    Journal of American Studies of Turkey 25 (2007) : 99-101 Into the Wild (Sean Penn 2007) Mark Bousquet Hollywood has had a long love affair with the American landscape. Typically focused on the open expanses of the American West (evidenced most prominently in the westerns of John Ford, Clint Eastwood, and Kevin Costner), directors have seemingly operated on the principle that intrinsic to any story set against nature is to highlight the bigness and beauty of the land. Sean Penn’s approach (seen through the cinematography of Eric Gautier) to shooting the landscape in Into the Wild operates largely antithetically to the western. Instead of focusing on the largeness of the American wilderness, Penn’s approach owes a stylistic debt to Terence Malick (whom Penn worked with on The Thin Red Line 1998), crafting an intimate relationship with the natural world. Into the Wild is an excellent and effective adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s book by the same name, relating the true journey of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), who left American civilization behind to seek a romanticized relationship to the wilderness of his literary heroes Jack London and Henry David Thoreau. After graduating from Emory University, McCandless donates the bulk of his savings ($24,000) to Oxfam America and severs his ties with civilization, both official (destroying his identification and credit cards) and personal (deliberately misleading his family about his plans). Beard' ABSTRACT This article explores a developing technology-the creation of digi- tal replicas of individuals, both living and dead, as well as the creation of totally imaginary humans. The article examines the various laws, includ- ing copyright, sui generis, right of publicity and trademark, that may be employed to prevent the creation, duplication and exploitation of digital replicas of individuals as well as to prevent unauthorized alteration of ex- isting images of a person. With respect to totally imaginary digital hu- mans, the article addresses the issue of whether such virtual humans should be treated like real humans or simply as highly sophisticated forms of animated cartoon characters.     “Can We Get a Cleanup On Aisle 2?” Previous: The Antisocial Fantasies of Jude the Obscure by Matthew Risling “Can We Get a Cleanup On Aisle 2?”: How Film Critics Mopped Up the Transgressions of Jenny McCarthy’s Dirty Love Sara Swain Pivot is published through Open Journal Systems (OJS) at York University 2 Introduction Dirty Love (John Asher, 2005) is the consequence of Jenny McCarthy’s fearless foray into the risky territory of the gross-out comedy. The film endured a long and laborious gestation period under the threat of financial ruin. The project began as a sitcom pilot that McCarthy had initially penned for Fox Television. Fox passed, deeming the project “too edgy and too controversial for TV” “Can We Get a Cleanup On (qtd. in Kevin Aisle 2?”: Williamson). But McCarthy and her How Film Critics Mopped Up the production team could Transgressions of Jenny McCarthy’s not be dissuaded. They Dirty Love bought the rights back Sara Swain from Fox and McCarthy went to work transforming the script into a feature film (Kates). She insists that she never wanted to be a writer but because of the dearth of onscreen comedic roles for women, she was forced to take matters into her own hands (qtd. in Sobczynski). Dirty Love eventually debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in late January 2005, where it was warmly received. John Cooper, the Festival’s Programming Director, lauded the filmmakers in the program notes for so brazenly travelling “across a comic minefield where few dare to tread.” Soon after the film was picked up for distribution.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 16, 2014 7:00 PM PT The Television Academy tonight (Saturday, August 16, 2014) presented the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy® Awards for programs and individual achievements at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. This first ceremony of the 66th Emmy Awards honored guest performers on television dramas and comedy series, as well as the many talented artists and craftspeople behind the scenes to create television excellence. Produced for the 20th year by Spike Jones, Jr., this year’s Creative Arts Awards featured an array of notable presenters, among them Jane Lynch, Tony Hale, Amy Schumer, Allison Janney, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum, Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Morgan Freeman, Tony Goldwyn, Aisha Tyler, Joe Manganiello and Carrie Preston. Highlights included Jon Voight’s moving posthumous presentation of the Academy’s prestigious Governors Award to casting icon, Marion Dougherty. Voight was one of Dougherty’s discoveries. Epilogue itchcock and his works continue to experience life among generation Y Hand beyond, though it is admittedly disconcerting to walk into an undergraduate lecture hall and see few, if any, lights go on at the mention of his name. Disconcerting as it may be, all ill feelings are forgotten when I watch an auditorium of eighteen- to twenty-one-year-olds transported by the emotions, the humor, and the compulsions of his cinema. But certainly the college classroom is not the only guardian of Hitchcock ’ s fl ame. His fi lms still play at retrospectives, in fi lm festivals, in the rising number of fi lm studies classes in high schools, on Turner Classic Movies, and other networks devoted to the “ oldies. ” The wonderful Bates Motel has emerged as a TV serial prequel to Psycho , illustrating the formative years of Norman Bates; it will see a second season in the coming months. Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour are still in strong syndication. Both his fi lms and television shows do very well in collections and singly on Amazon and other e-commerce sites.
