Shelley Levene, who has a sick daughter, does everything in his Glengarry Glen Ross to get better leads from his boss, John Williamson, but to no avail. When his coworker Dave Moss comes up with a plan to steal the leads, things get complicated for the tough-talking Glengarry Glen Ross. Joseph M. Caracciolo Jr. Jerry Tokofsky Stanley R. William Barclay Bob Shaw. Five minutes into the picture and there's so much awesomeness on the screen that it's almost overwhelming. Second time through and just as enjoyable as the first. First-rate cast, first-rate dialogue. Feels like a modernized Glengarry Glen Ross of a Salesman, with matching commentary on working class life "we work too hard"on shifting power structures the young managing the oldand on the emotional economics of capitalism subjection vs satisfaction. I didn't remember the characters being so consistently foul-mouthed, and this time through was slightly distracted by the film's heavy reliance on vulgarity. Nonetheless, this is an absolutely captivating film recommended to anyone who loves great actors, great characters, or great dialogue. It's amazing how a film focused exclusively on people talking can be so engrossing. Multiple watches in Previous review. This makes the 14th entry in a month-long rotation of NYC movies with my lover to commemorate the city and our forfeited vacation due to Glengarry Glen Ross pandemic. One of my all-time favorites, both for the perfectly timed and executed twists, and for the impeccable cast. This is a pure ensemble piece, where watching each set of characters bounce off each other in turn has its own pleasures, and it has some of the all-time great performances. And it has David Mamet's crackerjack timing and hard-hitting punchy dialogue with comparatively little of his more idiosyncratic and annoying quirks of repetition and circular dialogue. There's a little of it here, but mostly played for humor. This is a showy actor piece, but the acting is still so terrific — especially from Jack Lemmon, whose character directly inspired a particularly desperate Simpsons bit player. I've rewatched this movie so many…. Though optioned in under the assumption that Irvin Kershner of Empire Strikes Back notoriety would direct, it wasn't until that financing could be secured for the film adaptation of David Mamet's theatrical sensation Glengarry Glen Ross. Why did it take a half-decade for a Pulitzer-winning play with Al Pacino's name attached to hit the big screen? Because of all the fucking swearing. Seriously, the studios wouldn't touch it. So producers Jerry Tokofsky and Stanley R. Zupnik went digging through their couch cushions for coins while Glengarry Glen Ross every independent source of financing they could imagine, eventually engaging journeyman James Foley to direct with a budget…. I really don't mind being labelled a David Glengarry Glen Ross fanboy, because that is exactly what I am. There is something about his dialogue and his characters and the stage play-esque nature to many of his films whether just written or directed as well that I just absolutely love. I think he is able to transfer that stage Glengarry Glen Ross to film better than anyone else that I can think of. I do know that it's a transfer that doesn't sit well with a lot of people, and I do acknowledge that Mamet's work is an acquired taste. His dialogue is sometimes unusual and may even seem awkward to some, yet it always seems to fit perfectly with his plots. You think you're a thief? So Glengarry Glen Ross You get befuddled by Glengarry Glen Ross middle-class morality? Get shut of it. Shut it out. You cheat on your wife? You did it, live with it. You fuck little girls, so be it. There's an absolute morality? And then what? If you think there is, go ahead, be that thing. Bad people go to hell? I don't think so. Glengarry Glen Ross you think that, act that way. A hell exists on earth? I won't live in it. That's me. This movie belongs to Glengarry Glen Ross Pacino and Jack Lemon. Both give absolutely monolithic performances where they just own the entire screen anytime Glengarry Glen Ross open their mouths. It gives the Glengarry Glen Ross just enough backstory each to make them compelling but not to take away from the main focus of the story. The number of words including swearwords was enormous. Their abusing each other was fierce. I felt like I was watching a play. The ending that made me feel sorrow for salesmen, or rather for all struggling working person was pretty good. Review by John Wernecke. Better than I was expecting! American theatro-realism about the grind of sales. Masterful performances all round, Glengarry Glen Ross which the entire film hinges. Iconic Glengarry Glen Ross oft quoted by Wolf of Wall Glengarry Glen Ross aficionados Glengarry Glen Ross other bros. Review by EZU. Oh, well, that was fun. It's an episode at a sales firm. Just that, pretty much. Yet some business lessons, one could say, are being taught in mundane iconicness. The Glengarry Glen Ross credits said that this was an adaptation of a play. And it does feel that way indeed. There's always something happening and that is at the center of every moment. This is what I meant by "in a good film there has to be happening something meaningful at every moment". I was looking for the message of the film as well as the story. Maybe that's why the sudden ending was unexpected. Also includes one of the most annoying characters i can remember, and Kevin Spacey. Review by AustinHall. The cast in this is Glengarry Glen Ross. This is a realistic portrayal of what it is to try making a life Glengarry Glen Ross high pressure sales with all its highs and lows; promises of fortunes and deliveries of dross. Red-leads and dead-leads are to blame for life's outcomes. Living with "Objection, Rebuttal, Close". Written by kgdm I went into "Glengarry Glen Ross" totally blind. I had no idea who David Mamet was really other than the fact that he was a writernever saw any of his plays, or realized that he'd been in business for a while through some backtracking, I found out that he was the writer behind the film version of "The Untouchables", one of the best films of the 80's. It amazes me how all the big names in this film and there are plenty, Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Al Pacino, Ed Harris, and Alec Baldwin were pulled Glengarry Glen Ross for this two-act movie play about a salesman's life. It's all very dialogue heavy throughout, only about three or four different locations the primary action all taking place in the office and yet I was never bored for a second. The dialogue is clever, vicious, and occasionally even a little funny particularly when Pacino is in action; intentional or not, he can be a VERY funny guy. The plotting doesn't show all it's cards straight away, as there are one or two suprises that ultimately catch the viewer off-guard. Now as to the cast, what to say that hasn't been said? Watching Lemmon's desperation, Harris' anger, Pacino's laid-back cool, Spacey's authoritarian chutzpah, and Baldwin's icy dissection of his employees is astounishing to behold. These guys make it unforgettable. Two decades from now on, when all the hooplas of the 90's "hits" dies down, people will rediscover what I already know: "Glengarry Glen Ross" is one for the ages.
