Cinema’s first out gay superhero is dusting off his tights for another battle against evil in the new trailer for Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel.

The film, a followup to 2004’s Surge of Power: Stuff of Heroes,, sees superhero Surge (screenwriter Vincent J. Roth) facing off against his nemesis Metal Master (John Venturini), who’s recently been released from prison. Metal Master must confront his estranged parents (The Exorcist’s Linda Blair and Buck Rogers’ Gil Gerard), even as he’s tempted back into continue a life of crime by the villainous Augur (Oscar nominee Eric Roberts).

Surge himself has bigger fish to fry, though: He’s being challenged by the nefarious Council, a “super-villain cabal bent on world domination.”

Revenge of the Sequel isn’t just silly helmets and thinly veiled innuendo, though: It’s clearly a labor of love and a response to the dearth of LGBT characters in blockbuster superhero movies. In addition to Blair, Gerard and Roberts, the film also includes appearances by Star Trek alums Nichelle Nichols and Robert Picardo, Lou Ferrigno and comedian Bruce Vilanch,

With two Surge movies under his utility belt, Roth has eyes on a third and final installment: “A colleague of mine has their own superhero characters which are introduced at the end of [Revenge of the Sequel], so we’re going to build a team after this,” he told Comic Coverage Weekly (https://comiccoverageweekly.com/2016/12/03/surge-of-power-revenge-of-the-sequel-interview/). “Then [we’ll] have a gay superhero in a team of non-gay superheroes see their interaction.”
