Nominated for a second Academy Award for The Revenant, and with the release of Malick’s new film Knight of Cups, Museum of the Moving Image will celebrate the artistry of Jack Fisk, master of the immersive 360-degree set, with a fifteen-film retrospective. The screening series See It Big! Jack Fisk runs March 11 through April 1, 2016, and includes all of Fisk’s films with the directors mentioned above: all of Malick’s features, Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and The Straight Story, De Palma’s Carrie and Phantom of the Paradise, and Anderson’s There Will Be Blood. The Museum will also show early B- movie fantasias Messiah of Evil and Darktown Strutters, Stanley Donen’s arch- affectionate retro musical Movie Movie, and Fisk’s directorial debut, Raggedy Man (starring Sissy Spacek, Fisk’s partner since they met on the set of Badlands in 1973). Die große Menge an Neu- veröffentlichungen in diesen beiden Regionen hat dazu geführt, dass wir in der vorliegenden Ausgabe auf die Japan-Releases verzichtet haben. Das holen wir aber selbstverständlich im nächsten Newsletter nach. Für uns Filmsammler fing das neue Jahr bereits mit einer grandiosen Neuigkeit an: die Welt wird blau! Der schon viel zu lange anhaltende Konkurrenzkampf zwischen den beiden High Definition Lagern ”Blu-ray Disc” und ”HD DVD” scheint beige- legt zu sein. Anstoß dazu gab Warner Home Video mit der Ankündigung, ab Mitte 2008 High Definition Versionen nur noch im ”Blu- ray”-Format anzubieten und auf ”HD DVD” zu verzichten. Das löste eine gewaltige Lawine in der DVD-Branche aus und führte zu strahlen- den Gesichtern bei den Fans. Denn damit dürfte die ”HD DVD” auf lange Sicht gesehen vom Markt verschwinden. Logisch dass Toshiba als ”HD DVD”-Verfechter nun alles erdenkliche tut, um sein System am Leben zu erhalten. Immerhin hat man zumindest mit Paramount derzeit noch einen der Großen mit im Boot.

Every May a good portion of the international cinema community spends the largest chunk of its dedicated travel expenses on flying inconveniently on at least two segments to Cannes, France, booking overpriced apartments or hotels, eating in "just ok" french cafes and pizzarias in between meetings and movies (did I mention $20 for french fries and $15 for a soda water and orange juice?), and staying up impossible hours that age even the most hearty, healthy entertainment veteran. The question is always is it worth it? This year, the threat and actualilty of George Bush's personal war with Iraq, the dismal economy and devalued U.S. dollar, and the fear of SARS decreased the numbers at Cannes by at least 40%. It was like a ghost town in comparrison with past years. To add insult to injury, the New York Times reported that this year's Cannes had the worst films on record, which was likely true considering the hottest ticket at the famed foreign language festival that has in the past prided itself on elevating intellect and snobbery of foreign language film, was the simultaneously worldwide opening night of THE MATRIX RELOADED, certainly a forgetable redundancy from the original.
