PhD in Comparative Religion and Mysticism, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jul. 15, 2019 Revised: Oct. 28, 2019 Accepted: Dec. 17, 2019) Abstract1 When the Nation of Islam was first established in 1930 by Wallace Fard Muhammad, it managed to attract a segment of African Americans and persuade them to convert to Islam as taught by the organization. Despite the fact that the Nation of Islam has walked through a path of modifications and controversies, to this date it continues to attract African Americans in the United States. In fact, a significant number of well-known African Americans converted to Islam through the Nation of Islam. Drawing from Jowett’s neutral definitions of propaganda, this paper employs Jowett and O’Donnell’s 10-step propaganda analysis to examine how the Islamic Republic of Iran is presented in the rhetoric of the Nation of Islam. A study of the rhetoric of the Nation of Islam produced on the Islamic Republic of Iran as presented in the organization’s most important outlet, the Finalcall.com, shows that the NOI utilizes resonance, opinion leaders, and particular language in order to maximize the effect of its propaganda regarding Iran on its target audience and to reinforce ideological, emotional closeness with the Iranian nation.

I have chosen several methods of looking at these present realities and past experiences. Some of these are case studies and still others are from readings in history. Today as a community we are at a point where we can either succeed or fail to a much greater extent than in the past. We have schools, professionals, Islamic centers and well-read Muslims. What we lack is a core of brothers and sisters willing to try to organize Muslims into cohesive voting blocks and into strong neighborhoods and communities where the Muslims are visible and have a voice in the destiny of the greater society and to some degree in the foreign policy of America. Muslim is an Arabic word meaning one who submits to God. Muslims and their religion have greatly impacted the political, economic and military history of the Old World, especially the Middle East, where its roots lie.

  • A COMPARATIVE STUDY of the NATION of ISLAM and ISLAM Dwi
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE NATION OF ISLAM AND ISLAM Dwi Hesti Yuliani-Sato A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2007 Committee: Dr. Lillian Ashcraft-Eason, Advisor Dr. Awad Ibrahim ©2007 Dwi Hesti Yuliani-Sato All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Lillian Ashcraft-Eason, Advisor This study compares the Nation of Islam with the religion of Islam to understand the extent of its religious kinship to Islam. As with other religions, there are various understandings of Islam and no single agreement on what constitutes being a Muslim. With regard to that matter, the Nation of Islam’s (NOI) teachings and beliefs are regarded as unconventional if viewed from the conventions of Islam. Being unconventional in terms of doctrines and having a focus on racial struggle rather than on religious nurturing position the Nation of Islam more as a social movement than as a religious organization. Further, this raises a question, to some parties, of whether the NOI’s members are Muslims in the sense of mainstream Islam’s standard. It is the issue of conventional versus unconventional that is at the core of this study. The methodologies used are observation, interview, and literary research. Prior to writing the thesis, research on the Nation of Islam in Toledo was conducted. The researcher observed the Nation of Islam in Toledo and Savannah, Georgia, and interviewed some people from the Nation of Islam in Toledo and Detroit as well as a historian of religion from Bowling Green State University.

  • Minister Don Muhammad Temple No. 11 Q
MINISTER DON MUHAMMAD TEMPLE NO. 11 Q: How did you come to join the Nation of Islam? A: We were Baptists, and I remember my father said, “Make sure you listen very closely to the message, because even sometimes the message may not be clear to you, read the Bible and ask God to guide you.” And we believed in Christianity. And to a great degree, I still do today. Sometimes my friends say that I sound like a frustrated Baptist preacher. My blood brother invited me to attend Mosque Number 11 at 35 Intervale Street (in the Roxbury section of Boston). Minister Farrakhan was speaking. The first day that I went, I was not persuaded to join. He said that the following week he was going to talk about how God created the devil. And I came back that week, and I really wasn’t interested in joining that week either. It was when he said, “Next week my subject is ‘Who is God, what is He, and where is He?’” He talked that day for nearly 5 hours on the reality of God. And that message that day helped me to confirm that there is a God, that He is very interested in the affairs of human beings, and I was further a-able to see the intervention of God in establishing His kingdom. And that is why I decided to join the Nation of Islam. Q: What do you think attracted black people to the Nation of Islam? A: Mr. Muhammad was absolutely teaching black people how to be proud of themselves, how to respect themselves.

For Nation of Islam (NOI) members, personal prayer is required five times a day. The exact prayer times for each locality are available from a variety of sources. The contract minister or volunteer may have a schedule that states the beginning time of each prayer for the specific institution. Websites are also available that will print accurate times for prayers (for example, type Salat or Muslim Prayers in a search engine). Ritual washing is required, as well as a clean place where the prayer can be made. Nation of Islam members face Mecca on a clean surface (e.g., prayer rug, towel, mat, carpet, or any other material that is kept clean and used only for this purpose), and prostrate themselves before Allah as prescribed in religious law. Prayers can be made individually. In Bureau institutions, prayers can be made during breaks at work or in between classes at school. If an inmate is in the Special Housing Unit and a prayer rug is not permitted, an extra towel will suffice. Once the prayer has started, the inmate should be able to finish without interruption. During certain times of the year, the evening prayer comes in around the institution’s 4:00 p.m.

Vassar College Message from the Black Woman : Gendered Roles of Women in the Nation of Islam from 1995 to 2005 A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Bachelor of Arts in Sociology by Angel Needham-Giles Thesis Advisor : Professor Diane Harriford April 2014 Message to the Black Woman : Gendered Roles of Women in the Nation of Islam from 1995-2005 In this thesis I argue that despite the traditional gender roles assigned to women members of the Nation of Islam, these women are able to assert and employ their power both within and outside of the domestic sphere . Essential to understanding their roles is to identify these women and their narratives as told by them. Who are the women of the Nation of Islam? What do these women do? How are women members viewed by men in leadership roles? How are these women viewed by women who are not members of the Nation of Islam? How do these women view themselves?More specifically, what do these women see as their contribution to Nation-building historically and in the present? In closing, I attempt to examine and imagine the ways in which traditional notions of womanhood as outlined by the Nation of Islam can survive in the twenty-first century .

genealogy Article Black Religion and Black Power: The Nation of Islam’s Internationalism Bayyinah S. Jeffries Department of African American Studies, Ohio University, Athens, OH 45701, USA; jeff[email protected] Received: 1 April 2019; Accepted: 24 June 2019; Published: 29 June 2019 Abstract: The Nation of Islam’s influence has extended beyond the United States. This Black American Muslim movement has used the intersection of race and religion to construct a blueprint of liberation that has bonded people of African descent throughout the Diaspora. Their transnational dimensions and ideas of freedom, justice and equality have worked to challenge global white imperialism and white supremacy throughout the 20th century and beyond. Keywords: internationalism; Islam; Nation of Islam; Black Muslim “Islam will give you true brothers and sisters the world over”. (Muhammad 1965, p. 85) “We are not an organization; we are a world”. (Muhammad 1965, p. 322) “ ::: the darkest Arabs I have yet seen are right here in the Arab peninsular. Most of these people would be right at home in Harlem. And all of them refer warmly to our people in America as their ‘brothers of color’”. (X 1959, p. C1) Since the period of African enslavement and European colonialization, Black people’s experiences have overlapped in at least three key areas: (1) the exploitation of labor or economic deprivation; (2) religious interference; and (3) educational indoctrination. On the continent of Africa, people suffered torture, abuse, complete disruption and trauma from European intrusion. Outside of Africa, Black people have grappled with a system of racial oppression that criminalized, dehumanized and at times completely blocked any path to socioeconomic advancement, including miseducation, chronic unemployment, underemployment, mass incarceration and indiscriminate violence against black bodies.

"I Do Feel the Fire!": The rT ansformations of Prison-Based Black Male Converts to Islam in South Central, Malcolm X, and Oz Abstract Historically, imprisoned Black male converts to Islam have been known for their narratives of redemption and struggles for religious freedom behind bars. While Islam possesses a strong visible presence throughout predominately Black areas of inner cities, it has become a natural feature of Black popular culture in mediums such as hip-hop, film, and literature. By the 1990s, the portrayal of Islamic conversions yielding Malcolm X- style transformations among young Black men, who formerly embodied self-destructiveness, were visible in films featuring Black male protagonists. The prison-based transformations typically involved highly influential Black Muslim leaders improving the social conditions of the inmate, the development of a linkage between religion and racial identity, and the observance of gradual Islamic self-restraint.
