PhD in Comparative Religion and Mysticism, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jul. 15, 2019 Revised: Oct. 28, 2019 Accepted: Dec. 17, 2019) Abstract1 When the Nation of Islam was first established in 1930 by Wallace Fard Muhammad, it managed to attract a segment of African Americans and persuade them to convert to Islam as taught by the organization. Despite the fact that the Nation of Islam has walked through a path of modifications and controversies, to this date it continues to attract African Americans in the United States. In fact, a significant number of well-known African Americans converted to Islam through the Nation of Islam. Drawing from Jowett’s neutral definitions of propaganda, this paper employs Jowett and O’Donnell’s 10-step propaganda analysis to examine how the Islamic Republic of Iran is presented in the rhetoric of the Nation of Islam. A study of the rhetoric of the Nation of Islam produced on the Islamic Republic of Iran as presented in the organization’s most important outlet, the Finalcall.com, shows that the NOI utilizes resonance, opinion leaders, and particular language in order to maximize the effect of its propaganda regarding Iran on its target audience and to reinforce ideological, emotional closeness with the Iranian nation.

I have chosen several methods of looking at these present realities and past experiences. Some of these are case studies and still others are from readings in history. Today as a community we are at a point where we can either succeed or fail to a much greater extent than in the past. We have schools, professionals, Islamic centers and well-read Muslims. What we lack is a core of brothers and sisters willing to try to organize Muslims into cohesive voting blocks and into strong neighborhoods and communities where the Muslims are visible and have a voice in the destiny of the greater society and to some degree in the foreign policy of America. Muslim is an Arabic word meaning one who submits to God. Muslims and their religion have greatly impacted the political, economic and military history of the Old World, especially the Middle East, where its roots lie.

  • A COMPARATIVE STUDY of the NATION of ISLAM and ISLAM Dwi
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE NATION OF ISLAM AND ISLAM Dwi Hesti Yuliani-Sato A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2007 Committee: Dr. Lillian Ashcraft-Eason, Advisor Dr. Awad Ibrahim ©2007 Dwi Hesti Yuliani-Sato All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Lillian Ashcraft-Eason, Advisor This study compares the Nation of Islam with the religion of Islam to understand the extent of its religious kinship to Islam. As with other religions, there are various understandings of Islam and no single agreement on what constitutes being a Muslim. With regard to that matter, the Nation of Islam’s (NOI) teachings and beliefs are regarded as unconventional if viewed from the conventions of Islam. Being unconventional in terms of doctrines and having a focus on racial struggle rather than on religious nurturing position the Nation of Islam more as a social movement than as a religious organization. Further, this raises a question, to some parties, of whether the NOI’s members are Muslims in the sense of mainstream Islam’s standard. It is the issue of conventional versus unconventional that is at the core of this study. The methodologies used are observation, interview, and literary research. Prior to writing the thesis, research on the Nation of Islam in Toledo was conducted. The researcher observed the Nation of Islam in Toledo and Savannah, Georgia, and interviewed some people from the Nation of Islam in Toledo and Detroit as well as a historian of religion from Bowling Green State University.

  • Minister Don Muhammad Temple No. 11 Q
MINISTER DON MUHAMMAD TEMPLE NO. 11 Q: How did you come to join the Nation of Islam? A: We were Baptists, and I remember my father said, “Make sure you listen very closely to the message, because even sometimes the message may not be clear to you, read the Bible and ask God to guide you.” And we believed in Christianity. And to a great degree, I still do today. Sometimes my friends say that I sound like a frustrated Baptist preacher. My blood brother invited me to attend Mosque Number 11 at 35 Intervale Street (in the Roxbury section of Boston). Minister Farrakhan was speaking. The first day that I went, I was not persuaded to join. He said that the following week he was going to talk about how God created the devil. And I came back that week, and I really wasn’t interested in joining that week either. It was when he said, “Next week my subject is ‘Who is God, what is He, and where is He?’” He talked that day for nearly 5 hours on the reality of God. And that message that day helped me to confirm that there is a God, that He is very interested in the affairs of human beings, and I was further a-able to see the intervention of God in establishing His kingdom. And that is why I decided to join the Nation of Islam. Q: What do you think attracted black people to the Nation of Islam? A: Mr. Muhammad was absolutely teaching black people how to be proud of themselves, how to respect themselves.

Flanagan 2015 iii THE BRITISH WAR FILM, 1939-1980: CULTURE, HISTORY, AND GENRE Kevin M. Flanagan, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2015 This dissertation argues that discussions of war representation that privilege the nationalistic, heroic, and redemptively sacrificial strand of storytelling that dominate popular memory in Britain ignore a whole counter-history of movies that view war as an occasion to critique through devices like humor, irony, and existential alienation. Instead of selling audiences on what Graham Dawson has called “the pleasure culture of war” (a nationally self-serving mode of talking about and profiting from war memory), many texts about war are motivated by other intellectual and ideological factors. Each chapter includes historical context and periodizing arguments about different moments in British cultural history, explores genre trends, and ends with a comparative analysis of representative examples.

Cook County Parcel THE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE Kenneth J. Galvin OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS Administrative Law Judge RECOMMENDATION FOR DISPOSITION APPEARANCE: Mr. Richard D. Worsek, on behalf of the applicant; Mr. Shepard Smith, on behalf of The Department of Revenue of the State of Illinois. SYNOPSIS: This proceeding raises the issue of whether the subject property, identified by Cook County Parcel Index Number 20-33-100-001-0000 (hereinafter the “subject property”) qualifies for exemption from 1999 real estate taxes under 35 ILCS 200/15-40, which exempts, “[a]ll property used exclusively for religious purposes.” The controversy arises as follows: On May 11, 2000, Muhammad’s Holy Temple of Islam (hereinafter the “applicant”) filed a Real Estate Exemption Complaint for the subject property with the Board of Appeals/Board of Review of Cook County (hereinafter the “Board”). Dept. Ex. No. 3. The Board reviewed the applicant’s complaint and subsequently recommended to the Illinois Department of Revenue (hereinafter the “Department”) that an exemption for the property be denied. Dept. Ex. No. 2. On May 17, 2001, the Department accepted the Board’s recommendation finding that the subject property was not in exempt ownership or use during 1999. Dept. Ex. No. 1. On May 25, 2001, the applicant filed a timely request for a hearing as to the denial and presented evidence at a formal hearing on March 7, 2002, with Kamal Mohammad, National Secretary of the Nation of Islam, providing oral testimony.

Imperial Zions: Mormons, Polygamy, and the Politics of Domesticity in the Nineteenth Century By Amanda Lee Hendrix-Komoto A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Professor Susan M. Juster, Co-Chair Associate Professor Damon I. Salesa, Co-Chair Professor Terryl L. Givens Associate Professor Kali A.K. Israel Professor Mary C. Kelley ii To my grandmother Naomi, my mother Linda, my sisters Laura and Jessica, and my daughter Eleanor iii Acknowledgements This is a dissertation about family and the relationships that people form with each other in order to support themselves during difficult times. It seems right, then, to begin by acknowledging the kinship network that has made this dissertation possible. Susan Juster was an extraordinary advisor. She read multiple drafts of the dissertation, provided advice on how to balance motherhood and academia, and, through it all, demonstrated how to be an excellent role model to future scholars. I will always be grateful for her support and mentorship. Likewise, Damon Salesa has been a wonderful co-chair. His comments on a seminar paper led me to my dissertation topic. Because of him, I think more critically about race. In my first years of graduate school, Kali Israel guided me through the politics of being a working-class woman at an elite academic institution. Even though my work took me far afield from her scholarship, she constantly sent me small snippets of information. Through her grace and generosity, Mary Kelley served as a model of what it means to be a female scholar.
