As Hebrew College nears its 100th year, it continues to create opportunities for innovation, ensuring that the College’s centennial anniversary will mark the beginning of another century of excellence in Jewish learning and leadership. In another transformative transaction in the College’s distinguished history, the Hebrew College Board of Trustees yesterday finalized an agreement to sell the College’s Newton Centre campus. The agreement allows Hebrew College to remain in its current location for several years under favorable terms. “Hebrew College is uniquely positioned as a leader in pluralistic Jewish education, and we are committed to meeting our learning community’s evolving needs with responsibility and creativity,” said Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld. “This transaction lays a strong foundation for future growth, and we are tremendously excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.” Andy Offit, Chair of the Hebrew College Board of Trustees, commented, “In addition to reducing operating costs, this transaction will allow Hebrew College to be debt-free for the first time since the move to this campus more than 17 years ago. This will afford us the ability to rededicate precious resources to expanding our educational programs and investing in the people who truly make Hebrew College what it is.” The College’s leaders determined that the sale of Hebrew College’s property in Newton Centre is a smart strategic decision that will allow for greater investment in critical areas that advance the College’s mission even further. -

PREPARING A DVAR TORAH GUIDELINES AND RESOURCES Preparing a dvar Torah 1 Preparing a dvar Torah 2 Preparing a dvar Torah 1 MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE ASKED TO GIVE a dvar Torah don't know where to begin. Below are some simple guidelines and instructions. It is difficult to provide a universal recipe because there are many different divrei Torah models depending on the individual, the context, the intended audience and the weekly portion that they are dealing with! However, regardless of content, and notwithstanding differences in format and length, all divrei Torah share some common features and require similar preparations. The process is really quite simple- although the actual implementation is not always so easy. The steps are as follows: Step One: Understand what a dvar Torah is Step Two: Choose an issue or topic (and how to find one) Step Three: Research commentators to explore possible solutions Step Four: Organize your thoughts into a coherent presentation 1Dvar Torah: literallly, 'a word of Torah.' Because dvar means 'a word of...' (in the construct form), please don't use the word dvar without its necessary connected direct object: Torah. Instead, you can use the word drash, which means a short, interpretive exposition. Preparing a dvar Torah 3 INTRO First clarify what kind of dvar Torah are you preparing. Here are three common types: 1. Some shuls / minyanim have a member present a dvar Torah in lieu of a sermon. This is usually frontal (ie. no congregational response is expected) and may be fifteen to twenty minutes long. 2. Other shuls / minyanim have a member present a dvar Torah as a jumping off point for a discussion. -

The Internet provides Jews who do not fit within their brick and mortar communities an outlet that gives them voice, power, and sometimes anonymity. They use these websites to balance their Jewish identities and other personal identities that may or may not fit within their local Jewish community. This research was conducted through analyzing a broad range of websites. The first chapter, the introduction, describes the Jewish American population as a whole as well as the history of the Internet. The second chapter, entitled “The Black Hats of the Internet,” discusses how the Orthodox community has used the Internet to create a modern approach to outreach. It focuses in particular on the extensive web materials created by Chabad and Aish Hatorah, which offer surprisingly modern twists on traditional texts. The third chapter is about Jewish online dating. It uses JDate and other secular websites to analyze how Jewish singles are using the Internet. This chapter also suggests that the use of the Internet may have an impact on reducing interfaith marriage. The fourth chapter examines marginalized communities, focusing on the following: Jewrotica; the Jewish LGBT community including those who are “OLGBT” (Orthodox LGBT); Punk Jews; and feminist Jews. -

INDIVIDUALS PRACTISING COMMUNITY: THE CENTRAL PLACE OF INTERACTION IN THE EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF LIMMUD JONATHAN BOYD, BA (HaNS), MA THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF EDUCATION APRIL2013 ABSTRACT In light of growing evidence of exogamy among Jews and diminishing levels of community engagement, the question of how to sustain and cultivate Jewish identity has become a major preoccupation in the Jewish world since the early 1990s. Among the numerous organisations, programmes and initiatives that have been established and studied in response, Limmud, a week-long annual festival of Jewish life and learning in the UK that attracts an estimated 2,500 people per annum and has been replicated throughout the world, remains decidedly under-researched. This study is designed to understand its educational philosophy. Based upon qualitative interviews with twenty Limmud leaders, and focus group sessions with Limmud participants, it seeks to explore the purposes of the event, its content, its social and educational processes, and contextual environment. It further explores the importance of relationships in Limmud's philosophy, and the place of social capital in its practice. The study demonstrates that Limmud's educational philosophy is heavily grounded in the interaction of competing tensions, or polarities, on multiple levels. Major categorical distinctions drawn in educational philosophy and practice, and Jewish and general sociology, are both maintained and allowed to interact. This interaction takes place in a "hospitable and charged" environment - one that is simultaneously safe, respectful and comfortable, whilst also edgy, powerful and challenging - that allows the individual freedom to explore and navigate the contours of Jewish community, and the Jewish community opportunity to envelope and nurture the experience of the individual. -

HEBREW COLLEGE 2020 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT Resilience and Imagination LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear friends, It was about a year ago that our world turned upside down. I have been awed over these last months by your dedication, compassion, resilience, and imagination in the face of this difficult and unsettling time. I have been awed by the creative collaborations that have continued to put learning and community at the center of our sacred mission—in ways that are both enduring, and ever-new. One of the great spiritual challenges of this time has been remembering, in the face of the pandemic-induced separation that has kept us physically apart, that we are not alone. That we are part of something larger. We know this, but we so easily forget. We get caught up in the things that divide us, the things that make us feel isolated —even when we are not in the midst of a pandemic. We are about to celebrate the beginning of the Hebrew month of Adar. The Gemara teaches (in Bavli Ta’anit 29)—Mi she’nichnas Adar, marbim b’simcha. From the beginning of Adar we increase joy. The Hasidic master, the Yismach Yisrael, asks: “How do we enter the gates of this joy?” His answer: “We do this by loving our friends, and by uniting with the Children of Israel.” For the Yismach Yisrael, we are most vulnerable when “our hearts are alienated from each other.” This is why, he teaches, at the beginning of the month of Adar, we recall the Torah’s obligation for each and every member of the community to bring a required donation of half a shekel. -
