat! So, they have seen lots of changes in the Chorale, and I don’t mean in hair color! I will try to gather information and pass it along for 2020. Should make for an interesting read! Don’t forget to save the dates of December 7 in Founder’s Hall at 7pm and the December 8 at Emmanuel UCC in Sebring at 4pm. Make sure you get to one of them! You won’t be sorry.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Chaplain’s Chat By: Rev. Bill Commons, Resident

T H A N K F U L F O R E V E R A Meditation for Thanksgiving Month As residents of lovely Highlands Ridge, surrounded by fun activities and caring friends, we have so much for which to thank God. Even when coping with illness, loneliness or grief, we enjoy a peaceful and beautiful environment and the support of neighbors and helpful HR staff. But what about forever? Is it enough to enjoy temporary blessings in this life only, when God offers so much more? Are you carefully preparing for the next life? We can be thankful forever! Do you realize the Bible promises YOU CAN BE SURE all your sins are forgiven and you now possess an eternal home in Heaven, if you trust in Christ alone for salvation! Not because we deserve it, for the Bible teaches we are all rebels, ignoring or resisting God’s love by nature, maybe “playing church” but not committed to Christ. We all need the forgiveness Jesus purchased for us by His death on the Cross, but we need to admit our need and personally receive his free gift of salvation by faith. If you turn to Jesus with all your heart, believing He died for you personally and rose from the grave to be your living Savior and Lord, you will be forever grateful for the eternal joy, peace and fellowship with God in Heaven that he gives as a free gift to all who make that faith commitment. It is not automatic, but a choice only you can make. CHOOSE TO BE THANKFUL, NOW AND FOREVER! Jesus said, “For God loved the (people of the) world so much that he gave His only Son, so that anyone who trusts in Him may never perish (die eternally) but have eternal life.” Then His apostle John explained, “Whoever trusts in the Son possesses eternal life (now!)” (from The Bible, John 3:16 & 36). What a promise! Will you believe? PAGE 8 CLUB NEWS THE GAZETTE PAGE 10

Book Club News By: Mary Harden, Resident

October’s book club meeting was great! Everyone really enjoyed the book and there was much discussion about the style, characters, setting, and story. We hope to see more of you at our next meeting on November 14th at 1:30 in the library when we will be talking about The Distance Between Us, by Reyna Grande. We are always delighted to welcome new members!!

Library News By: Mary Harden, Resident Among the recent donations to our library were two books of historical interest about Florida. Last Train to Paradise, by Les Standiford, is the gripping true account of the extraor- dinary construction and spectacular demise of the Key West Railroad. It celebrates a crowning achievement of human ingenuity colliding with the even greater forces of nature’s wrath. The First Hundred Years of Avon Park, Florida, by Leoma Braddshaw Maxwell, is a well illustrated history of our home town. A fabulous find for history buffs!! Another new addition is Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. In this, the author’s final novel, written when she was eighty years old, a strange rippling effects of a tragedy brings together five characters ranging in age from a teenager to a couple in their mid-sixties in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan, each of whom must confront very different challenges. It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that their lives will come together and be forever changed. Somehow the group proves to be greater than the sum of its parts and once again we are reminded that friendship, compassion, loyalty and love can renew us all, even when the days seem darkest. Born in Lelant on the north coast of Cornwall, Pilcher began writing at the age of seven and published her first story when she was 19. Today, Rosamunde Pilcher tours are run in Cornwall, taking busloads of tourists to the locations in her books. Her books also have a huge following in Germany, where she was hailed by the culture minister as the person who has managed to do more than any to mend the relationships between the German and British peoples. Our support group meets monthly in Highlands Ridge and is open to residents of Crystal Lake and Highlands Ridge who are living with a family member who has been diagnosed with Dementia and/or Alzheimer’s. This group will be a place to network and to share ongoing concerns with others as well as to connect caregivers with resources available in Highlands County. Caretakers often feel isolated and need a place to express feelings, share information and get emotional support. If you are interested in participating in the support group, please respond to Sue Purdy at [email protected] or by phone at 614-457-2855. We look forward to meeting you on November 26, at 2:00-3:30 pm in the Activities Room 1. NOVEMBER 2019 CLUB NEWS PAGE 9

Highlands Ridge HOA

By: Willie Faye Myers, Secretary

Greetings from the HRHOA Board of Directors.

Welcome to those just returning to Paradise, we have missed you. Welcome new residents Martin and Ann Cain (Hidden Creek), Clifford and Marie Westover (North Course), and Thomas and Kimberly Kuster (Oak Run). We’re so glad you’re here!

The third quarter of 2019 was busy for our Architectural Control Committee. They processed 18 requests, mostly for landscaping modifications, and in-home generator installations. If you read the September minutes and/or Gazette article, the Board has received notice from the State of Florida Commission on Human Relations of our responsibility to record and report the ages of all residents, occupants, and tenants. This is in order to qualify as a community of Housing for Older Persons (55+ Community). Our responsibility for reporting is for all Phases in Highlands Ridge (excluding Marina Cove). Note that our Covenants are more age restrictive than the HUD/FHA rules and regulations. If you have tenants (including seasonal rentals), they are also required to comply with all terms of our Covenants, including age. To maintain the same compliance relating to new purchases, a letter is being prepared by Lon W Crow, IV. It will be sent to realtors, title companies, etc. to prevent an ineligible transaction from occurring due to age of owner/occupant. The Covenants are age-specific to the Phase where your home is located. If you are contemplating selling or renting your home, please be aware of the verbiage that applies to you.

Thank you again to Paradise Pride, and those residents who contributed their expertise in electrical and irrigation skills, and to those who contributed financially to the Altvater entrance beautification project.

Our next meeting is Monday, November 11, 2019 at 4:00 pm in Founder’s Hall. We hope to see you there.

MGA News By: Phil Hunter, Secretary

The WELCOME BACK SCRAMBLE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED! IT WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, NOV. 5TH. Be sure to note the change. It will be an 8:00 am shotgun start at the North Course. Lunch is included with an informative MGA meeting after. You'll need to pay your $20 dues before you play in the Welcome Back or any time before that at the North Course Pro Shop. CHECKS ONLY MADE OUT TO "HRMGA" AND YOU'LL NEED TO

INDICATE WHICH TEES YOU'LL BE PLAYING IN MGA EVENTS when you sign up. Anyone who would like to know more about becoming an MGA member, can contact Sec., Phil Hunter at: [email protected]

We ask that you play the SAME TEES ALL SEASON, but if you need to make a change for some reason, please contact the board in advance. Your hdcp/strokes will be determined for MGA events by the tees you play so we all need to be on the same page.

Your MGA Board: (Ron Swan, Sam Cline, Jay Freeman, Curt Dillman, Gary Dobereiner, Phil Hunter) has met and will provide you with a calendar of events and has agreed to keep your dues at $20 again this year.

We'll be changing many of our events to TUESDAYS to avoid conflicts with outside groups and a MAJOR CHANGE will be determining flights and skins payouts based solely on handicaps rather than the tees you play. We'll explain more at our first meeting after the Welcome Back Scramble. Unfortunately, there will no longer be reduced greens fees offered for any MGA events. We'd like to encourage MGA members to consider buying a HR membership and to support Paradise Pride in both their efforts to continue improvements to our courses.

Happy golfing and welcome back to Highlands Ridge!
