Ms. Johnson, a prominent leader of Britain’s first Black-led political party, was shot in the early hours of May 23, in South London. A 27-year-old Oxford graduate, Ms. Johnson, executive leader- ship member of the Taking the Initiative Party (TTIP), com- munity activist, and mother of three, sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound to her head. She’s currently in critical care at Kings College Hospital in nearby Camberwell after having undergone an operation and is in recovery. It is too ear- ly to know whether she has suf- fered any permanent damage. The community is demand- ing answers as to why the young, bright leader was shot. Five suspects between the ages of 17 and 28 are currently in custody on charges of attempted murder. Jonathan David Rowsell Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2018 Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Arnold Jacobs on the pedagogical approaches of prominent tuba teachers in Canada. Nine tuba teachers from different Canadian universities participated in this study. Each participant was interviewed digitally using Skype or FaceTime and asked nine questions designed to understand their personal pedagogical approach and how it relates to Arnold Jacobs. These questions cover important pedagogical ideas including sound concept, breathing, articulation, and embouchure. Arnold Jacobs is considered to be one of the most influential brass pedagogues in history. His method of teaching, referred to as Song and Wind, is a pedagogical concept frequently implemented in contemporary applied tuba teaching. The interview findings of this study demonstrate that the Arnold Jacobs legacy is very present in Canadian tuba pedagogy. The approaches to articulation and sound concept demonstrated by the interview subjects are consistently Jacobs inspired. The approaches to breathing and embouchure, however, are much more varied. Although these elements are not as tightly embedded in the Jacobs pedagogical ii approach, the results of the study demonstrate that the majority of the interview subjects are fully aware of the ways in which their current approaches have been adapted.

PhD in Comparative Religion and Mysticism, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jul. 15, 2019 Revised: Oct. 28, 2019 Accepted: Dec. 17, 2019) Abstract1 When the Nation of Islam was first established in 1930 by Wallace Fard Muhammad, it managed to attract a segment of African Americans and persuade them to convert to Islam as taught by the organization. Despite the fact that the Nation of Islam has walked through a path of modifications and controversies, to this date it continues to attract African Americans in the United States. In fact, a significant number of well-known African Americans converted to Islam through the Nation of Islam. Drawing from Jowett’s neutral definitions of propaganda, this paper employs Jowett and O’Donnell’s 10-step propaganda analysis to examine how the Islamic Republic of Iran is presented in the rhetoric of the Nation of Islam. A study of the rhetoric of the Nation of Islam produced on the Islamic Republic of Iran as presented in the organization’s most important outlet, the Finalcall.com, shows that the NOI utilizes resonance, opinion leaders, and particular language in order to maximize the effect of its propaganda regarding Iran on its target audience and to reinforce ideological, emotional closeness with the Iranian nation.

I have chosen several methods of looking at these present realities and past experiences. Some of these are case studies and still others are from readings in history. Today as a community we are at a point where we can either succeed or fail to a much greater extent than in the past. We have schools, professionals, Islamic centers and well-read Muslims. What we lack is a core of brothers and sisters willing to try to organize Muslims into cohesive voting blocks and into strong neighborhoods and communities where the Muslims are visible and have a voice in the destiny of the greater society and to some degree in the foreign policy of America. • A COMPARATIVE STUDY of the NATION of ISLAM and ISLAM Dwi
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE NATION OF ISLAM AND ISLAM Dwi Hesti Yuliani-Sato A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2007 Committee: Dr. Lillian Ashcraft-Eason, Advisor Dr. Awad Ibrahim ©2007 Dwi Hesti Yuliani-Sato All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Lillian Ashcraft-Eason, Advisor This study compares the Nation of Islam with the religion of Islam to understand the extent of its religious kinship to Islam. As with other religions, there are various understandings of Islam and no single agreement on what constitutes being a Muslim. With regard to that matter, the Nation of Islam’s (NOI) teachings and beliefs are regarded as unconventional if viewed from the conventions of Islam. Being unconventional in terms of doctrines and having a focus on racial struggle rather than on religious nurturing position the Nation of Islam more as a social movement than as a religious organization. Further, this raises a question, to some parties, of whether the NOI’s members are Muslims in the sense of mainstream Islam’s standard. It is the issue of conventional versus unconventional that is at the core of this study. The methodologies used are observation, interview, and literary research. Prior to writing the thesis, research on the Nation of Islam in Toledo was conducted. The researcher observed the Nation of Islam in Toledo and Savannah, Georgia, and interviewed some people from the Nation of Islam in Toledo and Detroit as well as a historian of religion from Bowling Green State University.

  • Minister Don Muhammad Temple No. 11 Q
MINISTER DON MUHAMMAD TEMPLE NO. 11 Q: How did you come to join the Nation of Islam? A: We were Baptists, and I remember my father said, “Make sure you listen very closely to the message, because even sometimes the message may not be clear to you, read the Bible and ask God to guide you.” And we believed in Christianity. And to a great degree, I still do today. Sometimes my friends say that I sound like a frustrated Baptist preacher. My blood brother invited me to attend Mosque Number 11 at 35 Intervale Street (in the Roxbury section of Boston). Minister Farrakhan was speaking. The first day that I went, I was not persuaded to join. He said that the following week he was going to talk about how God created the devil. And I came back that week, and I really wasn’t interested in joining that week either. It was when he said, “Next week my subject is ‘Who is God, what is He, and where is He?’” He talked that day for nearly 5 hours on the reality of God. And that message that day helped me to confirm that there is a God, that He is very interested in the affairs of human beings, and I was further a-able to see the intervention of God in establishing His kingdom. And that is why I decided to join the Nation of Islam. Q: What do you think attracted black people to the Nation of Islam? A: Mr. Muhammad was absolutely teaching black people how to be proud of themselves, how to respect themselves.

The contract minister or volunteer may have a schedule that states the beginning time of each prayer for the specific institution. Websites are also available that will print accurate times for prayers (for example, type Salat or Muslim Prayers in a search engine). Ritual washing is required, as well as a clean place where the prayer can be made. Nation of Islam members face Mecca on a clean surface (e.g., prayer rug, towel, mat, carpet, or any other material that is kept clean and used only for this purpose), and prostrate themselves before Allah as prescribed in religious law. Gazeta Wyborcza -pismo lewicowe i Gazeta Polska Codziennie- pismo prawicowo-konserwatywne.
