English summary During the period 2017–2018 ArtDatabanken/the Swedish Species Information Centre was assigned to estimate the po tential risks from alien species concerning native biodiversity in Sweden. The assignment was performed on behalf of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The starting point was a list of approximately 5,000 macro scopic species from a wide range of relevant distribution areas. A first step was to screen all of these species using a simplified EICAT 2 protocol. The aim of the screening was to identify taxa potentially harmful to domestic biodiversity within a future perspective of 50 years. After the screening a selection of species (1,033) were analysed through the risk assessment method GEIAA1: This method is semiquantitative and estima tes ecological effects and invasion potential from a fixed set of criteria based on the species’ biology and distribution history. The method was used in combination with predictions of the future climate. This report presents the methods and results. 1 Generic Ecological Impact Assessment of Alien Species (Version 3.3). 2 Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa.

Comparative Phylogenomics Uncovers the Impact of Symbiotic Associations on Host Genome Evolution Pierre-Marc Delaux1*, Kranthi Varala2, Patrick P. Edger3,4, Gloria M. Coruzzi2, J. Chris Pires3, Jean-Michel Ane´ 1* 1 Department of Agronomy, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, United States of America, 2 Center for Genomics and Systems Biology, New York University, New York, New York, United States of America, 3 Bond Life Sciences Center, Division of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, United States of America, 4 Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, California, United States of America Abstract Mutualistic symbioses between eukaryotes and beneficial microorganisms of their microbiome play an essential role in nutrition, protection against disease, and development of the host. However, the impact of beneficial symbionts on the evolution of host genomes remains poorly characterized. Here we used the independent loss of the most widespread plant– microbe symbiosis, arbuscular mycorrhization (AM), as a model to address this question. Using a large phenotypic approach and phylogenetic analyses, we present evidence that loss of AM symbiosis correlates with the loss of many symbiotic genes in the Arabidopsis lineage (Brassicales). Then, by analyzing the genome and/or transcriptomes of nine other phylogenetically divergent non-host plants, we show that this correlation occurred in a convergent manner in four additional plant lineages, demonstrating the existence of an evolutionary pattern specific to symbiotic genes. Finally, we use a global comparative phylogenomic approach to track this evolutionary pattern among land plants. Based on this approach, we identify a set of 174 highly conserved genes and demonstrate enrichment in symbiosis-related genes.

Species of Septoria on the Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae, tribe Genisteae. - Sydowia 44: 13-31. Fourteen taxa of Septoria that have been described on members of the Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae, tribe Genisteae were studied. Seven taxa are accepted including the new taxa Septoria sulphurei, S. cytisi var. alpini, and S. cytisi var. petteriae. Conidial morphology, hosts and lesion morphology were found to be valuable in separating taxa. Illustrations and a key to the accepted taxa are included. Keywords: taxonomy, coelomycetes, pycnidial fungi, Deuteromycotina. The Fabaceae contains many economically important taxa, sev- eral of which have been reported to be infected with species of Septoria, including S. astragali Roberge in Desmaz. on Astragalus, S. glycines Hemi on Glycine, S. fulvescens Sacc. on Lathyrus, and S. pisi Westend, on Pisum. This paper covers the taxonomy of the Septoria species that have been reported on members of the Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae, tribe Genisteae, as part of a larger study of the approximately 160 species of Septoria reported on the Fabaceae. The tribe Genisteae was chosen primarily because the type of the genus, Septoria cytisi Desmaz., occurs on Cytisus, one of the genera in this tribe.

O. Box 236, Volcano, Hawaii 96785, USA ABSTRACT. Host specificity tests were conducted on (Jresiphita reversalis and to a lesser degree on U. pulygonalis. First instal's of U. reversalis were limited to feeding on quinolizidine-bearing tribes of fabaceous legumes. However, U polygonali.Y from the Ca nary Islands and u. reversalis both fail ed to complete development on Cytisus scoparius (Genisteae) beyond the second instar. Cytisus scoparius and Cytisus striatus were never observed as hosts of U. reversatis in California during the years of this study (1984- 1989). Host range of U. reversa/is encompassed six quinolizidine-bearing tribes of the Fabaceae: Genisteae, Snphoreae, Thermopsidae, Bossiaeeae, Podalyreae, and Euchresteae, although the latter two tribes have not been reported as hosts in the field. Both native and intro duced species in quinolizidine-bearing tribes will undoubtedly be used by U. reversalis when the opportunity arises. Additional key words: Pyralidae, Pyraustinae, aposernatism, host plant range, French broom, quinolizidine alkaloids. Uresiphita reversalis (Guenee) expande d its host range from native legumes to include several introduced ornamental broom species. Feed ing by U. reversalis on Genista monspessulana (L.) L. Johnson (commonly known as French broom or Genista) was first reported to the USDA Agri cultural Research Service, Albany, California, in 1983 when larvae caused substantial defoliation of some populations in the San Francisco Bay area.

  • Towards an Excursion Flora for Austria and All the Eastern Alps
42 (1): (2018) 5-33 Review article Towards an Excursion Flora for Austria and all the Eastern Alps Manfred A. Fischer✳ Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research, University of Vienna, Rennweg 14, 1030 Vienna, Austria ABSTRACT: This is on the one hand an announcement of the two-volume Fourth Edition of the Excursion Flora for Austria expanded by also including the remaining parts of the Eastern Alps (chapter 1), and on the other hand a rough survey of the flora of the Eastern Alps in connection with the main vegetation types (chapter 2). The geographical scope includes, besides Austria, the entire Eastern Alps from the Rhine valley in E Switzerland (Grisons) to the Vipava valley in SW Slovenia. Volume 1 mainly contains comprehensive introductory chapters like introductions to plant morphology, taxonomy, and nomenclature, as well as a sketch of ecomorphology and habitat ecology, a survey of vegetation types (phytosociology) and floristic peculiarities of the different natural regions, a rough history of floristic research, a detailed glossary including the meaning of epithets, etc., and drawings of several plant species characteristic of the flora covered. The structure of the keys concentrated in volume 2 is explained: besides the descriptive traits, they include for each taxon comprehensive ecological and plant geographical data, as well as information about Red Lists of the countries involved, plant uses, and taxonomical problems. Genus names are given not only in German, but also in the Romansh (Rumantsch Grischun), Italian, and Slovenian languages. In chapter 2, some important chorotypes including endemics are characterised, and an overview of floristic diversity (lists of exemplary taxa) in accordance with the main and most characteristic vegetation types is presented.
