Journal of American Studies of Turkey 25 (2007) : 99-101 Into the Wild (Sean Penn 2007) Mark Bousquet Hollywood has had a long love affair with the American landscape. Typically focused on the open expanses of the American West (evidenced most prominently in the westerns of John Ford, Clint Eastwood, and Kevin Costner), directors have seemingly operated on the principle that intrinsic to any story set against nature is to highlight the bigness and beauty of the land. Sean Penn’s approach (seen through the cinematography of Eric Gautier) to shooting the landscape in Into the Wild operates largely antithetically to the western. Instead of focusing on the largeness of the American wilderness, Penn’s approach owes a stylistic debt to Terence Malick (whom Penn worked with on The Thin Red Line 1998), crafting an intimate relationship with the natural world. Into the Wild is an excellent and effective adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s book by the same name, relating the true journey of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), who left American civilization behind to seek a romanticized relationship to the wilderness of his literary heroes Jack London and Henry David Thoreau. After graduating from Emory University, McCandless donates the bulk of his savings ($24,000) to Oxfam America and severs his ties with civilization, both official (destroying his identification and credit cards) and personal (deliberately misleading his family about his plans). The Enduring Legacy: the anonymous groups The apology that launched a million amends By Jay Stinnett, Los Angeles July 27th, 2008, marked the 100th anniversary of Frank Buchman’s Spiritual Awakening – one that directly linked him to the cofounders of AA. As a young man Buchman gave everything he had to establishing a shelter for homeless boys in the slums of Philadelphia. The shelters success surpassed his budget and the six-member board of directors insisted that he cut the amount of food being given to his charges. He quit instead of cutting back. Resentment consumed him. His family despaired that he might not come to his senses. His work was destroyed by what he saw as the short-sightedness of others. His health was well past the breaking point. “Everywhere I went, I took me with me,” he later said. During a trip to recuperate in Europe, he exhausted the funds his father gave him and existed on the kindness of his family and the generosity of acquaintances. Tired and dejected he went to an Evangelical Conference in Keswick, England, hoping to connect with F.B. Meyer, a famous minister he knew, for spiritual help. Meyer was not in attendance; another plan gone awry. July 27, 1908, thirty year-old Frank Buchman, a Pennsylvanian Lutheran Minister, walked into an afternoon service with 17 other people to hear Jessie Penn Lewis preach on the cross of Christ. Shelley Levene, who has a sick daughter, does everything in his Glengarry Glen Ross to get better leads from his boss, John Williamson, but to no avail. When his coworker Dave Moss comes up with a plan to steal the leads, things get complicated for the tough-talking Glengarry Glen Ross. Joseph M. Caracciolo Jr. Jerry Tokofsky Stanley R. William Barclay Bob Shaw. Five minutes into the picture and there's so much awesomeness on the screen that it's almost overwhelming. Second time through and just as enjoyable as the first. First-rate cast, first-rate dialogue. Feels like a modernized Glengarry Glen Ross of a Salesman, with matching commentary on working class life "we work too hard"on shifting power structures the young managing the oldand on the emotional economics of capitalism subjection vs satisfaction. I didn't remember the characters being so consistently foul-mouthed, and this time through was slightly distracted by the film's heavy reliance on vulgarity. Nonetheless, this is an absolutely captivating film recommended to anyone who loves great actors, great characters, or great dialogue. It's amazing how a film focused exclusively on people talking can be so engrossing. -

Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue with Molly Haskell, 1997 Bruce Jenkins: Let me say that these dialogues have for the better part of this decade focused on that part of cinema devoted to narrative or dramatic filmmaking, and we've had evenings with actors, directors, cinematographers, and I would say really especially with those performers that we identify with the cutting edge of narrative filmmaking. In describing tonight's guest, Molly Haskell spoke of a creative artist who not only did a sizeable number of important projects but more importantly, did the projects that she herself wanted to see made. The same I think can be said about Molly Haskell. She began in the 1960s working in New York for the French Film Office at that point where the French New Wave needed a promoter and a writer and a translator. She eventually wrote the landmark book From Reverence to Rape on women in cinema from 1973 and republished in 1987, and did sizable stints as the film reviewer for Vogue magazine, The Village Voice, New York magazine, New York Observer, and more recently, for On the Issues. Her most recent book, Holding My Own in No Man's Land, contains her last two decades' worth of writing. I'm please to say it's in the Walker bookstore, as well. Our other guest tonight needs no introduction here in the Twin Cities nor in Cloquet, Minnesota, nor would I say anyplace in the world that motion pictures are watched and cherished. She's an internationally recognized star, but she's really a unique star. -

A Conversation with Billy Bob Thornton by Frank Goodman Puremusic 1/2002 I had known that Billy Bob was slated to star in the new Travis Tritt video, “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde.” Brother JB is our publisher, and he and my brother-in-law Gary Falcon manage Travis, so I’d been privy to the video developments. Everybody was up about it, it was obviously not going to be your average Country video. It doesn’t take much to get me to pack a suitcase and go almost anywhere, my gypsy ways never changed. So when it occurred to JB that flying me out to L.A. might land us a Puremusic interview with Billy Bob Thornton about his new record, I was basically in the air. I didn’t mind waiting for JB to turn up at LAX a couple of hours after me, I was engrossed in Ann Patchett’s The Magician’s Assistant, and having a big time. We got out to the high desert location, outside Palmdale. There’s an old abandoned little motel out there called The Four Aces, it’s used exclusively for videos and movies today. The desert’s funny like that. Something goes out of business, they just leave it there and walk away, let the elements have at it. I took some pictures of this old Spanish-style mortuary, I liked the sign that said “Open.” I really enjoyed the record, Private Radio. I know, we don’t usually cotton to records by actors. Visions of William Shatner singing “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” or the shocking crooning of Jim Nabors comes to mind. -
